What lies ahead of Celtic, impossible in the history of the game

195

Yesterday and today people at Barcelona and Ajax will be appalled at how they threw away three goal leads in the Champions League semi-finals.  This can happen when you fail to concentrate, even for periods in games.

Imagine the taste of despair, failure and sheer waste in Barcelona and Amsterdam right now.  Then consider our job against Hearts at Hampden.  Hearts beat us already this season and turned us over in our own freak result last season.  Winning a treble treble is rarer than Celtic reaching the European Cup Final.

Moments without concentration and it could slip away.  This is why trebles are difficult and why what lies ahead of us has been impossible in the history of the game.

  1. From the previous thread..

I fully understand some folk being unhappy that Two Clubs who arent Champions of their League contesting the CL Final, But….

By some Major Miracle, IF Celtic were to finish 2nd/3rd in the SPL, and UEFA Rules had seriously altered and Celtic despite NOT being Champions, played in the CL, and reached the Final…would ANY of us be unhappy…I seriously doubt it ?

I suspect most of us would simply say to any Hun Critics who were raging at celtic being in that CL Final…” Thems the rules, we have simply adhered to UEFA Rules…Simples” !

At the same time we would be complaining ( Quite rightly), about the ticket allocation, Prices, touts etc etc .

If you’re still lurking around (hopefully) is there a tenuous link or hidden code to the snippets of Beatles lyrics that you’ve been posting these last few days. I do get the connection to Pablophanque but it’s the apparent randomness of the particular chosen songs that’s got me sitting here thinking?

I’d say it was more a game management issue for Ajax. Maybe easy with hindsight but should De Ligt have gone up for the free kick at the start of the second half? As soon as the ball went past him I knew it was going to be a goal. From that point the comeback was always on and plenty of time for it. Not sure where the five minutes of injury time came from mind you. Maybe one of those “big league bonuses” you sometimes get?

Liverpool looked like they were far fitter than Barcelona. You have to admire the job Klopp has done there, as he did at Dortmund.

German-trained coaches just seem to have something a bit extra about them. The players always look fitter, well-prepared, technically good, strong mentality, tactically aware and adaptable.

Not sure what his former assistant, Zeljko Buvac, is up to but I would have thought he was worth getting in touch with to see if he would be interested in the manager’s job here.

    maybe in 2 years time

but in my uneducated opinion, this is exactly the type of thought process that i hope the board are steering well clear of when deciding on the next manager

the next manager should only have 1 main remit – and that is to win 10 in a row.

everything else – beautiful football, developing youngsters etc has to take a back seat

so picking some guy who knows nothing about scottish soccerball just because he was once assistant manager of a german team is a complete no-no this time around

once the 10 in a row situation is settled one way or the other then maybe we can consider project managers

I have yet too see another game played at the same pace as the 2011-12 German Cup Final when Klopp’s BvB put Bayern to the sword 5-2. The pace was kept up for the whole 90 minutes.

    Celtic has 31 co-efficient points.

Should we and the other seeded teams progress through the Euro qualifiers according to seeding, we would be heading to meet Young Boys (27.5), Zagreb (29.5), Bate Borisov(27.5) or Copenhagen(31) or another team seeded 27.5 or below in the final qualifying round.

    Celtic – 2015, 2016, 2017, 2028, 2019

    7.00 3.00 7.00 8.00 6.00

The 4 teams mentioned have won the following points in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2028, 2019

    Young Boys – 8.00 1.50 6.00 5.00 7.00

    Bate Borisov – 6.00 8.00 1.50 4.00 8.00

    Dinamo Zagreb – 4.00 6.00 4.00 1.50 14.00

    Copenhagen – 3.00 1.00 16.00 7.00 4.00

Based on that record, Copenhagen is the team in decline but all teams have won at least 11 coefficient points in the past 2 seasons so not much between us all.

    Let’s all do the huddle

We will all have different views on this (educated or otherwise!). For me it should be about continuing to improve the players individually and collectively, with the focus on re-establishing ourselves in Europe. If we can achieve this we will be easily good enough to succeed in Scotland and ten will be something that just “happens” along the way. I don’t see it as an “end point” or something that should be specifically targeted (not even sure how you would do that).

Europe brings in money and attracts and retains players.

We have won eight titles with a medium-long term strategy. I think it would be more of a risk to change course and go all short-term.

Anyway, it would a bit boring if we all thought the same way! HH.

  11. HRVATSKI JIM

Bate Borisov for the last decade or so have always been considered a dangerous side.

That said, I’ve clocked some of their results in the last couple of seasons, and they too would seem in decline.

And do forgive the business speak, but I think it’s relevant.

Whether a football club or a company, if the strategy is to achieve continuous improvement. Growth

Then progress in Europe, 10 i.a.r etc will be a by-product of a successful continuous improvement strategy.

For those that think 10 i.a.r is the sole focus, I can only thank our lucky stars, that these people are not in positions of power within our club.

  18. Looked over a list of potential bosman signings for Celtic and there was a lot of rubbish to dig through.

Martin Olsson is somebody who caught the eye. A good experienced left back to cover for Tierney.

On top of that I saw Okazaki is due to leave Leicester. I love that guy. Get him signed up!
