When we were kings

579

Our now-annual defeat against St Johnstone yesterday was a timely reminder of how close to defeat any team can be if they are even slightly off their game.  Despite fighting the urge not to be disrespectful to yesterdays’ victors, they are a poor team, previously without a win, bottom of the league and they had to cancel training during the week due to illness in their small squad.

But, they deservedly beat Celtic.

Kris Commons was a bright light among the largely disorganised looking team structure.  Tony Watt also did well, even if he is still beating himself up for passing up the best chance of the game in the dying seconds, but defensively we were turned over, the midfield singularly failed to control the ball and Gary Hooper looked miles away from scoring his first league goal of the season.

Did we need a sharp reminder of the level of performance required against Benfica on Wednesday?  It looks like it.

When we were kings

Don’t worry too much, a team with Fallon, Gemmell, McNeill, Murdoch, Auld, Johnstone and Wallace were turned over 0-2 at home by Hearts in 1969.  A few days later Eusebio and Benfica, who lost the 1968 European Cup final after extra-time, a year after Celtic won the tournament, walked off Celtic Park having lost 3-0.

Artur Jorge played for Benfica that night.  Apparently he still lurks in the corridors.

“I remember “dogging” school to go to that game at Shawfield”

Back in the days when dogging was an activity you didn’t have to be afronted about.

  2. dena29,

In the case of Edward Ursus in particular there were some who reckoned that there was no such thing as a good Rangers supporter. Edward Ursus proved time and time again, that that was wrong.

Others, like Neil90(?), feel rebuffed, I think. What marked this site originally was the respect accorded to everyone who posted. There were no cyber hardmen. People simply put their opinion before the others. It would be great to get back to that.

If even a wee sweary word crept in, people were quickly reminded that children read the site. I would be all for our getting back to such standards. There is no need to abuse anyone else.

I cringed many times when Ed was given the treatment.

I hate bullies more than anything else. I have never met the man but I think when CQN stalwarts are engaging with a “hun” and let’s face it, Ed is not a “hun” as he is a proper football supporter and he should always be treated that way, it is a true indication of a man of integrity.

I couldn’t remember Ed from when he first posted but remember when he posted a the time you talk of and he seemed a decent guy just into his football, training kids and stuff but he did get hounded a wee bit and I’m genuinely sorry that he did. Would like to ask one question though and that is how long would a Celtic fan last on a sevco site?

Do you seriously believe yourself, yes those guys were great players and legends but could you see Auld last 10 mins in modern game? I’d say sent off every week, stop harking back for 40 years ago, you’re starting to sound like an Engerland Hun

  6. Posters come and go, for a whole host of reasons. I can’t bring myself to say I ‘miss’ someone who posts on a blog. Howevahh, and I know this is maudlin… I never met him, but had a couple of late-night chats on here about music and Celtic – the only poster truly missed is pablophanque and others who have passed. May they RIP.

And as it should be. I hear Ledley’s maybe back on Wednesday, and I’d start with Charlie at LB.

Gallagher – too right – good case in point. Ed was one of a handful who, by accident of birth, grew up supporting the wrong team, but I always liked the fact that he posted on here with reasonable comments, and generally got a fair hearing.

Saw the last time he posted – maybe a couple of months ago – and he received some completely out of order abuse – I remember feeling embarassed reading some of it – t’was a poor show.

Sorry to interject. A Tim would last 5 minutes on the likes of FF and RM but I would hope that is what separates us from them mate.

  9. Edward Ursus was a fantastic nom de blog. Took me about a year to work out what it meant. Had a wee chuckle when the penny dropped.

The abuse he took was rediculous. We have Greenhuns in our midst though, and they revert to type in the way they treat a decent poster.

Think the guy always knew the core of the site was decent though.

Not heard anything so far, but the msm will not tell us anyway. Past away day trips have resulted in a few arrests in Peterhead and Berwick so I believe they will not find it hard to keep the status quo.

  11. Parkheadcumsalford thanks for the reply I know there are good Rangers supporters out there. My father R.I.P had a good friend and when they purchased a greyhound proceeded to name it RANCEL , CELRAN didnt have the same ring apparently (I digress) my pointis if he werent a good man my father wouldnt have given him much time. We are all equal (or should be) we are entitled to our opinions and entitled to disagree respectfully with opinions with which we disagree. Npw I sound like my Ma

Thank God then Benfica have no one of the calibre of Eusebio, Torres and Simoes either, eh?

The point being made is not to equate Charlie Mulgrew and Kelvin Wilson with Tommy Gemmell and Big Billy; you’d have to be a bit twisted to believe that a sensible person would advance such a straw argument, but to draw parallels with the situation whereby an unexpected loss in a domestic fixture does not predict an inability to compete at a higher European level.

But then, you knew that, did ye not, when you were making your cheap point?

I don’t even need to go back forty years in the past, not one of the current squad in their current preferred positions would have got into the squad of 9 years ago

Thank you for your expert assessment on the current Benfica Squad, I cannot compare their current players with their players of yesteryear as I am not in the habit of watching them live on a weekly basis.

What I can comment on is my opiniion of the current Celtic squad and the fact that on recent league form yesterday’s result was neither unexpected or surprising
