Write your own headlines as Celtic work below radar

1442

Peter Lawwell told Sky Sports he’ll not be rushed into making an appointment.  Football goes on holiday for the next few weeks as players, managers and (under normal circumstances) CEOs kick back before minds turn to preseason and transfers.  Even if Celtic appoint a manager tomorrow, his plans for next season will progress little in the immediate future, but the task is being addressed with some urgency.

The best insight I can offer is that the bookies and media know Sweet Fanny Ally about what is going on.  Know that when Celtic start to talk to a candidate, the first thing they will insist on is radio silence, so if the aspiring manager is talking to a jouno, chances are he’s not talking to Celtic.  The club will attempt to do as much work below radar as possible, but between now and the day of an appointment, newspapers will splash their latest ‘favourite’ to get the job over their covers in an attempt to get you buy.  You’d be better picking your own candidates and writing your own headlines.

I’m going to wallow a bit in European glory tonight.  All those photos of the Lions back in Lisbon has been inspiring.  What great man, what a great history they’ve given us.

  1. Good grief.

Sky’s wide-boy reporter Andy (surname?), usually the in-their-face sirritant for football personalities just reporting there live from Lisbon on SSN and talked up our Lions big-time!

More than just rhetoric, he ladled on the quality of the ‘fantastic, incredible performance that day, quoting ‘some 39 shots to Inter’s 1’ , reckoning that ‘many neutrals around the world developed a soft spot for Celtic that day’, ’25th of May was the date’.

Mine neither. I guess that’s why they are dreams though…

  3. On the manager front I think SC is in pole position.

Great coach who would take a back seat regarding player acquisitions.

Good fit for the club as it now stands.

Good fit for PL and his “agent” friendly buying strategy.

  4. A pride of Lions.

Brilliant to see all the photos today of the Lions in Lisbon.

A modest group of guys, hard working and multi talented.

Surely their story and that of Celtic Football club is the most romantic , the most heartwarming , the greatest in football history.

A club born out of necessity , to feed the needy becoming the finest team in world football.

Jock Stein carving out a team in McIlvanney’s words ‘ from a Glasgow and district select ‘

    Just poetry.

A club truly like no other , a club whose support were first to travel en masse to Europe. Spreading the word.

A club treated like lepers in their own country.

A club when in adversity is at its most dangerous.

    Celtic for me

Why don’t we all watch the DVD of the 1967 final tomorrow at the exact kick off time – was it 5.30? – and put up CQN live up dates? What be great fun and a great read!

We have no chance tomorrow. Chalmers and Wallace up front???

This is where we will miss Joe McBride.

If we play like we did v Dukla we will be hammered.

On the specifics you are probably correct.

I do however take exception to us moving further away from CL credibility.

Karagandy was bad enough but I fear worse is on its way.

We have a route to group stage qualification — how do we compare in that group?

Crying into your beer over the injustice of the Big 4 leagues is a distraction.

I would suggest that there is an event of hypocrisy in your article.

You want to wallow in past EC glory but you won’t support a strategy that will generate more.

I don’t want to live in the past I want to make plans for the future.

The current Irish Raj / pL combo are not capable of this and need to go.

    =======================================================

    And be replaced by whom?

    Under what corporate structure?

Who will make up the new PLC board? What are their trumping qualities over the current custodians?

What will Celtic PLC’s presentation to the financial market be to explain this sea-change in outlook and governance?

Which market strategy to generate the necessary capital in excess of current yeild will facilitate this great thrust orward?

Interested to know details of your projections that constitute such a sweeping dismissal and ready solution to the current problems you identify…

“European glory comes in many forms.

“Being a selling club will not get us to any of them.”

Ajax have a much better European record than Celtic and they are a selling club.

As I said, the realities of modern football are harsh if you support a club outside the big leagues.

  10. I think we all know that we are all playing a game in making our choice for manager. The MSM will as you say, have every manager under the sun named to sell papers.

The most recent stating that DD wants Moyes,I hope is untrue. This guy has won nothing in football. He has underachieved for 10 years at Everton, and left Man U out of Europe for the 1st time in yonks.I just cannot see the attraction in this guy.His buys at Everton were woeful, and he spent £27 million on Fellaini at Man U.

Yes he would win the SPL.I think most on here could, given our squad, but he does not convince me as a good manager.Only my opinion.

As you rightly state Paul, there is no great need to rush.Football is on holiday.

I think all my posts on this subject would make up a small book by now.

We are missing one thing — a growth agenda.

Cutting the resources available to the football team is the wrong thing to do.

    They have sold at times.

I think they are a trading club — fees re-invested in new younger players.

My thoughts are that we should be looking at a £5mill net spend per season.

2 players coming in from the youths every season.

2 net buys every season at 21 / 24 for significant money.

The last two seasons is a reflection of Celtic’s future at CL level. We will do well occasionally – and doing well is getting to the last 16, quarter-finals at best.

  30. Interesting wee snippet from bbc site re: today’s play off game.

    14:42

It may be the richest game in world football but for QPR, it could prove the most costly if they do win.

Any Football League club that exceeds an £8m loss for the 2013-14 campaign when their accounts are submitted by 1 December this year is subject to a punishment.

QPR’s wage bill for 2012-13 was £68m, so the prospect of them posting losses way above the permitted £8m is not out of the realms of possibility. If they stay down, the punishment would be a transfer embargo, go up and they could be liable to pay Fair Play Tax in January – a fine reportedly as high as £58m.

I agree we didn’t look comfortable in most of the European matches, but we had our moments.

The difference between last season and the previous one is we didn’t get the breaks – something a team like Celtic need at that level.

I think Virgil, Griffiths and Pukki are all good signings. Every transfer is a gamble, although it is hard to see the others who came in last summer doing much for Celtic.

I do see where you are coming from with these points.
