We want a win, but let’s not kid ourselves

964

We are almost week on from Morton (our only mustn’t lose game in March) but there will be a business-like atmosphere around Lennoxtown today as the team prepare to go to Ibrox, scene of three consecutive wins since Newco were promoted to top flight football.  Brendan and his players are all too aware of the big talk coming from Murray Park.  If ever they needed motivation, they didn’t need to look far.

Fans of either colour, who have been around long enough, will recognise the occasion, but this is not the way you and I used to feel about going to Ibrox.  Back in the old days I preferred to go there as slight underdogs, which was often as good as it got for Celtic fans.  Now, we travel to every ground in the country as strong favourites, no matter what our form.  This is nothing like it was in the pre-liquidation years.

I want to win, of course, but I would have been devastated if we’d lost to Morton.  Sunday’s game cannot reach me the same way.  This is a step on the road to what will hopefully be a treble, don’t pretend it is about winning the league, it’s just not.

Your post earlier in the week stimulated debate (always good for a blog) but I’d you don’t mind can I ask you one thing, you said you enjoyed Man Citeh v Celtic as it wasn’t Scottish football was your justification, apologies if I picked you up wrong but in my opinion the “Champions” League” is the mist corrupt football version of sport on the go …

Again, not a dig, I have read your posts but for the life of me don’t understand why you wouldn’t pass Celtic on to your children, don’t pass the Sfa or any hatred just keep it Celtic… they willl thank you for it :-)

Thanks guys. Due to ill health, I have not attended a single game this season. I have a pre op on Monday and, hopefully, this will allow a successful op in the next 3 months. My ST is being used by a relative and I will probably renew come April. As far as CQN is concerned, I was brought up to stay away from where I wasn’t wanted. Bullying is a frightful thing. HH

Ron Bacardi, sorry for the late reply.

Father John McGinley did replace Father James O’Hare as a curate at St Laurence’s.

The parish priest , Father Michael O’Connell, at the time used to take myself and two other parishioners to some of our games. Big Mick as he was known by the parishioners was a huge Celtic fan and was well known at Celtic Park as he was formerly the Parish Priest at St Michael’s at Parkhead Cross.

Father McGinley travelled with us on my first game at Tynecastle in November 1976 , when we won 4 3 after being 3 1 down after about half an hour. Willie Gibson had scored a hat trick.

My mum was disappointed when she heard John McGinley had left the priesthood.

  15. Let’s cut to the chase here. How many of on here have ever had it so good. Iam involved in the amateur game so don’t get to see much live other than on the television. As always in football quality will tell. The one thingabout Brendan is that he and his staff are tactically aware .Wehave never had it so good and it will continue from tomorrow onwards on. .

  16. Mahe the Madman on

    Wits,

You wrote you can’t understand the mentality of some people on here,,well that’s funny because I’ve laid my mentality out very clearly for the world to read over the last few days.

I feel the current custodians of Glasgow Celtic football club have failed me.

My morals prevent me from taking anymore part of Scottish football because it is rotten to the core and a vehicle for sectarianism.

You might say that’s not their fault to which I would reply then show me they tried to fight it . Really tried.

DD- they are great rivals. PL-old firm is a phrase we no longer use. Well if they are dead say so, publically. And don’t treat the new version the same.

My support is now focused solely on our charitable aims and not the football team.

If the report is a whitewash then, like the pogues ,thousands are sailing.

I really wish to move on , I’ve taken up enough room on the blog and my stance is public.

I don’t wanna look or feel like a broken record.

Perhaps we should leave it. It is a Saturday night.

    Take care

    GFTB,

Gerry I justified to myself watching that Man City game because ,,

It’s not Scottish football which I’m boycotting

I knew I wouldn’t hear any songs of hate

The ref didn’t have a sectarian bias against us

It would be pure football, not lump it and get into them crap

It was an illegal stream , I wasn’t making millionaires richer

It was broadcast via USA TV and the commentators would be fair or at least if they did prefer city to win it wasn’t because they were playing the taigs.

