We are Celtic, ambition

1392

On Thursday I wrote Brendan Rodgers ‘will be a remarkable signing’.  One day after the event, it feels very remarkable.  Some found it so remarkable they have attempted a smile for the first time since Artmedia took the lead.  I’ve even spoken to Newco fans who were engaged by the appointment.  The aphorism, a rising tide lifts all boats, feels apt.

Some weeks ago I heard Peter Lawwell talk about the difficulty of landing a top tier manager in our current environment, however, he finished with a positive “But we are Celtic”.  People want to come here; managers, players, even tourists.  For all the Scottish game’s limits, we are Celtic, let’s not forget.

We’ve used some of that cachet to bring people to the game.  There will be more cameras, more reporters, more international media, more TV viewers and many more glutes on seats next season.  This will reflect on all.

Our media rights are worth more today than they were a week ago.  Consider for a moment how Dafabet and Magners view yesterday’s news?  For all they knew when they signed their shirt deals, we could have had Owen Coyle in charge next season, unless his auntie told them otherwise [an old CQN in-joke].

I’m pleased to hear so many comments that this is a sign of ambition, although ambition is always more nuanced than it appears.  Ambition every year is to win the league and qualify for the Champions League, that’s always the plan, whether it happens, or if it’s only half achieved.  Hopefully the ambition is loaded with a little authority this summer.

Sannabhoy asked me to pass on these comments on behalf of the Kano Foundation to the CQN community:

“To round the season off the Kano Foundation had a visit from Almore to present us with a donation from the Dublin 1916 CQN gathering on Sunday for the sum of £580.

“As you know, this event, to commemorate the Easter rising of 1916, was organised by CQNers Almore and ClogherCelt, and featured 30 CQN members among the 70 scots who travelled over to join the 120 locals at the festivities.  A brilliant time was had by all (just to rub it in to the absentees).

“Brian Ainslie, trustee, is pictured here receiving the cheque from Almore and Delaney’s Dunky.
Kano cheque
“On behalf of The Kano Foundation it gives us great pride and pleasure to accept this fantastic donation.  We appreciate the numerous good causes that are out there and to be beneficiaries of this, and the historically significant events it commemorates, is humbling and makes the efforts of the patrons, ambassadors, volunteers and trustees worthwhile.

“To Martin Connor and Alan Curran, who organised it, we’d just like to say, on behalf of the almost 5000 kids we have taken to Celtic Park, thank you very much.  Without support like yours we couldn’t continue to do this. Hail Hail.

“On that note, I’m away for a kip until next season – I’ll need it – we can take 2000 kids next year . HELP!!”

What a stunning community you are.  Well done.

  1. Well done to the Ancient Order of The Hibernians…

I hear the Hun scum tried to cause havoc down the Gallowgate last night, they were swiftly moved on by the polis.

I guess it’s changed days since Muirfield was established. In those days if men wanted to ‘play together’ they had to devise elaborate schemes to do so.. Such as creating ‘clubs’.. Nobody cares nowadays.. If they want to spend their time with their chums they can do

So .. No need to continue with the elaborate scheme. Nobody is judging them anymore.

When the correct decision is taken at their emergency meeting in a few weeks or so it will be emancipating for many of these old repressed guys. Muirfield could transform in to a very liberal

Club.. Octogenarian male golfers playing in their gimp costumes finally unburdened ..playing golf to the soundtrack of Bob Marley’s ‘no women no cry’ and the weather girls ‘it’s raining men’ …bunch of weirdos!

  6. Sunny morning in darkest Lanarkshire, off to the gym soon and the current DIY duties are winding down now. If it stays dry, I may get a bit of gardening done but to be honest I may just watch the Killiev Falkirk game.

Going with a classic roast chicken dinner today, nice and simple with a glass or two of white Rioja .

Interesting read in the Scotsman from the Celtic minded Andrew Smith, wonder if the Orc PR machine will be trawling through the bins for as many anti Rodgers stories as they can find?

  7. Congratulations to Hibs yesterday. It has been a very pleasant weekend so far.

Hibs have done UEFA and continental Europe a big favour in denying Sevco and their hordes from rampaging across Europe

  8. the long wait is over on

Quick scoot through Rangers Newsnow this morning reveals a depressingly familiar narrative.

While no one can condone the Hibs fans going on the pitch , far less confronting or laying hands on the oppositions players and staff , the real flashpoints and potential for disaster came when the Rangers fan came on the pitch.

They were there for one reason only and it wasn’t to celebrate.

The utterly crass response from Rangers , issued minutes after the game, lacked any class of any kind and merely feeds into their fans’ already hugely overblown persecution complex,

It’s supposedly another day of “Shame ” for Scottish football.

Two genuine questions, the second a supplementary to the first.

Has there ever been any “Game of Shame” which didn’t involve Rangers?

Has there ever been any “Game of Shame” which didn’t involve Rangers losing?

I didn’t think Pat Nevin could go down any further in my estimation but on Sportscene last night he quite rightly condemned (in his usual pompous fashion) the Hibs fans for being on the pitch but utterly failed to mention that that were any Rangers fans on also.

