Words are easy, so are actions

After yesterday’s discussion on values, what we’re all about and where we’re going, today’s announcement by the Foundation that they will have a badge day at the Dundee United game on 11 May is something that requires us to step forward and do something about.

“Volunteers will be in place at all turnstile areas and supporters will be asked to make a donation of minimum £1 in return for a badge, which illustrates the new Celtic FC Foundation crest.  All monies raised on the day will support our work challenging homelessness in the Glasgow area.”

I’m going to volunteer.  You should too.  It will mean getting to the game a wee bit earlier but it will also mean you can look those values we all preach in the eye.  Words are easy but on this occasion, so are actions.  Let’s do it.

I’ll find out how you volunteer and report back soon.

  1. THE EXILED TIM

    11:02 on

    10 April, 2014

    Very good!

With regards to the Sevco accounts, does this mean we can expect their share value to fall below the price of an Ice Pop?

  2. Snake Plissken on

    Ok Neg anon2

You asked so shall you receive.

Here are some real questions about this union of equals –

    Trident – YES or NO?

Child poverty to increase – YES or NO?

More Foodbanks – YES or NO?

More austerity leading to the dismantling of the welfare state while the rich get richer – YES or NO?

Tory Governments we as a country don’t elect and haven’t elected since 1954/5? YES or no?

Casino Capitalism of the City of London – YES or NO?

Removal of the NHS (which is coming to Scotland in time) YES or NO?

Eventual student top up fees coming to Scotland if the Labour party under Lamont ever get in again? YES or NO?

Privatization of the postal service charging the hell out of people living in the north of the UK (or the highlands) because of petrol duty in an oil rich nation – For or against?

Pensioners choosing between eating and heating in Winter in an oil rich nation – ok with that?

No outrage that the benefits of oil in Scottish waters has been sucked down to London for the London bubble since its discovery?(a new study today is very revealing on that one among other things)

No problem with our fishing industry being used as a bargaining chip with Europe back in the 70’s?

No outrage that a Labour cabinet lied and hid the McCrone report from the Scottish people in the 1970s to stop us wanting self -determination?

No outrage at a rigged 1979 referendum?

More foreign wars? Fancy it do you?

The possibility (a very distinct one) of being taken out of the EU against our wishes in 2017? You ok with that?

Nigel Farage possibly being King maker in 2015? No worries?

If you’re fine with all of the above then you deserve to Be-tory-together and be run from a one -size fits all UK (which it patently doesn’t).

You see for me those things I list are all the reasons why I would vote YES.

If you vote no then do not ever complain ever again about the political situations in the UK if the rest of the population vote with you.

You asked for it and you’ll get it and you’ll know about it into the bargain.

We know where we are going if we vote no – it’s everything I listed above. We don’t with independence but as Margo MacDonald said – When you are dependent on yourself, you try harder, you grow.

There will be no more false measurements, no more blaming of Westminster for our failures, they will be ours but we will be able to look ourselves in the mirror and face up to our realities rather than play the blame game. That must be a good thing because even out of the bad there must come something that is good.

Scotland can go another way with different plans and rebuild our country, our industry our lives. We can think outside the UK box and dare to do what we are told we cannot.

    One final thing –

We are not oppressed but we are abused in this marriage, taken for granted, get all the dirty jobs when they need to be done and we get less back than we put in.

If this is a divorce we are the ones being told you’ll never survive without me, no one would want you because without me you are nothing and YET they want to cling to us.

    Why?

    Vanity-

    Oil

    Trident

    Scottish soldiers in foreign wars

We’re the last bit of the empire

They believe (the Brit nats) if we leave their place on the UN security council and the G8 is under threat so they become even more irrelevant in the world than they are – cue Lord ‘Devolution will kill nationalism stone dead’ Robertson with his beggin bowl in the States – gonny come out against it, gonny, gonny, gonny. Pathetic man. It wasn’t so long ago they were asking Putin (but I digress).

Labour votes – because the Labour party would sacrifice Scotland for the sake of the party and have many times already – google McCrone report/Denis Healy for starters (and there’s plenty more where that came from).

