Week with a sting in the tail

781

The narrative was set for Aberdeen.  After six consecutive league wins without losing a goal, their bubble was burst when they drew with Dundee and St Johnstone, but it hasn’t turned out that way.  They have scored 10 and not conceded in the three league games since.  Out of the Scottish and League Cups, their entire focus is on beating teams less resourceful than them in the league, which is everyone apart from Celtic.

Despite Celtic’s impressive ability to collect points dating back several months, Aberdeen are hanging in there, a remarkable achievement.   The only thing which separates the teams are Celtic’s two 2-1 wins in their previous meetings this season.  From Saturday afternoon Aberdeen’s complete focus will be on their visit to Celtic Park on Sunday.

By contrast, Celtic will return to Glasgow early Friday morning after their trip to Milan.  They will face Aberdeen pretty much as that trip leaves them.

If I was offered a win and a defeat this week, I’d take the win in Milan, but we will need enough in te tank for Sunday’s game.

Thanks to everyone who booked a ticket over the weekend for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner on Friday on 13 March at the Kerrydale Suite.  Anyone still to catch up, let me know, celticquicknews@gmail.com

ive sang ROH a million times but never wanted to join the IRA and I’ve sang the Armagh sniper a million times and never wanted to shoot anybody and I’m sure there’s millions of zombies who sing the billy boys but don’t want to kill Catholics.

It’s not the songs mate it’s the person

The Soldier’s Song was a regular part of the repertoire in my days of following the Bhoys. Best version was coming out of Rugby Park near the end of the 1965/66 season. We had just beaten the defending champions 2-0 and for the first time in my Celtic supporting life I really felt we were going to win the League. On the way back to the buses the whole street echoed to the Soldier’s Song. However I later became a bit uncomfortable with it as so many fans did not seem to know the words – especially the last 2 lines. As a National Anthem I thought it was a bit disrespectful singing it in such a fashion. Less concerned with that now though. I have been involved with the Irish community in this part of the world for many years now and whenever we have the National Anthem at a function it is in Irish. So if I am singing it as a genuine National Anthem then I use Irish but for the fitba and less “formal” occasions then I use English. Last year was at a funeral of a well known character in the local Irish community. His favourite song was the Soldiers Song and the congregation at the funeral mass was asked to sing it ( 2 verses and chorus) as the coffin was taken from the church. The words were printed in English on the order of service for those who did not know them. As I knew the words i did not refer to the sheet (as did a few others) . However the person who had been asked to print them in English had taken it too literally and as half the church were singing “tonight we man the bearna baoil” the other half were singing “we man the gap of danger!” Also noticed that a lot of Irish people had to refer to the sheet for the words. The reason for that was explained to me by one lady from Leitrim who said that when she was at school and at any other function it was always sung in Irish even though not many people spoke the actual language. Did not hear the Radio Clyde/Hugh Keevins rant but it is the same story as 50 odd years ago. At that time when anyone was asked if they thought Rangers policy of refusing to employ Catholics was wrong the answer was – “But Celtic fly the Irish Flag!!”” Now there is logic!

Since Klan’s raison d’etre is racist yes they are a racist organisation. Whether they are all b@stards or not…

Not all Rangers supporters are ‘orange’ or indeed b@stards. I’m guessing. Anymore than we’re all ‘fenian’ or ‘b@stards’.

Agreed. How the Orange Order are allowed to pollute our streets baffles me.

I was once neraly arrested in Edinburgh to have the cheek of wearing a Celtic top when they were marching along Princes Street. I had no idea that it was even happening. There were 4 of us enjoying a few beers in the sun in the gardens and 2 of my mates had Rangers tops on. They were more annoyed about it than me. We were all threatened with arrest. I think my mates realised there and then what we have to put up with.

