We don’t need no stinkin’ courtesies

1494

Scottish football has afforded defending champions the courtesy of a home game on the first day of the season to allow the league championship flag to be unfurled at the start of the new campaign for as many decades as I remember.

As this has, in effect, become a courtesy to give Celtic a home start to the campaign in as many years as my sons can remember, we’ll be at Tynecastle on the opening day of the season. Flag Day will have to wait.

That said, I like the idea of taking on Hearts away, then our nearest challengers, Aberdeen, at home. Come through this successfully and we will be in excellent shape for the campaign.

The Aberdeen game comes immediately after the final round of European qualifiers, so we have an opportunity to finish August in a real high – if we get the preparatory work done early enough.

Bring it on.  We don’t need no stinkin’ courtesies.

Think it was two Euro tournaments ago he said it . The fact that it was on the BBC that really bugged me , heard that nonsense many times over the years but never as blatantly as that on the national broadcaster

Wasn’t it Lawreson who chose the Lisbon Lions as the greatest ever UK side?

I think it’s something a lot of Celtic fans would be interested in knowing. Not all of them of course, but a lot.

Perhaps – but that doesn’t preclude him being an arrogant tosser, which is what we were discussing. Anyway, Celtic fans don’t need him to tell us the Lions were the greatest ever UK side. We know that already.

I’ve always taken ‘that nonsense’ to be a reflection of the Italian’s less than total commitment to fighting for fascism, and to their credit.

  4. In all honesty Ernie nobody has ever put it to me that way before. I’m embarrassed it didn’t occur to me .

  5. “I remember there being a great atmosphere in both games. But I will always remember the return tie in Barcelona as being very special because I went to their chapel just before kick off. I went there with Martin O’Neill to pray and it was very strange to do this before a game. It was about 10 minutes from kick-off. I remember I had my Celtic kit on at the time. We then walked out and on to the pitch and the stadium was massive. We played very well that night, especially in defence.”

Just a thought pal. It seems like a meat and drink issue for unions. I’m surprised there hasn’t been any negotiations over new contracts/ changes in contracts. Someone on union side needs a boot in the Jacobs if there hasn’t been!

  9. I enjoyed the football and I have just read back. It’s interesting to read the objections to Turkey’s proposed membership of the EU on Human Rights grounds. Turkey has numerous questions to answer in respect of Human Rights. From Turkey’s Department of Foreign Affairs site, Turkey seems to have had no problems gaining membership in the below organisations…

Perhaps those with genuine concerns for Human Rights could also look at Britain’s Human Rights record in places like Ireland, Los Malvinas, Iraq and Afghanistan. The Chilcot Report is due soon I think?

How come Human Rights is suddenly an issue when membership of the EU is proposed and not NATO, The Council of Europe or the UN? Who knows?

Not been impressed with the standard of football at the Euros so far.UEFA have made a mistake increasing the number of teams to 24,it’s diluted the quality and led to too many negative displays. The fact that twice as many sides will qualify from the group stages as are eliminated is a bit of mockery, imho.

Hopefully once the knockout games begin we’ll see more attacking performances and a higher level of quality.Only Spain and Croatia have given us decent football so far, with Iniesta being the standout.Wee genius he is.

Italy have also played decent football (for a change :o)

I think the increased number of teams (and qualifying) have made the games less intense though have made the final games more interesting. Usually in the Euros you know by now who has qualified and the final group games have zero meaning.

It’s still international football, which is always pretty dull. I just hope the best 8 teams (those that play attacking football) make it through to the quarters.

  22. BABASONICOS71 on

    THE_HUDDLE…

I think Italy have shown flair in flashes but most of their quality has been at the defensive end of their team, with Bonucci particularly good. They look as though they genuinely enjoy defending, and I respect that.I just prefer attacking football.

I feel as though because a majority of teams will make it through to the next round there’s a kind of nuisance value to most of the games,as if teams are just wanting to get these ties out the way before the real stuff begins.

Agree with you 100% about the last 8.

He’s by far NIs best player and wouldn’t look out of place in any of the other “home nation” teams.

Crazy though when he played for the huns he never really stood out, always decent but never outstanding. I’d never at the time thought Celtic should sign him, but I’d take him now (well i wouldn’t but ability wise he’d start for us).

  25. Lowry 3 bogeys in a row, DJ to win now (and save the refs taking it away from him due to the stroke penalty).
