Where to now for Celtic

1509

How well do we handle succession?  Mostly very well.  Back in the 90s Celtic stumbled from one manager to another, picking up whoever was available and prepared to pick up the inevitable poisoned chalice, without any perceivable strategy.

Wim Jansen came from nowhere, or Japan, to be geographically accurate, and was a success, but despite a legendary respect for Fergus McCann, this appointment looked like a stab in the dark.  After Wim left, we had the seminal reign of John Barnes.  Millions were spent, and wasted, before King Kenny held fort for the final few months of season 1999-2000.

The changes introduced by Martin O’Neill are still being felt.  We had been rubbish for decades in Europe, hadn’t knocked out a team from the ‘big five leagues’ since Leeds United in 1970.  We were conditioned to expect and accept defeat, but after Martin, the world would never be the same again.

Martin’s strategy was not without its flaws, for a start, it wasn’t sustainable.  Celtic lost millions every season, despite competing in Champions League football for the first time, and the momentous matter………. Seville.

Gordon Strachan came with a remit to change the problems the club faced immediately before his arrival – bring spending down to meet income, win the league and make progress in the Champions League.  Despite starting with one of the worst weeks in the clubs history, Gordon delivered.

There was a problem, though.  A disconnect opened up that first week when Artmedia smacked five goals past David Marshall, which was never fully resolved.  When we went back into the market, fixing this disconnect was high on the agenda.  Who better than a popular former player who ‘invented’ the Celtic huddle.

Tony Mowbray ticked the boxes which Gordon Strachan showed little appetite for but he was miles off plan for Celtic.  The first week in the job he asked to sign Marc-Antoine Fortune for close to £4m.  I’m sure the proposition was a bolt out of the blue to the club.  Expensive 28-year-old strikers with a low- scoring record was not on strategy.  Having appointed Mowbray, the club had little choice but to back his maiden request, but I bet there was a raft of people at Lennoxtown who knew how this chapter in our story would end.

Neil Lennon was working as a coach at Celtic during the Mowbray era.  He was close to the scouts, sports science people, fitness experts and chief executive.  In other words, he was on plan.  After the John Barnes ‘tried and tested rookie manager’ strategy, I didn’t want Neil, or any other debutant, but he was intelligent, tactically aware and experienced inside the Celtic system.  Within no time, Neil was making headlines as a Champions League manager.  The shine will quite rightly never fade from Martin’s halo, but I could make a case that Neil Lennon has been our best manager since the guy from Burnbank.

Notice the pattern?

We have a habit of appointing a manager to address the perceived deficiencies of the previous incumbent.  Right now, the need for someone to connect with fans will be less pronounced than it was when Gordon Strachan left, the need for someone to work within budget is fundamental, but will not stress anyone.

Neil’s most glaring faults are a whole lot less glaring than any of his predecessors.  This time, we should be looking for someone just like the previous guy:

A student of the game, who understands the tactical trends in the world game.
Intelligent.
On plan with club scouts, nutritionists, sports scientists, coaches, player trading policy and budget.

Susan Boyle just parachuted into the running at 10-1, with Jedward slightly further out at 12-1. Their football knowledge is slightly less, but they are prepared to work for below the living wage…..between them.

However, Subo has told us she has no concerns about losing her best players every season as she understands the need to bank money rather than risk £7-10M on CL qualification worth £25M. She respects the lack of faith the PLC board will have in her.

However, the negotiations are getting heated, as she has asked that the personal information of her family members who attend Celtic Park as guests are not released to Stasi Scotia.

John Collins moves out to 7-1, after a telecon with PL. On asking about the rumours of player management and budget, JC was told that he must be a rag-reading hun and not a true Celtic Supporter if he asks these questions. A true Tim should shut up and enjoy the moment.

Owen Coyle moves in to 4-1. He heard the rumours over the past 12 months, so had his phone on standby and his diary clear at 5pm on 23rd May, so that he could renew his nephew’s season ticket and make himself available for the job at the same time. However, he was scuppered by the leak of the news to the public the day before SB renewal deadline, which means the hot favourite is now Sergio Lippi, who was first on the phone to the Budget Football Manager Gravy Train Hotline, and came in with the best price. Below the Living Wage.

Sergio has already been discussing with friends his disgust at Georgios Sammaras for leaving Celtic just because they wanted him to take a 50% wage cut. Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper and Joe Ledley are also ear-marked by Lippi as players who will never return to Celtic Park on his watch – not since they clearly (thanks to unattributed statements from somewhere in the mediasphere) did not want to stay at Celtic Park.