    I could go on.

Yes they (uefa/FIFA) are corrupt,,won’t give them a penny,,but at least they (uefa and away fans) dont want us to go home because the famines over now,,they actually like us and compliment us regularly.

I’m moving on Gerry,,,I hope you are well and enjoy the game tomorrow. I really do mucker. If it brings you joy,,by all means.

VFR, when James O’Hare moved to St Roch’s , my parents went up to see him a few times. When they came back , my dad would say , James seemed somewhat disenchanted at the time.

    BRTH,

I’m no surprised you don’t think there’s as much overt sectarian racism in Scotland for a couple of reasons, first being as you admit, you don’t recognise it when its abusing you and second being, the people in your circle of contacts are a bit better educated and know the risks involved with displaying overt sectarian racism, that does not equate with not being a sectarian racist bigot, just more careful about the right company to let the guard down.

    ————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Hey big man where have you been and how are you doing? I hope all is well with you.

Now, about the above, If you read my post again I don’t think you will find that I say anywhere that I don’t think that racism and sectarianism doesn’t exist or that it is not on occasion overt and in your face.

The point that I was making is that Madman Mahe had previously said that he was of the view that the racism and sectarianism was such that he has chosen not to follow and support Celtic as much as he would like because of it and that he has deliberately chosen not to expose his daughter to Celtic and Scotland because of the level of sectariansim, bias and cheating etc.

I paraphrase, but that is what I understood him to mean.

My view, as stated, is that in my experience, and it is only my experience, I don’t come into see that level of bigotry on a daily basis, and indeed the majority, but not all, of the people I come into contact with are neither sectarian or bigoted or whatever — in my opinion.

Further, I state clearly that my own preference is that my kids do know about Scotland and the fact that is sectarianism and bigotry and that they face up to that no matter how and where it shoes itself, and irrespective of who shows it.

That is the gist of what I was trying to day.

However, with respect, your comment above is far too wide and generalist.

With regard to the bank manager chap I couldn’t explain his behaviour at first but when I mentioned it to Davie Hope’s Grandson, who worked in Financial Services at the time, he was able to tell me that he had clients who were all having the same problem with the same guy — and every single one of them had Irish sounding first names.

That is why I didn’t spot it but once I had the info which spelt it out then I made sure that it was nipped in the bud there and then. BTW the guy was also very good at falsifying documents and leaving completely false records of meetings and actions. A sick and villanous individual who could have caused someone real harm.

As for my circle of friends, contacts and acquaintances, no offence but you know nothing about them. I quite deliberately don’t associate much with the “polite to your face” professional type punters – and I have come across more than a few – as I have no time for them whatsoever. One very aspiring middle class Rangers supporting Lawyer once told me drunkenly that I was no more than a “punter with a law degree” to which I replied “And don’t ever forget it!”

There are many in the middle and professional classes who are jumped up two face bigots or racists, but there are many more – many many more – who are straightforward honest fair minded folk who don’t have an ounce of bigotry in my experience and, yes, in my judgement, which is not as immune to the existence of sectariansim and bigotry as you might think.

Equally, outwith those middle classes and “better educated” circles, there are loads of ordinary working class folk who perhaps don’t have the benefit of as much further education as others who are completely devoid of any sectarianism or prejudice in my experience.

That is just the way I see it, mind.

  21. FERGUSSLAYEDTHEBLUES

A few years ago when the old huns were still alive, I saw a prog about the emergency services in Glasgow before, during and after games against thems, believe it or not, there was worse violence, more hospital admissions etc when they won as opposed to lost, seems their sense of supremacy got them worked up into a frenzy and they just attacked anything remotely associated with us, when they lost they tended to go home and to quote Willie Wadell, give their wives a bit of a bashing.

At the end of the day someone gets it I suppose, how sad.

Mob mentality, famous for it. We’ve all seen it.

Having said that,we all know that they’re not all like that. And I’ve got reason to thank a half-dozen or so in such a case for still having my Dad around. Plus his brother and two others.
