Get ready for Brendan’s reign

650

There was a spring in the step this morning as we look forward to Celtic taking to the field for the first time under Brendan Rodgers against Slovenians, NK Celje.

While the usual caveats apply – we’re unfit and will look it, the manager doesn’t really know the players yet – it will be interesting to see the formation, and how it contrasts to Ronny’s reign. I would also look out for wee clues as to how we will play, like how the keeper distributes the ball, and where the full backs play.

16 years ago Martin O’Neill took his team to the Netherlands and was well beaten, but he returned to Amsterdam a few weeks later, where he ripped up the form book, so don’t get too stressed by what might happen later.

Once in a lifetime opportunity……

There are rare experiences and then there are extremely rare experiences, but the chance to appear in the Celtic team photo is incredibly rare.

Thanks to Malorbhoy, we have a £5-a-ticket raffle to win the chance to appear in your very own team photo, alongside the Celtic players and management at the preseason photocall for 2016-17.

You will then meet treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, who will give you a personal tour of Celtic Park.

Celtic will provide you with a strip, which you will retain, and you will receive your team photograph, framed and signed by the team, on a specially prepared mount.

This is an incredible experience for any Celtic fan.

Your donations go to Celtic FC Foundation, to support their work in Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty. The Foundation deliver often life-changing support and opportunities to children and adults in Scotland, Ireland, the rest of the UK and in many needy areas of the globe.

Buy your ticket at MyDonate here. You can enter as many times as you like, but only donations of £5 or higher will be entered into the raffle.

Many thanks and good luck!

My maternal grandfather-we shared a bedroom till he died when I was 10-was one of the sappers who tunnelled under the German trenches and blew them up.

  4. My grandfather fought and was shot in the shoulder in the Somme, my Granny’s brother was killed in Belguim, I still have more regard for the boys who stayed and fought the British, Even as a 7 & 8 yr old told that to my Grand Dad, he used to laugh thought it was very funny.

Anyhow that is my sole contribution to that debate, was surprised there was little or no comment on here about Ajer, he is not a centre half and had one Efe moment but he looked comfortable & confident on the ball.

I think we might have a player there.

    Apologies Daily Mail haters!

Just read this article on Newsnow and saw Brendan talking up my big pal Ciftci.

Its obviously early days, but it can be strange how new managers can change some players time at clubs.

Maybe sometimes the new boss puts an arm round the shoulder of these guys, although some of us might prefer them to get a foot up the erse or a pair of hands round the throat instead!

Nice to see Izzy getting a wee mention in there as well……could he get back to being what he was prior to Ronny?

Celtic play another friendly, against Sturm Graz, in Austria on Sunday

By JOHN GREECHAN FOR THE SCOTTISH DAILY MAIL

    PUBLISHED: 23:38, 30 June 2016 | UPDATED: 01:33, 1 July 2016

Brendan Rodgers watched his side fight back from two goals down to grab a draw in his first match as Celtic manager.

And, afterwards, the new boss had words of praise for forgotten man Nadir Ciftci, whose contribution sparked the visitors into life in the 2-2 stalemate against NK Celje.

The Turkish forward, who spent the second half of last season on loan to Eskihesirspor, scored his first goal for the Hoops since December last year.

Rodgers, who fielded two different XIs for both halves of his first game in charge of Celtic, said: ‘I thought he was excellent tonight. He has worked very hard in training and has taken on board that the striker needs to be able to press – and work how we want him to play.

‘I need to assess him. I’ve seen a lot of players for the first time but I had seen him as a young player. I remember him at Portsmouth when he was really young, playing against my son who was at Chelsea – and he was a talent then.

‘He was mobile. If we can get that mobility back into his game, he’s got a good idea for football. He has talent. He’s worked very hard and it’s good for him to get the goal.

‘He got in a good position to score. He held the ball up really well, so I thought he was excellent.

‘All the players are working on the physical base. We have a long way to go before we are at the level I want us to be at. But I think all the players are showing a great effort and mentality to work hard, it’s something we are going to need to do.