These are the only reasons they want us to remain in the union.

    What a feeling eh?

Vote YES and do yourselves the biggest favour you will ever do.

  5. NatKnow - Supporting Wee Oscar on

With regard to who journalists, commentators etc. support, I am of the opinion that they should simply be clear about their allegiance. I have no problem with people in the media supporting the deid team or any other team. This is a classic case where a lack of openness and transparency leads to a lot of cynical view and mistrust from the general public. The episode when Young and Traynor were having a go at each other live on-air about who was the biggest hun was hilarious – but also telling. They gave each other away of course – not that anyone thinks they are supporters of anything other than the deid club. But if we already knew that then it would never have been a big deal. What are they afraid of? Ex-players allegiance is worn on their sleeve without any problem. I think we need a campaign to have them outed. Could someone phone Patrick Harvey…?

Super salary takes an £800k chunk out of the £17m wage bill. I know he doesn’t do adding up and dividing and such like but Super Suppers wages would pat half the monthly wage bill. Do you really need a corpulent miscreant to shift the season tickets?

The purchase of assets at £5.5m now valued at current use £41m is eye watering when you consider they paid a large percentage of that fee for catering from the liquidators. Current use value versus top end 60 odd . Hmm.

How much are Easdale and Laxey prepared to loan to keep the ship above water to make up the gap? Mind you they get a share in assets as above if they own it?

Actually sale and lease back by them , even as a front, is not a bad idea. Rangers may be back in the top league Ally permitting in little over a year but they will be a shell.

  13. Snake,

A lot of the things on your list would be reality in Scotland too. You seem to have a mentality that says if we go it alone others will say fight the foreign wars to help defend you. Won’t we habpve to take part too or will someone else do the dirty work for us? If we want to be part of NATO that means we need to be a full part of NATO?

And tell me as independent country can we really have it all? Free education to uni level, no child poverty, no food banks, council tax frozen reduced rates for businesses???metc etc etc. it’s all unaffordable and contradictory unless we all pay a massive increase in income tax. Is that what we are voting for or are we just going to be like the Huns and spend what we can’t afford till it all goes bust?

You say casino. Apical ism from London??? Err wasn’t it two of the biggest scottish banks that went bust????

I do believe a break up does threaten England’s place at G8 but it also means we lose that influence too.

Oh and you have forgotten being dependent on the uk for currency, Bank of England, monarchy blah blah blah. And there is no guarantee on EU membership for Scotland which if agreed would come at a massive cost. So I think your eu referendum point is moot.,

Nigel Farage is the best thing to happen to England in an age. He is splitting the right wing Tory vote. That makes it less Likely we will be I inundated with Tory govts particularly if labour can get their act together. In any case devolution means that we can fight back against Tory nonsense if we have to.

And what about emotional arguments for staying together. I have a lot more in common with many people in England than I do here in Scotland. What about the sectarian Scotland I live in now where the scottish parliament passed the OB act, where vast swathes of our institutions are institutionally racist agains Catholics and Irish? How about the scottish govt losing statistics? What about being a small catholic minority in an institutionally racist country, where the media are controlled?

So you see I can’t rant too.

I do not trust Scotland and it’s tendencies. We have seen how that plays out even without independence and you want to make it worse??

We will never change one another’s mind but all this freedom stuff is just cringeworthy.

I’m pleased to see a rational and even tempered debate on the issues instead of the invective of recent weeks.

Snake has put forward several good “yes” arguments which the better together bhoys haven’t answered, IMO.

NegAnon, you seem to define yourself solely on the basis of your religious upbringing. Religion is important to some folk, and fair enough for them but I think more folk class themselves according to other criteria such as social class, race, sexuality etc.

I am more confident and more trusting than you in the ability and willingness of the Scottish people to make their own decisions on important issues not solely on the basis of religious affiliation. You wish to differ, as is your right.

Btw, are you joining the bhoys on 10th? If so, I’d like to meet you. I promise to not debate the referendum. We’ve got a board to sack.
