‘We deserve better’ narcissistic nonsense

305

‘We deserve better’ is one of those phrases which sounds reasonable at first pass but does not stand up to scrutiny.

Fans deserve honesty, good governance and a safe environment to watch football, but do you think any team’s fans deserve on-field success?  No.  And if there is one club out there where this mantra holds true, they don’t train at Murray Park.

Football success is not a right, conferred by the aggregate number of season tickets bought, divisions played in, or successful campaigns to unseat investors completed.  You buy a ticket to be entertained and watch your football team.  This act does not come with an implicit understanding of what the outcome of any individual match will be, or an entire season’s undertakings.

It is narcissistic nonsense to think you deserve football success.

‘We deserve to watch our team win, lose and draw.’  This isn’t likely to replace ‘A club like no other’ on your season ticket, but it is the ultimate truism in football and we should all hear it occasionally.

‘We deserve frankness, in times of success and failure.’

‘We deserve to know there is no way to bridge the ‘gap’.’

‘We deserve to be told the old ways are gone forever and there is nothing anyone can do about it.’

‘We deserve to know if we put the club in the hands of a charlatan.’

‘We deserve to know that many of us will never see the league title go to Ibrox in our lifetime.’

You will never see these phrases on a bedspread at the gates to Murray Park, but the day will come when they are acknowledged truths.

  3. Heard Paul lambert on 5Live yesterday morning. Interviewing him about the Stoke game. Nicky Campbell then asks him about Celtic winning the semi final, straight away he replies Celtic need a strong Ranjurs , I could understand it if the question had been asked but all he needed to say was well done, pleased etc.

It really annoyed me and I was going to post it yesterday but didn’t want to bring a happy blog down. Noticed that a couple of the usual suspects tried to and failed.

  7. Hebcelt, Paul lambert has been discussed a few times on here and many have great affection for him and to be fair he was excellent for us, having said that I always rated Neil Lennon above him and that goes for being a manager too, he’s uninspiring to say the least.

Celtic said after the LNS decision that they were “surprised” at the conclusions but would say no more until the legal process came to a conclusion. When it did with the Supreme Court decision Celtic called publicly for a complete review of the LNS tribunal. Within days the SFA came back to say that after legal advice there was no basis under which the tribunals findings could be reviewed. Celtic then called on their fellow SPFL Clubs to back a review. Aberdeen and Hibernian publicly undermined this call. In addition whilst Celtic were calling for a review Regan, I think, tried to scare them off by threatening to release all the correspondence between Celtic and the SFA. Peter Lawwell called his bluff and released the information themselves. Funnily enough rather than showing Celtic being complicit in the cover up it proved we had been the only ones to question how the huns had received a Licence and that a full review of everything that had happened regarding the Wee and Big Tax cases was essential for the good of Football.

Celtic are the only club to publicly speak on this matter but they are still the only club to have their motives questioned by our enemies and our some of own supporters. Maybe if some of the heat was turned on the 40 other cowardly clubs in the SPFL instead of the one club to make any effort then more might be achieved.

  13. Club 1872 Member Update

    Dear member,

In common with all Rangers supporters, the directors of Club 1872 are extremely concerned by the disgraceful capitulation of the Rangers team that faced Celtic on Sunday. We have had contact from members asking us to convey their concerns to Rangers and can reassure them and the wider support that this has been done.

Rangers supporters deserve a team which as a bare minimum shows pride and commitment in the club they represent. That pride and commitment was sorely lacking on Sunday and the responsibility for that must be borne at all levels of the club. What we have seen this season is not good enough and we know that the Rangers board and executive team are well aware of that fact. Rangers supporters will no doubt once again show their incredible support for the club through season ticket renewals but we now need to see real progress towards returning Rangers to the top of Scottish football with a management team and quality of player that can secure success.

It is clear that a great deal of further investment is going to be required to take the club to the position that our supporters correctly believe it should occupy. Millions have been ploughed into the club by the current board and investors but it has not seen a satisfactory return on the pitch. We cannot just assume that because we are Rangers we will automatically return to the top at some point. It is going to take further investment, good decision making and everyone working together.

Much of the responsibility for that progress is going to fall on the current RIFC board but we believe Rangers supporters, through Club 1872, can also shoulder part of the burden – because it’s our club. That is why we are asking supporters to join us and invest heavily in the club and also why we are in negotiations with RIFC about securing a board place. Supporters can play a major role in helping to take our club back to the top but we must accept that responsibility and not simply wait for others to do it for us. Everyone will have to play their part if we are to achieve the success that we all believe the supporters deserve.

We fully expect to see a reaction from everyone at Rangers over the coming weeks, to what we believe is a watershed moment. We expect the players to show the commitment and desire that was sorely missing from their performance on Sunday, in order to secure second place and European football for the supporters next season. We expect the board and management of the club to take decisive steps to ensure that the product on the park next season is of a considerably higher quality and rewards the supporters’ loyalty through difficult times. We also hope that the support will rally once again and join us to make sure that we make a significant, direct financial contribution to taking Rangers back to the top.

I could be mistaken (I haven’t read back on this stuff in some time.) ….. but I thought Rules G8-10 allowed appeals, and I seem to recall something about seeing an email about an appeal period, and someone from Celtic not being available/overseas… but, as I say, I could be mixing that up with another issue ….

and, even if I am mistaken on that point ….it is but one issue in a long saga, and it doesnt change my feeling about how this has been handled….

I get that people have a lot invested emotionally in Celtic, and dont want to consider the possiblity that our Board may, to some degree, be part of the problem…. but, on the facts, I think it is absurd not to consider that possibility and irresponsible as a shareholders not to ask the questions…

As a socialist I have some sympathy with the bedspread ‘rebels’. They are leaderless and deliberately so. The unionist working classes in Ireland and Scotland have been used, sold up the garden path and abandoned. Their public representatives and spokespeople are all Mable and unwilling to lead them out of their cup-de-sac. History will show that the game was up for them in 1997 both politically and for their favourite fitba club.

As a Celtic fan it’s funny to watch but it is genuinely tempered for me by watching them continue further in to the abyss of intolerance and bigotry as they search in vain for a way to their imagined glorious past. A past which gave them a few shillings more in the workplace than the sub strata of society below them at the time – a sub strata which as a result had to look to education and social cohesion as a way to progress themselves.

The penny will drop for most of them eventually but until it does the slide to fascism is inevitable for many. Something similar happened with the white English working class when the industrial bases were decimated, unions destroyed, the Labour Party abandoning them to cosy up with more affluent voters. I suppose this applied in Scotland too and accounts also for what we are seeing there in some groups. Like itvor not we need to be reaching out and trying to lift them out of their more, or at least leaving the gate open for them.

As for their team and club though, well, that’s just a handy metaphor for their real world demise. And it’s as funny as f……

  20. In the report I read, Stan didn’t mention a strong rangers, rather he pointed out how poor they are and that Hibs and Aberdeen were more of a challenge.

He did mention that greater competition, overall, would help Celtic and Scottish football.

Which is very different from the strong rangers rubbish, imho, and probably true.

I did say to Bournesouprecipe that Broony the CFC best man falls champion.