He has, however, been very specific in pointing out that the Celtic No1, Fraser Forster, should be England No1 and is considered to be in the price range of £20M – more of a Gran Tourismo than a Gran Muralia. He also stresses that, if he doesn’t like the look of a central defender, then simples. That central defender must go. But for the correct price.

Peter Houstoun waits silently in the sidelines for Lippi to fall at the first hurdle, and is SportSaturdayWeb’s favourite choice at a tasty 3-1. Get your money on him. But not on Celtic for CL qualification. A tasty double available there at 10-1.

All joking aside, KC strikes me as someone who would make a good manager.

Reminds me of a story I heard about NL, and why MON signed him. It was his ability to read a game of football. Sweeping from the centre in front of the defence, he had full awareness of gameplans in front of him, strengths, weaknesses etc. This is why he was played there.

Watching him at CP I wasn’t so aware (obviously) of this, but saw someone that was a rock for Celtic, helping the defence, then helping change the game direction. Always there, running endlessly all over the park, breaking up attacks towards the Celtic end and turning them around.

A great player, and one who I think was under-appreciated, particularly when there were other great characters in the team: MON, Chris, Henke, Tommo, Johan etc etc.

So I suppose this is my post of thanks to Lenny.

I’ve also had the pleasure to meet him a few times.

A true Celtic Legend for me.

HH Lenny. And to your Dad, who fought your corner here on the few occasions there was a poor game and result.

You will be sorely, sorely missed.

  28. Thank you NFL for your time as a player & manager of our football club. How you and your family put up with all the hate directed at you and yours was more than most men could put up with. Please accept my apology for some of my country men. Wherever you go Neil the best wishes of the Celtic support go with you.

    From the Scotsman:

“It’s fair to say the Celtic job no longer has the prestige it once had. I think Neil may feel that he has achieved all he possibly can in Scotland and has now hit the glass ceiling. It’s time to move on.”

    Davie Provan

What does Provan mean by that statement?? A***hole

  29. There’s a bloody lot of things to thank Lenny for.

But of course, one of the highlights for me in my life of following Celtic, is without doubt the Barca game !

Last year’s CL campaign was outstanding, beyond our dreams given all the messages we keep hearing about how we are so restricted.

Just think if where we might go next year or the year after if we’d kept VW, GS, and weren’t waiting on offers for FF and VVD.

I only see massive success based on that, and surely affordable in wages based on the contract discussions. We’d also be in a better position to get ourselves into this hallowed better league somewhere else we crave.

But instead, the truth is, the guaranteed buck has been taken by selling/ moving players on, taking players and getting rid of them for nothing. We’re being transformed into some kind of transfer speciality club.

Is this the Celtic Way? No ambiition, just bank the money?

  30. Fess19,

I don’t think Provan is so far wide off the mark there. We have put a glass ceiling on the club in the last 7-8 years. There is an argument that it’s wise financially, and I accept that. But I think it’s wrong that we didn’t gamble by keeping certain players and building on what we had.

Lenny had to leave, as a Celtic mhan. Having your team ripped up at the end of every season just after you’ve got them playing the way you want. There’s only one fall guy when it goes wrong middle of the season. And the Celtic Board, who to be frank, I now hold in utter contempt for countless reasons, know that well.

Even despite what he achieved, he has been criticised by some here, and what makes me laugh (ironically) is that some of those doing that complaining are always the first to do the board thing: “I love Celtic you hate the board that’s your problem keep politics out of Celtic i always renew no matter what, you’re a hun if you complain let’s just all spend a day’s discussion on how good the spreadsheet is” brigade.

  31. Anyway,

It’s been a hectic week for me, but from what I’ve been able to read on CQN tonight, it seems unanimous – we all wanted Lenny to stay, barr a few.

I find myself thinking back of the managers I’ve known. I’m only old enough to remember Jock managing Scotland (and remember watching the Wales game aged 13).

Cesar, TB, Wim, MON, GS and Lenny.

That’s a fine group of football men there. And Lenny has arguabley done the best out of all of them, not just because of this restriction on player budgets.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5-wkcTyFNs

  32. FFM

Maybe my hearts ruling my head but I think being ” Manager of Glasgow Celtic” is a prestigious position even with the monetary restrictions.

Agree as you say about Lenny’s team being ripped apart every year must be heartbreaking trying to build every year and if it goes wrong you know who the loser will be.