  8. The best thing all Celtic supporters should do is don’t phone.radio stations .write to the media don’t give them a chance of dragging us into Sevcos problems.this one is as bad as the other.needs to be put to bed.we all no who the culprits are.so bhoys don’t give that lousy media a inch.then I suppose the way they conduct themselves.there is plenty of people out there .who would sell there souls to them.I just wish our club would come out and say its sevcos problem don’t drag us into it.every time there fans sing these Sectarian Songs

Heading to Copenhagen on Friday for a long weekend.

Any ideas of a bar which might show the Aberdeen game?

CelticBars website not showing anything for the city.

    Any suggestions welcome.

The Orange Order is a Protestant fraternity. Derogatory comments referencing “Orange” is plainly a religious aggravation, has been held to be numerously in the courts, and is inarguably discriminatory.

    Hope that helps.

The focus was frequently on Celtic when Rangers were dying , and the deflection to the Soldiers Song is because Sevco are next.

They are hell bent on fast tracking their way to oblivion, nothing can stop them self destruct, the evidence is there in the full public glare in the League Cup semi final, in Kirkcaldy, and next up Falkirk.

Their support is presently answerable to no one, there is literally no one there, nothing other than the stub for a spent crisis loan

  12. I see the huns are starting a petition to have the word ‘hun’ described as sectarian or something. I always felt the word meant ‘a rangers supporter who hates catholics’ but I will be willing to abide by any legal judgement.

    Canamalar,

You obviously skim read the article.

The migrant workers bit was just a small part, mentioned in passing.

However, the responibility for their treatment lies ultimately with the authorities.

The policies of Qatar Airlines, Blatter’s appeasement of the homosexual laws, etc., are other indicators that association with them could lead to a tarnishing of the Barca image.

Put it this way, I wouldn’t like Celtic to court them, even though the SFA are flapping their skirts.

Also, I don’t care about whataboutery.

Anyway, if you wish, you can have the last word.h

Just looking at some of the comments on the BBC live news feed. I now know where we’ve all been going wrong.

The way to prevent Rangers fans from belting out sectarian tunes is to close Kafflik schools.

Simples…why didn’t we think of that before. That will stop all the nasty singing and the Orange Order parades.

It is because their bigotry is challenged….that they feel the need to be vociferous.

They are clinging on to their orange identity.

They are ignorant and stupid….that’s fine.

But when I hear some idiot say that the soldier song is sectarian…..it er slightly annoys me.

  19. What are they complaining about?

The definition of hun which I found, apart from a geographical and a chronological error, it seemed rather accurate:

Hun: A member of a warlike Asiatic nomadic people who invaded and ravaged Europe in the 4th–5th centuries.

In fact, it does seem to describe what they themselves proudly proclaim with the term ‘dignity’.

  20. Mea culpa,

Any name we call them they will eventually object to.

Call them the…..erm….’nice lot’ for long enough and they’ll complain.

I believe Nil By Mouth reckon that hun is sectarian, because according to them, it’s synonymous with Protestant.

I think that tells you all you need to know about Nil By Mouth. Clueless, ignorant, supercilious, sanctimonious middle class clowns. Probably Mac users to boot.

Here’s a couple of huns making it clear what the meaning of hun actually is.

“At risk of now alienating Celtic supporters, I was brought up in Glasgow supporting Rangers and, unlike the letter writers, I have never found the term ‘Hun’ offensive. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been called it and I’ve never taken it as anything other than gentle ribbing. Celtic supporters I know find no offence in being called a ‘Tim’.”

John McLellan, former editor of The Scotsman.

  23. Geordie, I know. If we called them a bunch a little angels they’d claim that was sectarian.

I still like the terms ‘Sevco’ and ‘Sevconians’.

They cannot deny that the term Sevco is historically accurate.

Without Sevco, there would have been no ‘The Rangers’.

And most important of all, they hate it !!

It reminds them that ‘Rangers FC’ died.

No amount of spin can alter the fact, ‘Rangers FC’ died.

Isn’t it strange? Catholics celebrate the fact that Jesus Christ died….

Stranger still, Protestants, which the Sevconians claim to be, also celebrate the same event.

So what is all the fuss about exactly?

    A strange, strange world….
