Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

Aw diddums poor wee footballers cant take any public criticism, if RD had said they werent brave enough, then theyre is nothing to report, but ask Rentagob Commons (who is trying to fashion a career after playing) and he’ll give you a soundbite. They are highly paid professionals, even by our standards, so act like professionals.

Too many people looking for a big stick to beat RD with, he should rightly take criticism for Tuesday and has admitted as such, but others, especially on here want the skin off his back.

I actually enjoy the majority of games we play and the way we play, just wish we had a great goalscorer and not a scorer of great goals.

We have made one of the best starts to a season in many years, in terms of results and quality of football. The team were commended for a classic style euro away performance against Qarabag. Unbeaten in 10 competitve games, only two draws.

It is ridiculous to suggest the club needs to back the manager at this stage. I don’t have a problem with players and manager disagreeing, in fact I’m glad it happens. It’s what’s needed to sort things out and learn. They are all big boys with a big mentality. It shouldn’t happen in public but the idea that there has been self harming and will be a breach of trust is a long way wife of the mark.

  6. Tony. Away to Ibrox mate as we want to see our club competing. You don’t. Away and sing the sash

Absolutely correct, anyone who thinks there is a breakdown in relationships spends too much time with their heads buried in newspapers whilst listening to trash talk radio.

Yes,how refreshing it would be to have an owner that was more involved due to a passion for the club or at least his financial return.

Wee Fergus, the archetype football chairman, working on a budget to maximise his and the club’s revenue and success.

An owner / chairman that wants to be successful not already is,obscenely.

We have as a club good standing and respect in the financial world,a platform for success for growth.

It doesn’t have to be a billionaire.

  11. Big VVD on his bike.

Naw, really, pictures on SSN just now on the training bike at Lennoxtown. Interview with Ronny coming up at some point.

  12. LiviBhoy,

Yes, we should have been out of sight at HT at home. I think we got caught in the headlights and weren’t sure what to do, so retreated into our shell.

He had couple of chances away from home and one where Kris Commons should have played him in. Leigh will score goals, but he’s till learning the game.

And I’m sure Peter Lawwell would be a good asset for the club within a philosophy of ambition and growth.

  14. Lets be honest Bhoys we have all had our say but fitba is a simple game.

Get a solid keeper who is a good shot stopper. Check

Get two centre backs at least one who is dominant in the air and at least one with pace.

Get two full backs who can defend.

Get one midfielder who can pass and one that can win the ball. Preferably they can both do both.

Get wingers with pace who can cross a ball.

A striker who is decent in the air and one who is a goal machine. Preferably both.

All talk of systems, formations, modern game players, etc. These are excuses made by Sky pundits to cover for their pals and has spread to fitba chat all over the country.

The game is not difficult. The more fitba is discussed the more complicated it sounds. Keep them out at the back and put them in the net up front. That’s it! It’s simple. 4-4-2 and let the opposition worry about us.

Unless you have a world class striker up front and Messi, Ronaldo or Sanchez supporting you are not going to get a lot from 4-3-2-1 in my opinion unless you go the Chelski route. There are times you maybe play 1 up and 1 a bit deeper in Europe. I get that but get the right players.

    Get defenders that can defend.

Aye but he is good going forward – you can’t complain about losing goals if that is your thoughts on a defender.

Midfielders that either can’t pass or tackle. Pointless, what do they do? If they don’t chip in with 20 goals a season in a 4-3-2-1 or a 4-2-3-1 they are passengers.

Strikers who don’t score? Pointless. Aye but they bring other players into the game? Na no for me. 1 up front and he doesn’t score? You would need two midfielders to get 20+ goals a season.

Malmo was a manager who had us sussed. More importantly our players had an off night. Whether they bottled it weren’t up for it or not is irrelevant but our midfield is too congested and there is a passenger every week. Currently this season it is Johanssen that goes missing for large parts of games. In Scotland we should be 2 strikes on the pitch.

I just can’t hear any argument against 2 strikers. This modern game garbage doesn’t wash with me unless you can buy galaticos. If I am wrong and we win the EL or treble with this formation I will be first to say so and make a donation to Mary’s meals but it’s really amazing how complicated people are making football.

    Defenders – Defend

    Midfielders – pass and tackle

    Wingers – cross ball

    Strikers – score goals

I’ve been banging on about Matej Jelic – Croatian Striker playing for Zilina. 6FT tall striker socring in Europa league. Unlucky to go out to Bilbao

Jakub Paur his midfield team mate.

Both good enough for Celtic IMHO.

I don’t think our Scouts even visit Eastern Europe and by pass it for Israel.

    *******

It’s pathetic. We should be able to pick up good young talent there no bother. We have, what – 7 full time coaches to cover the UK and Europe? That’s hopeless. These guys don’t cost much but could turn our fortunes around. But that wouldn’t fit in with Mr Lawwell’s penny pinching mentality. For a big club our marketing dept is a shambles as well.