Loved NFL as a player, had a tremendous engine and reading of the game but not everyone could see (or wanted to see) these points. I always told Sevco fans they hated him because he was “always in your face” during games and was always 100% for love of Celtic. That’s without religion & place of birth.

  33. BRTH:

I read your response to Awe-naw (and unnamed others) with interest.

You wrote: ”The very existence of the PLC structure dictates that the board, by law, has a duty to the shareholders before any duty to the fan or their aspirations.”

Neither should it go against the ethos or the collective ambitions of its core customers. It should not try to sanitise the culture that binds the support (customers). Not even if it does have an alternative means of recouping lost revenues from an alternative source. The board is the brain of the club and is both temporary and fallible. The support is the sacrosanct soul of the club, it is not temporary but it is when broken down to individuals, fallible.

To my mind it flies in the face of our history and decency that we have employees at our club who are being paid less than the living wage whilst at the same time we have employees at the club receiving six figure sum bonuses which – to my mind – are partly awarded because we do have so many employees of Celtic not being paid a living wage.

Now I’m writing this from a layman supporters perspective, not as a lawyer, or a businessman nor a hater of man nor beast. (beast being and entity not flesh). I’m writing it from a perspective of a football supporter of a club who rose from the graves of poverty and who in my eyes should never a day go by that they should not be reminded of it. I’m writing this as a supporter who has listened to all the debate and arguments with regards to a statue being erected somewhere in Glasgow in memory of those who perished in ‘An Gorta Mor’. After 125 years, our club which was conceived to alleviate the suffering of those who survived the ‘An Gorta Mor’ and made it to Glasgow alive, albeit in rags and destitution, after 125 years I’m a wee bit at a loss as to why our club has not erected a commemorative statue to all those unfortunates on whose bones our club was built. A statue not to glory the club but a statue to remind every single person who ever walks up the Celtic Way of the horrors that people suffered in the search for a little bit of food and dignity and who happened to be of a certain demographic who for whatever reason found themselves in the east end of Glasgow and not Canada, Australia, America, or a bag of bones tossed over the side of a coffin ship.

If not a statue then – to my mind – the stadium should be dedicated, if not named – in eternal humility to those who suffered and those who died.

Celtic in its infancy was never capable of feeding the vast numbers of the starving and to their credit others helped. In amongst those others were individuals who offered food, though before handing out their begrudged sustenance they levied the most selfish tariff of the recipients; they stripped away the last shreds of dignity that the unfortunates had by demanding they denounce their religious faith. I can’t ever begin to imagine the turmoil those poor souls fought within, before abject acquiesce as opposed grace or gratitude, homaged the tainted soup.

I would never dare denounce their plight. I cannot say the same for some of their latter day sons and daughters with big girths but naked of dignity and humility who have no need but still insist on taking the soup.

There is so much more I could add to this subject but I’m going leave it there because I’ll go off on a mass of tangents.

You wrote: ”The very existence of the PLC structure dictates that the board, by law, has a duty to the shareholders before any duty to the fan or their aspirations.”

As regards Resolution 12, if you look back, I’m pretty sure, not certain but pretty sure, that I was the first poster on here to offer Canamalar any support. I was the first to respond to his request for suggestions to his initial draft. Latterly, when it looked like he wasn’t going to get the required number of share holders to back him, I made an open offer to the blog that I would pay for the required number of shares and put them into the name of any person who would promise to back the Resolution 12. Nobody took me up on that offer except that ACGR got in touch and gave me the names of a couple of brokers in London. Unfortunately I was not allowed to buy shares living where I do. I then repeated the offer to ACGR to be informed that Canamalar now had the required numbers to take forward his question.

Are we being played on Res 12

I don’t know but I suspect we are. You say it became plain that Celtic haven’t been sitting on their ‘arse’ for the past two years. Well you may know that, and you may know what was done, but I don’t and without any official word from the club I don’t know if I’ll ever know. But what makes me worthy of such knowledge?

Have Celtic already used Res 12 to force changes within the SFA? I believe so.

Without proof to the contrary I don’t.

I don’t read ever post on here, far from it, but I have not seen Morrisey subjected to any abuse.

The parties concerned have never been to any meetings, given up their time, paid their bus fares etc to get into Celtic park or whatever to try and make any semblance of a difference. Yet they criticise from a point of no knowledge, no imput and no effort.

