We are Celtic, ambition

1392

On Thursday I wrote Brendan Rodgers ‘will be a remarkable signing’.  One day after the event, it feels very remarkable.  Some found it so remarkable they have attempted a smile for the first time since Artmedia took the lead.  I’ve even spoken to Newco fans who were engaged by the appointment.  The aphorism, a rising tide lifts all boats, feels apt.

Some weeks ago I heard Peter Lawwell talk about the difficulty of landing a top tier manager in our current environment, however, he finished with a positive “But we are Celtic”.  People want to come here; managers, players, even tourists.  For all the Scottish game’s limits, we are Celtic, let’s not forget.

We’ve used some of that cachet to bring people to the game.  There will be more cameras, more reporters, more international media, more TV viewers and many more glutes on seats next season.  This will reflect on all.

Our media rights are worth more today than they were a week ago.  Consider for a moment how Dafabet and Magners view yesterday’s news?  For all they knew when they signed their shirt deals, we could have had Owen Coyle in charge next season, unless his auntie told them otherwise [an old CQN in-joke].

I’m pleased to hear so many comments that this is a sign of ambition, although ambition is always more nuanced than it appears.  Ambition every year is to win the league and qualify for the Champions League, that’s always the plan, whether it happens, or if it’s only half achieved.  Hopefully the ambition is loaded with a little authority this summer.

Sannabhoy asked me to pass on these comments on behalf of the Kano Foundation to the CQN community:

“To round the season off the Kano Foundation had a visit from Almore to present us with a donation from the Dublin 1916 CQN gathering on Sunday for the sum of £580.

“As you know, this event, to commemorate the Easter rising of 1916, was organised by CQNers Almore and ClogherCelt, and featured 30 CQN members among the 70 scots who travelled over to join the 120 locals at the festivities.  A brilliant time was had by all (just to rub it in to the absentees).

“Brian Ainslie, trustee, is pictured here receiving the cheque from Almore and Delaney’s Dunky.
Kano cheque
“On behalf of The Kano Foundation it gives us great pride and pleasure to accept this fantastic donation.  We appreciate the numerous good causes that are out there and to be beneficiaries of this, and the historically significant events it commemorates, is humbling and makes the efforts of the patrons, ambassadors, volunteers and trustees worthwhile.

“To Martin Connor and Alan Curran, who organised it, we’d just like to say, on behalf of the almost 5000 kids we have taken to Celtic Park, thank you very much.  Without support like yours we couldn’t continue to do this. Hail Hail.

“On that note, I’m away for a kip until next season – I’ll need it – we can take 2000 kids next year . HELP!!”

What a stunning community you are.  Well done.

And in the interests of EUROPEAN Unity, I propose that Helmsdale, Sutherland be twinned with Free Derry.

“Former Rangers manager McCall has revealed that a couple of the players in the current Gers’ squad were disappointed with Rodgers’s move to Old Firm rivals Celtic.

“I have just been up at the Rangers hotel picking up a couple of tickets for tomorrow (Scottish Cup final between Rangers and Hibernian at Hampden Park in Glasgow), spoke to a couple of players,” McCall said on BBC 5 live Sport on Friday evening (May 20). “I think they are pretty disappointed that Celtic have got Rodgers, I have got to say.”

  8. Watching that cup final yesterday, and several times since:-), it strikes me that a very good signing for TRFC, and someone who would be guaranteed his place, is Efe.

    Says it all!

  9. Morning all.

What an absolutely wonderful weekend this is turning out to be!

    Marvellous!

One of the stories doing the rounds yesterday was that Kenny Misser had been battered senseless and was out cold.

Well he must have made a remarkable recovery, because it later transpired that he went into the Hibs dressing room to congratulate the players.

    More level 5 lies!

Any medical update on the Sevco players and officials?

  12. Lee Wallace says he was punched and spat at, and is considering retiring. Now that’s funny but hear this:

He says he went to the referee to complain when he got back inside and the ref called him ” a grass”

‘ my wife is considering calling the police”

    :-))))))))

  13. Kevjungle,

Brendan Rogers is from the 6 counties and he knows how to deal with those full of twisted ugly hatred—-no worries, he will be ruthless just like Stein and O’Neill. Every Celtic player will give 10 % more for BR to impress.

It’s a great appointment by Dermot and with the support being given a leader at last the transformation will be awesome. There will be some bumps along the way , however the direction of travel will be an upwards trajectory. Only risk is Lawwell interfering —Brendan will need to deal direct with the Kaiser for support at critical decisions.

In all the hullabaloo about fans on the park. When is Scotland going to deal with thousands of Rangers fans singing anti Irish and anti Catholic songs — which has been going on for decades. They were playing a Scottish team from Edinburgh yet their bile is ignored once again by Police Scotland and Scotland’s leading SNP politicians.

As for rangers lies about Rangers players attacked. Kenny Millers wife Laura Miller was tweeting repeatedly that nothing happened to Kenny and told fans to stop lying. Why does The RFC not face up to facts and stop acting the victims. They are a sectarian blight on a nation which does not have the courage to deal with their hatred. It is not helped when the entire Scottish Football media led by Matt Lindsay, Robert Grieve , Jim Traynor and whacko Jacko are hurting so much they are too busy defending their clubs antics.

