Write your own headlines as Celtic work below radar

1442

Peter Lawwell told Sky Sports he’ll not be rushed into making an appointment.  Football goes on holiday for the next few weeks as players, managers and (under normal circumstances) CEOs kick back before minds turn to preseason and transfers.  Even if Celtic appoint a manager tomorrow, his plans for next season will progress little in the immediate future, but the task is being addressed with some urgency.

The best insight I can offer is that the bookies and media know Sweet Fanny Ally about what is going on.  Know that when Celtic start to talk to a candidate, the first thing they will insist on is radio silence, so if the aspiring manager is talking to a jouno, chances are he’s not talking to Celtic.  The club will attempt to do as much work below radar as possible, but between now and the day of an appointment, newspapers will splash their latest ‘favourite’ to get the job over their covers in an attempt to get you buy.  You’d be better picking your own candidates and writing your own headlines.

I’m going to wallow a bit in European glory tonight.  All those photos of the Lions back in Lisbon has been inspiring.  What great man, what a great history they’ve given us.

Interesting but don’t see PL relinquishing his ‘football’ role. Why not promote the successful John Park to DOF?

It doesn’t mean that voting Yes is right or wrong, but this certainly shows that the “people who hounded out Neil Lennon” are not rabid Yes voters.

Frankly, I think that although we have bigotry in Scotland, it’s not as bad as it used to be, and that the referendum should be decided by more than just that. We should have a wider view of our lives.

Keep Park a chief scout working for the new DoF.

PL is not stupid. He knows that he could take himself out of the immediate firing line by having a DoF and allows him to get more involved with SFA/UEFA and the other steering/opinion forming groups he has joined over the last year or two.

“We should be focusing on moving towards a plan where last 16 of CL is considered the minimum requirement.

    …………….”

No we shouldn’t. That’s an unrealistic expectation of any manager of any team in Scotland, and specifically of Celtic in the current European football economy. We are a pot 4 team so we should benchmark success as finishing third in our CL group and medium term (3 yrs) benchmark success ad becoming a pot 3 team. Given that we have 3 qualifiers, that could be a hard benchmark to find, for the wrong manager (for example, one with no experience in setting up a team for crucial 2leg ties, such as the championship playoffs…billy Davies it is!).

    ============

I agree this is a realistic objective to aim for with the safety net that if we do not get into the CL groups because of a qualifying failure we nevertheless recover in the EL and the squad should be of a standard to have us in Europe after Xmas in the EL.

Stories that our budget is being reduced need to be challenged and if we follow the logic contained in the early morning article about DD being proud of success whilst balancing the books, then given the cost of a squad of such quality, which cannot be stupid millions greater than our current wage bill, and given the return from such achievement then reducing the budget does not tie in with DD’s rationale.

When you also have a) a valuable asset to sell should the objective fail and so rewards are not realised and b) a cushion of a cash reserve as an alternative there is not a better time than now to go for that After Xmas target hopefully via the CL and if it’s in the CL so much better the happiness and the dosh.

If DD is the sharp guy portrayed I would imagine this scenario is one that he has considered or had put to him.

It would be good to know if it has and if rejected the reasons for doing so.

Sitting by pool in Dubai, reading Coyle is favourite for Neil’s old job. Midfield Maestro says no thank you.

25th May is a dry day in Dubai due to religious holiday, nae swally allowed, they obviously don’t celebrate our great victory.

  11. I fear the reason for Neil’s departure is the downsizing of our club.

His best players were sold last year and not replaced adequately.

I have no doubts Fraser, Virgil & potentially even Kris may be away this summer if the money is right.

It must be tiresome and frustrating having your ambitions halted every year .

The point I thought of buying low and selling high was so that we would improve the quality of player in every year .

Appears to be not the case.

I am absolutely certain Owen Coyle will get the job , totally against the wishes of the support and we will plunge into Mowbrayesque type situation again …. ie , moving backwards……..

Hope to God that I’m wrong.

  12. Aulhheid, I posted yesterday that I don’t think our current objective should be one of being in Europe at Christmas.

It should be that we are in the UCL in August. Qualifying should be our prime objective. Do that often enough, and we will grow stronger. Then we can set other objectives.

Last summer, I did not see evidence that we had an August strategy. I think that we are being conservative in waiting to see if we qualify before finalizing our budget.

If we spend our money and don’t qualify, we may very well have a loss on our income statement at the end of the year. But all else being equal, those players will be assets on the park, ready for next season’s qualification.

The minute we don’t qualify, we lose our last ounce of attraction to prospective players.

  13. Want to see great football at Celtic Park next year?.

March on Celtic Park with postcards with the word Yakin written on them.

Shout and bawl outside the stadium for at least an hour.

Then deposit your postcards at the ticket office,as the stadium is empty, preferably near the shredder.

    That should work.

    I think.

The under the radar route could be that, as per report in yesterday’s Herald, we are looking to change the structure of the footballing operation by appointing a Director of Football. At the moment we have a de facto DoF in the PL/John Park combo, but a proper DoF should be an ex player, charged with overseeing the whole football strategy at all levels and covering all departments. He should be the link with the CEO and the board and be allowed to work within defined budgets.

I mentioned on Thursday that a DoF, Head Coach, Asst Head Coach set up might work better than the current set upas it removes non footballing personnel from taking footballing footballing decisions and allows them to concentrate on what they do best.

DoF? could do worse than Davie Hay. Supported Tommy superbly during his management term at CP.

Have to say my views on Celtic and yours tend to be very close,

GCT- FWIW i think Neil left for a few reasons, and yes i have posted with knowledge of players being imposed on Celtic managers, and sold when the manager wants to keep them.I think Neil earned the right to have a better budget to improve the team BEFORE the CLQs,not the 4 week window after qualifying, and you end up panic buying Pukki. If we had qualified and had as bad a campaign as last season, his reputation would be further damaged, with a view to managing in England,he would probably slip off the radar. As i said i think he deserved better money to spend and improve the first team.14 years of bigotry against him and his family obviously takes it’s toll.He will be replaced by a compliant Coyle or Clarke, someone who will accept a Balde or a Pukki without question. If you don’t want to read anything against the Club, just read your Celtic View.

Terrible news. He used to be PP at St Charles in Paisley, my sister in law was his housekeeper at St Charles & then Erskine. My wife is so upset at hearing this. He suffered very badly from diabetes & on a good few occassions was found out cold from his attacks. He was the first person who had diabetes to do all The Munroes, not once but twice. Every Sunday sermon had a link to his passion of mountaineering. God bless Father Jim.

I would say the problem with Park is he has too much influence, particularly with PL. I think he has an eye for good young players we could potentially bring in, but a DoF wouldn’t give him the influence that he currently has.

If he didn’t like it and wanted to move on, thanks and goodbye. IMO we need to remove the footballing decisions from the non footballing staff.

I’d like to go to a track suited DoF, but think in PL we already have one in a sharp suit.

If he were to step back that would be a massive change which may have merit, if

we get the right men in.

The short list for Head Coach remains uninspiring IMHO but it’s only MSM and doesn’t really matter.