Any chance you could put names to these paries? And if information is with-held from the masses of course individuals are going to agitate. To my mind to agitate is right. You say more than once in your post to Awe-naw that on more than one occasion you don’t believe what the board is actually communicating, so in effect you are calling them liars. Others too don’t believe what the board broadcast and they are confused as to why. They are not privey to the Machiavellianism and therefore, if incensed enough, they respond in the only way they can. That does not make them board haters, it makes them haters of lies. It does not make them cowards either, it means they (the real sincere ones and not the interlopers) it makes them concerned supporters. I have no knowledge who you are refering to in that chapter, but on re-reading it… do you think it is fair for you to castigate in such a general fashion, unless of course you know everything about the posters you are castigating. Which I don’t think you do.

There are lots of issues I have with the board, lots. I don’t repeat them often because I wish the club no harm and see repetition as solace to those who do wish us harm. But the issues are still there and it is because of those issues, and the lies too, that so many Celtic Supporters – today – after decades of investment both financial and emotional now ask themselves is it the right thing to do to continue with the status quo.

One of my pet hates is ‘myths’ being used to injure our club or its supporters. Myths created by bad thinking individuals with nasty intent for our club and all who align with it. I don’t spend a couple of hours researching these myths, I spend days and night and weeks and months reading about all the crap that is thrown at us. And some of the crap does have substance, but I put that to the side and don’t bring it to the blog because I’m not going to do those fuds job for them. Often though I feel there is a large element of the support are nonchalant to the misinformation, subsequently living their lives happily in ignorant bliss, more power to them. However the ones who are concerned I try to help with what I can garner. Getting that knowledge costs me nothing, nothing aside from endless hours of reading bile and vile trying to filter out the truth when I could be playing football with my kids or reading a book that doesn’t make me want to vomit.

Sometimes I feel lonely because so few Celtic Supporters adopt the water of the ducks back when it comes to slights against us. I’m not made that way. Rather than just lash out in frustration I invest the time in reading, and most of the time I don’t lash out, but I certainly have empathy for those that do when they are in the right.

How many times have you heard the Pope was a Nazi insult, not directed at the pope but used as an insidious weapon to cause you and those who share your culture, not your religion, distress? How nasty is that? How many Celtic supporters if you asked them right now what happened to the Centre party and why did they sign the concordat and why was the Pope in the Hitler Youth, how many will answer you with accurate answers? How many times have you heard fellow Celtic Supporters quote John Cornwell’s discredited book – Hitler’s Pope (or the like about how many Irishmen didn’t fight in wars and other such craps), and that’s when I get hurt, because they try and educate me by invoking works not relative to my supporting of Celtic and in doing so they are instead lending credence to the slights that are determined to cause us grief, and maximum grief at that.

They haven’t taken the soup but they’ve swallowed the poison. But I wish they’d taken a few moments of their lives to get the truth before demeaning another with dark beliefs harboured in lazy ignorance.

You said Auldheid was abused on here, again can you put names and examples of abuse? I would say that Auldheid is just about the most respected poster on here, he is overtly pro-board, or that is the way I read him. He says Celtic are pro-active on Res. 12, he might believe that, he might have irrefutable proof that that is the case, but the masses don’t have the same knowledge and no matter how many times Auldheid repeats his mantra – of infinite patience gets immediate results – I’m sorry, I don’t get it. I see people who I believe defrauded the supporters still in office and on track for a very generous pension as reward for their deceits and ne’r a challenge by those most encumbered by the deceit. I have not seen Auldheid abused on here but I have seen him challenged, there is a difference and well you know it.

I saw Winning Captains spit the dummy after I told him Gordon Strachan was not teetotal. Does it mean much, well not much beyond the truth, or are we now being encouraged to accept anything but the truth and poisonous myths as the basis to our going forward?

This is a football blog full of passionate and devoted supporters. They are of religions and none, they work in all sectors and are domiciled all around the globe. To the greater extent all they want to do is talk about our club. Our club is more than a football club and it has a few monkeys’ on it bag. In discussing the issues over the course of a day moods can change, drink can be taken and the two can easily lead to brash exchanges when sincere and committed supporters come at an issue from diametrical directions. I see nothing wrong with brash exchanges as long as they are conducted in pursuit of furthering the ambitions of our club and the truth, whether it comforts you or distress you.

If people are advocating we become economical of truth and compliant and supportive of lies and liars, then this here poster will very soon be silent because I’ll be fecked if I’m going to be silently accommodating and endorsing of official lies.

What makes me so special and deserving of answers as opposed lies, nothing more than I’m no more than a Celtic Supporter, no better, or different, in anyway than all the others, alive or dead.
