We knew KT bids were coming

169

We have known bids would arrive for Kieran Tierney since shortly after he made his Celtic debut.  There have been inquiries as to his availability for more than two years (all discouraged).  Everton were interested a year ago, but they were chased, and did not take the matter as far as a bid.

Celtic are certainly in no hurry to see the player go.  He has four years left on his contract and he will only appreciate in value over the next two seasons.  From what I hear, Kieran has shown no indication of wanting to leave.  This can change when contracts worth four or five times current earnings are offered, but Kieran is not going to pull a Moussa Dembele-type stunt.

Top players eventually play in the top leagues for six-figure-per-week wages and Kieran is a top player.  He is not going to remain at Celtic throughout his career.  When he goes, the fee will be important.  Dembele increased our top fee by almost 50%.  That £20m raised the value of all other Celtic players.  A big inhibitor to Celtic has been our inability to attract bids that Benfica and Ajax receive for their players.  If we cannot narrow that gap with Kieran, we never will.

There are plenty of targets he could stay to help deliver over the next two seasons, but right now, the club’s overwhelming target is to qualify for the Champions League.  All other considerations, for club and player, have to be secondary.

Another twist in the Turnbull transfer?

On selling KT: we can live with it if we invest elsewhere in the team, otherwise its pointless to sell and the bank the money (although that has been our approach generally).

Qualifiers are fast approaching and no one yet in the door; Sevco have 7 new players. Our aim should be to front load signings to give us the best chance of CL qualification. If we fail to qualify, then we sell. Waiting to see if we qualify is hardly conducive to the team’s progress.

In other words we’ll not invest to qualify for the UCL, wont sell KT in the meantime but if we don’t manage to fluke into the group stages we will hawk Kieran off to the highest bidder. It’s good to know that Peter has all bases covered like last season and wont be flapping like the rest of us over qualification. Better still if we don’t qualify he can keep the cost base under tight control and no bonuses paid out. It depresses me that I’m one of many that puts up with this sh***.

There are two teams in Scotland in recent memory that have won 9 in a row. Neither managed 10.

Evidently 9 in a row did not help them win 10; in the same vein, a treble treble won’t help us next season (especially seeing as the team and management that achieved the treble treble will be vastly different to the one going for 9IAR).

Added to that, do you think 8IAR or the treble treble will act as a tonic if we blow 9 or 10? In the old Scottish football landscape it might, but seeing as the challenger was only formed in 2012, has only been in the top division 3 years, has a rookie manager and is run by a criminal, I’d wager it won’t.

    Funny thing…

Those clubs who don’t have the balance sheet as king have all gone bust or atleast into administration.

Now that would be bad management of a club…

Implement plans & startegies that carefully move it into receivership…

KT & VVD understand the importance of CL football income to Celtic .

Paul – relevant stuff in your leader today.

Chasing the wrong Holy Grail will end in tears.

Some might suggest that our sustained run of domesticl trophies is because we haven’t had a serious European campaign to speak of…

Someone else mentioned that Celtic fans praise the Ajax model of success & financial sustainablity but the same fans don’t want to have either the sale of players in their prime (Tierney) nor could they easily accept lean years for trophies. More significanly, they couldn’t stomach the newest club winning the league.

Celtic fans want it all – continued unborken success, financial sutainability & not selling our best players.

Ajax are more pragmatic. When their players are in their prime & their star still rising, they will sell them for much more than we can dream of. When we do that, the players are considered to be traitors to a greater of lesser degree – Dalglish, Nicholas, Crerand, etc. Yes I know that many of those players were sold against their will. Now it is the player’s wishes that determine most moves.

Domestic supremacy on it’s own has a limited shelf life – we need success in Europe to raise the profile of those players that we would seek to sell in that “Ajax” marketplace.

KT will be sold, in my opinion, in this window. He has to do what is right for him & he is in his prime. His value may increase, but only if we get a sustained run in Europe & he remains injury free. Neither of these are stick ons, so for both club & player, a move in this window might just be right.

He is a cultural hero with fans but he is not anywhere hear our best player.

Full back is not the hardest position to play – even in our system, and it often happens that converted midfielders or wingers become the best professional fullbacks.

In other words, he is eminently replaceable as a fulback but less so as the fans on field MC and cultural icon.

If the price is right he shoud be sold.

What price? Whatever the market will pay, so interest from more than one big club will help get us nearer that price.

KT will always be a Celt even if he has to ply his trade in teams that stand a bettert chance of playing in the quarter finals of the Champions League.

His best gift to Celtic now would be 25 million quid.

Now, are there any decent left backs around?

Some sense in your post at 8:26.

But, on the whole, Ajax’s model is still superior to Celtics.

Ajax have two legitimate competitors, while for the most part of the last 8 years, Celtic have had none.

That is one of my issues … we had a free run at the league and Europe, and should have been using that time to build up our European game. But, it does seem that Celtic’s ambitions are focused on, and tied to, the Old Firm. Scottish football has to lose its parochialism or it is going to continue to fall behind the rest of the footballing world.

As for KT, i agree and disagree. I agree that, if we are going to adopt the ‘Ajax model’ players such as he will inevitably be sold. I am okay with that. We need to produce (and sell ) more like him.

Where we may disagree is that I think he is (was?) one of the best young left backs in the game, and real left backs (not converted wingers… but real, proper defenders) are rare these days. And ones who can defend, but also get forward and cross well … they are rare as hen’s teeth.

I am on record as saying that, although Robertson is a better player at the moment, KT has even more potential, and with good health, better coaching, teammates and opposition, KT would be one of the best left backs in the world. I dont think he will become that by staying in Scotland. I hope for his sake he moves. I hope that, for Celtic’s sake, they get a fair fee for him.

Ajax have had 40 years of buildig their academy, and recruiting and selling players. But their history of producing good young players is why they will get 80 million for DeLight (spelling?). Until we can churn out players like that on a regular basis, sales like VVD (with a decent sell on clause) are likely the best we can do. But, if we develop and sell enough players like KT, eventually the market will adjust and reflect that.

I thought that KT wasn’t a fullback when he was younger, but a midfielder. Might have got that wrong.

As for the Robertson v Tierney thing – I agree that at the moment Robertson is better (my son disagrees)

Playing with better players in a better league where your opponents will get carded if they fracture your jaw or blooter you in other ways – will make him a better player. Robertson was good at Dundee Utd but he came on a ton when he started oplaying in the EPL.