Well done to Hibs and their fans for the colourful splash and entertaining football yesterday. Sunshine on Leith exemplified the proper non bigoted support for the Edinburgh club. Unfortunately the lesson on how to support your team is lost on those consumed with hatred and bigotry.

Well done the Hibees and their wonderful supporters.

Depressing climate in Scotland where attacking Rangers in any form is deemed acceptable. Hibs idiots emboldened by that dehumanisation.

Lee Wallace – fake statement saying he has black eye and gash on his side

Video purporting to show their goalie being set upon by Hibs fans – despite it showing an assault at the other end of the pitch.

This kind of stuff is inflaming the Bears, feeding their sense of victimisation and outrage. If this stuff is coordinated by anyone that’s a complete disgrace and I’d hope PS would be chapping on some doors pretty soon…

  20. Good morning friends. Can’t offer any opinion on how things are in Leith but plenty of sunshine in ole EK this morning.

  21. Growing up in the Burgh I went to Secondary school at Our Lady’s High in Broxburn.

The overwhelming majority of pupils supported Celtic, a decent amount Hibbees , a few jambos and 1 RFC ( il)

In the main the Hibs supporters were decent lads , some became friends to this day.

Anyway, cast your minds back to 1990.

A few years out of school, 2 years after our centenary and our prospects limited in the wake of big spending Rangers.

    Wallace Mercer wanted to challenge.

He thought he could swallow up his Edinburgh rivals and put a team on the park capable of challenging for honours.

The Hands of Hibs campaign was born.

I went with 2 school pals , Paul and Derek ( both Hibbees) to the Hands of Hibs day at Easter Road. Obviously , I wore the hoops.

Can’t remember much about the day, bit of a drunken haze. I do remember being thanked by Hibs supporters as we dragged our way round the boozers of darkest Leith.

I thought about that day a couple of years later when Paul was buried , a victim of cancer in his early 20s.

I thought about that day yesterday and I am so happy for the many good Hibs supporters I know, some departed.

I know for sure that like that day some 26 years ago , yesterday , the sun very much shone on Leith!!!

Scotland’s shame once again, so predictable. Win, lose or draw, it’s all they know. Seriously, if there’s worse fans in Europe can someone tell me who, and back it up with the track record?

As someone nicely put it last night, that was Hibs’ Lisbon. Good luck to them. I took part in ripping up the Wembley goalposts in 77, but that was over exuberant, good natured celebrations etc according to the msm. Watch Snyde and the DR go to town on this, blaming everyone but the common denominator that is the Huns, Scotland’s Shame. Not one spineless hack will will have the guts to dig up the back catalogue of mayhem,so I’ll do it for them…… Wolverhampton 64, Hampden 65, Newcastle 69, Barcelona 72, Manchester 74, Birmingham 76, Hampden 80, Chesterfield 80, Manchester 08 and not forgetting Pamplona, Villareal, Tranmere and Bucharest.

No, it’ll be another shame game enquiry, aimed at Hibs fans. Speaking of whom, had a brilliant party in the Brazen last night. As someone else rightly said, it was actually better than us winning the cup.

    What a weekend.

Been a great weekend so far. Rodgers on Friday night was fantastic news. I honestly didn’t think we’d get anyone of his calibre and the fact that we didn’t need to persuade him to come he was desperate for the job makes it all the more pleasurable.

Yesterday? Well I cannot recall enjoying a team, other than ourselves, winning a cup final so much. Suppose it wasn’t the team that won more the team that lost. The Newcoers I know were their usual arrogant self after the semi. Any kind of rational discussions with them was met with the “We’re back”,”We’ll win the league next season”,” You lot wont get a descent manager and wont spend money” and ” We’ll easily win the final,it’s Hibs.” It wasn’t just Leith that enjoyed sunshine yesterday my house was beaming .

  26. the long wait is over on

Really interesting piece in the Scotsman.

Looks like Thems lack of class at all levels might just come back and bite them.

Having read the piece I looked back at footage of them celebrating beating us ( which , for obvious reasons, I hadn’t watched before) – there was no footage of how their directors had reacted but the team’s reaction was OTT.

Reminded me of something I read years ago which has always stayed with me – if you want to know which team is more likely to win a final watch how they celebrate after the semi final. The team that celebrates the least is more likely to win the final, reflecting , generally, that they consider getting there isn’t the big achievement.

The way they celebrated after beating us now just looks embarrassing.

  29. “Today Matthew, I am a Hibees fan.”

Well the zombie club certainly has the same DNA as its dead predecessor but that doesn’t make it the same club but it still has the same horrible followers. As many on here have pointed out it was almost worth losing the semi final to them to reap the rewards we are seeing this weekend. I am delighted for Hibs but I don’t think they would have beaten us in the final, it was a game between 2 championship sides. Plus Anto and Liam would not have played against us. Lose-lose situation for the huns they lose the final and 2 Celtic players and a few other Fenians pick up winners medals, lolocaust :)))

Hopefully King’s rhetoric regarding “meaningless” titles will spur on our Club to pursue Resolution 12. It would appear that Glibby may have pissed-off 2 billionaires. Not a clever thing to do.

Also for the fans who arrogantly coined the term “Hibsed it” to lose 3-2 after being 2-1 with ten minutes left on a roasting energy sapping day. Oh! the irony.