He likes to portray himself, laughably , as being a bit more cerebral than the average pundit but, to be fair to him, he’s very quickly cottoned on to the basic requirement for keeping a job in the football punditry business in Scotland – get on your high horse at every opportunity to condemn the actions of any other team but when it comes to Rangers – See Nothing , Hear Nothing, Say Nothing.

Can’t help thinking that Rankers were looking for any excuse not to step up for losers medals nor applaud Hibs- they got that excuse. They must have grabbed the medals and ran because calm was restored reasonably quickly and all looked normal when Hibs stepped up for their medals.

As others have pointed out – has there ever been a ‘shame game’ which doesn’t involve them – usually losing, apart from Barca 72. In the litany of Rangers pitch intrusions so far folk seem to have missed the ’69 4-0 Cup Final. I’m sure there are Journalists in Scotland who can do 5 minutes research………oh wait a minute:-)

Warburton has won manager of the year for winning a league in which his team enjoyed vastly superior financial advantage over his opponents and a Diddie cup competed for only by lower league teams…

‘Really interesting piece in the Scotsman.’

    ###

Looks like a glorified press release written by PL.

Interesting though that The Great Desmondo apparently only now properly understands the nature of the beast having seen their directors’ antics at the semi final.

Kind of confirms what I’d always thought about him, that growing up in Cork and now being a corporate jet setter he would have had no actual life experience of what they were like. Hence his blathering about what a great club they were.

    Still better late than never.

And he’s not the first and won’t be the last to have his assumptions corrected by real life experience.

All he has to do now is confront and contradict the same club narrative and everything will once again be right at Paradise.

  20. One observation from yesterday’s game was the lack of stewarding/ police at the end of the game.

Every big game at Celtic Park has an unbroken line of stewards and police along the perimeter of the stands. There was nothing like that yesterday. It looked like one guy at every staircase and a few others dotted around.

Motherwell were hammered last year for the pitch invasion.

We’re the SFA culpable of similar yesterday? Pennypinching on health and safety.

Might explain the haste of the statements condemning the hibs fans.

Surely Alan Stubbs two cup finals and wins the major cup, Jim McIntyre has done well but Stubbsy manger of the year in my opinion, their league form nose dived after they knocked Hearts out of the cup but not one Hibs fan would swap promotion for that cup win yesterday, Hibs will romp that league next season after the high from yesterday

Does anyone know a Celtic supporter who shares Andrew Smith’s views?

Two weeks in succession he’s peddled his continuity drivel, presenting it as the orthodox view and dismissing any alternative view (and thise who hold it) as invalid.

  24. Congratulations Hibs, a great result and a hoodoo of their backs.

Hope they can kick on from here and become a force in Scottish Football again.

Particularly pleased for Alan Stubbs who has proven himself as a Manager.

Also really pleased for Stoksey, we all knew he had this game in him, but to do it on such an important stage is awesome!

    Hail Hail

  25. There were thousands of Hibs Fans on the pitch, but only a couple of dozen up to no good, however every one of the Huns who came on where looking for a fight.

Still haven’t seen any video evidence of any players being assaulted but if it did happen, I would totally condemn it and the perpetrators.

Hope the Blazer guy who aimed a kick at the Hibs Fan who was just jumping around celebrating is named & shamed.

Great great week-end. To be honest I couldn’t wait for this season to end, thought it was truly awful, then what happens, we win our last game seven nil playing sublime football, Brendan Rodgers appointed Manager & to top it all Stoksey well and truly skelps the Huns.

You know something ’twasn’t such a bad season after all.

The police and organisers failed it big style yesterday. Anyone with a knowledge of Scottish football could see a pitch invasion coming if Hibs won. What is the purpose of stewards standing at the gates onto the pitch when they stand back to let the fans through? (don’t blame them). One video I watched of the fans who, didn’t respond under extreme provocation ,had a tiny female steward standing petrified as the zombies around her screamed sectarian abuse and charged past her. The little stool she had was quickly taken off her to be used as a weapon.

  28. I read Andrew smiths latest propaganda piece in the Scotsman this morning.

    I found this bit revealing

In that he spoke of the Ibrox institution “as a fantastic club with a great history”, of being “disappointed” they did not share the same league set-up as Celtic, and of how he was sure it wouldn’t “be long” before they were doing so. An assessment perfectly in line with how clubs across the world that take the name and form of liquidated forbears are understood to assume the former’s lineage, it ran contrary to the Celtic supporter stance that Rangers post-2012 are a new club with no history beyond four years ago.

This article reveals much. Firstly that Celtic were always going to ramp up when the Huns returned. Laughably the article states that Celtic were building over the last few years and that had been achieved. Really?

The reference to former lineage and the general tone towards Celtic supporters is accusatory. If only we would just ,one on eh?

The article is really just making excuses for DD love in with the Huns and is an attempt to get us rallying behind him and buy season tickets.

It seems to me that the manipulation of the Celtic support is succeeding.