‘I thought the game was excellent. We are obviously just a week or so into it, so to get the game this early doesn’t normally happen. But I thought our application was very good.

‘The second half was better than the first because it was a quicker game. We pressed much better and showed a good mentality even though it’s a pre-season game.

‘It was really nice to see the boys pulling on the kit for the first time, getting back in the changing room and on to the pitch. As a manager you look to see that relationship you’ve worked on in training in a game.

‘We need to develop our football fitness but there was some positives with the young players who came in. They showed they have the nerve to play.’

Rodgers said he plans to pick two XIs for either half again when his team cross the Austrian border to face Sturm Graz on Sunday, with skipper Scott Brown likely to have recovered from a niggle that forced him to miss the tour opener.

‘Scott had a tightness of his hamstring last Saturday back at Lennoxtown so we just left him out as a precaution,’ he explained. ‘There’s no need to take any risks at this stage. He’s doing some running and should be okay for the weekend.

‘Emilio Izaguirre only joined the squad on Monday so he needs a bit longer but he’ll also be available on Sunday. We’ll probably play two teams again in the next game then change it. It’s stops the risk of injury and the game stopping and starting.

‘About 45 minutes is about where we are at but we’ll build it up because the Champions League qualifiers come around quickly.’

Awakened by the sun streaming through the window in a sunny Valencia, its been pretty dull for the week so far so happy to see the sun on display.

Could not get a feed of the game last night so just going by reports seems it went ok, at this stage if Brendan is happy then so am I and in particular if he starts to get a shift out of the long list of non triers from last season he’ll have my full support.

I’ll be back home in time for the first league game and really looking forward to it. Tonight I’ll find a bar to watch the Euros and get into that eating after 9pm Spanish thing, for a bhoy from ML2 thats a challenge I can assure you…………:-) Maybe 6 pints watching the footy and a kebab……..

  10. I watched the Celtic game last night – more entertaining than the Portugal-Poland match. Nice to see lots of the young players get a run out along with Ajer who we knew nothing about, and returning players like Ciftci.

As BR stated in the Daily Mail “It was really nice to see the boys pulling on the kit for the first time…”

I am happy with that. We all have our favourites and villains in the team but it is the manager who decides. Looking forward to all the friendly matches we have lined up to see how Brendan shapes his team

  16. Yesterday there was talk of Celtic v Wolsburg in a friendly on Saturday 16 July. Nothing yet in the official site’s fixture list.

It would surely be a season ticket game though, as the Leicester game is organised externally and not on season ticket.

JJ has barely mentioned his beloved team in about ten days. He has gone political on his audience.

Strangely, when he “stuck tae the fitba”,despite some strong criticism of King-and even Murray-including potentially libellous pieces, his musings were left for all to see.

Our squad is far too big. If SJ doesn’t impress Brendan very quickly-and he watched reruns of all of last season-he will be one of many to leave.

I’m heartened by reports that virtually the first question Brendan asked the squad was

“Do some of you just which team you were playing for last season?”

  21. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

The loss of form of a number of our players under Ronny`s ” tutelage ” was just one of a number of reasons I completely lost faith in his ever being able to turn things round .

I hope Brendan looks back a fair ways before he decides to jettison some of our hitherto ” stars.”

Always a good idea to retain a few ” faithers ‘ in the squad.

I`m thinking Kris in particular . Charlie perhaps.

In any case , I`m confident that Brendan has the ability to see beyond the views of the steamie.

    Entertaining preseason match.

    Ist half:

Ajer is not a CB (yet?) but looked to be calm, has a good touch and read the game well for an 18 year old.

Christie, Allan and Griffiths tried but never really got going.

Forrest, Bitton and Johansen look like they will be heading out the door soon. Bitton slows everything down and Forrest and Johansen don’t contribute much.

    The others did fine.

    2nd half:

Everyone played with swagger and speed. Very impressed with all the young guys. They are all good footballers who know how to use the ball.

Special mentions to Armstrong and Rogic who both looked a class above.

Ciftci also played very well. The ball stuck to him and he brought others into play and took his goal very well. Maybe he will make the break through this season.
