I may have told you this before, apologies if I’m repeating myself. Around 20 years ago, in a TV studio minutes after a Rangers victory, a former captain, Terry Butcher (what ever happened to him?), told the audience, “David Murray will not stop until he’s won two European Cups and 10 in a row.”
Use of the personal term “he”, not the club name, struck me. Murray was personally invested in this matter. Such a burning desire did not make David Murray a bad person, he owned the dominant club in Glasgow, but the team he was dominating had all that glorious history. If the boot was on the other foot, you’d want the same. I would.
Perhaps if Jock Stein had stayed at Hibs, Celtic would have stayed in mediocrity, David Murray would have had a more affordable dream and the liquidation of his club would not have been necessary.
You know it’s true…….
On Tuesday’s STV report that Hearts manager, John McGlynn, said:
“How many fans would think they could win the league if Celtic weren’t in it at this stage? All [clubs’] fans would.
“That would cause great excitement and I think it would bring fans back to the game, at the lower clubs.
“If you look at the rest of us outside Rangers and Celtic, we’d all fill our stadiums if we thought we’d realistically have a chance of winning the league.”
There are screeds written and spoken about our game but the McGlynn Plan is the most productive comment I’ve read all year. Well done to STV for the report, hopefully they will put the same questions to others in the league. This is the most important question for Scottish football right now.
It’s time for these clubs to throw off their downtrodden ways and genuinely compete for the Scottish title.

Mate I was trying to highlight how fast the news was spreading and how each news outlet is inspired to unique and evocative journalism. I think each of those that I quoted came from Press Association Ltd.
It was sort of tongue in cheek stuff.
So there is not really any point in telling you what the Benbecula Times has to say on the subject. Too many Tims on the books there for it to be impartial anyway.

I just didn’t want you bhoys out in the colonies thinking that the demise of the huns was front page news in all the wee newsagents the length and breadth of Scotland.
I know how susceptible you are to romanticise what it’s like back here.
Reposting this from previous as it puts focus on the Scottish Government’s lack of action in the past and also mentions the establishment of an independent expert group headed by a Dr Morrow to advise on measures to eradicate sectarianism.

The Scottish Government has been blasted by a football chairman over its attempts to tackle sectarianism.
Turnbull Hutton of Raith Rovers questioned whether progress has been made since infamous clashes between the Rangers and Celtic managers during an Old Firm game in March sparked a nationwide debate.
The Fife club became embroiled when director Eric Drysdale’s involvement in an SFA tribunal charged with imposing sanctions on Rangers was revealed.
Police were called in when Rovers received chilling threats, including one to burn down its Stark’s Park home.
Journalist Alex Thomson’s recent Channel 4 blog backed claims some Rangers fans resorted to intimidation in the wake of the club’s demise.
A number of other journalists also told of similar threats as a result.
Mr Hutton, who emerged as a supporters’ hero when he criticised the SFA and SPL’s attempts to deal with the Rangers newco during the summer, said it backs his belief the Scottish Government has shown a general lack of leadership in dealing with the sort of intimidation his club was subjected to.
He said yesterday: ”This is not a Raith Rovers issue.
”Life goes on in Kirkcaldy whatever division Rangers are in and we get on with it.
”But I find it strange that we’ve gone from a view that we’re the greatest little country in the world to a position where we’re going to be voting for independence two years down the line and we’re still talking about sectarianism.
”Jack McConnell (former First Minister) at least made an attempt to address an issue that he saw as demeaning for Scotland and there were two or three conferences where church leaders and politicians spoke about the issue.
”Alex Salmond comes along and does nothing before Neil Lennon and Ally McCoist have a handbags session and suddenly Salmond’s in there holding a conference involving police, politicians, football clubs, church leaders,politicians, TV people — the lot.
”What’s happened to that?
”But it’s clearly far more wide-ranging than just football clubs and something has to be done about it.”
The risk to Stark’s Park itself was raised by Fife Police, who acted on information from Strathclyde Police — a threat Hutton described as ”credible and factual”.
But asked if more needs to be done to curtail the kind of behaviour that arose a few months ago, Mr Hutton added: ”I don’t think Alex Thomson’s blog leaves a lot of follow-up questions, other than for the West of Scotland and for Strathclyde Police.
”But if Alex Thomson’s blog is in any way accurate, all of this is happening in the greatest little country in the world two years away from an independence vote and nobody is saying a thing.
”I have to ask where the leadership is in Holyrood on this issue?”’
A Scottish Government spokesperson highlighted a number of key initiatives ministers feel will make a difference.
”The Scottish Government have made clear that bigotry and hatred will not be tolerated and we are taking forward a wide range of action to eradicate sectarianism once and for all in Scotland.
”Clearly, it cannot be tackled overnight but strong progress is being made.
”We’ve brought in new legislation to give police and prosecutors additional tools in their armoury to punish those who peddle sectarian hatred, including a new offence of threatening communications.
”This is being backed by £9 million over the next three years to help organisations take forward wider work to tackle sectarianism because we’ve always said tackling bigotry isn’t just about legislation or just about football. And only last month, we appointed a new independent expert group to help advise on current and future policies to eradicate sectarianism in Scotland, chaired by Dr Duncan Morrow.”
No matter how invisible the coverage of the death of the huns and their dying spawn in the msm, the hurt of their supporters does not go away.

When Salmond called a Govt-summit after the ‘shame-game’…that was an open goal for the Celtic board to drag all of this – Anti/Celtic/Irish/Catholic-Corruption onto the World Stage. imo.
Celtic should have held a press conference and told the world that – “Under NOOOO circumstances will Celtic Football Club be attending ANY Govt-Summit on the basis of, having three players booked !!!” “End Of !!!”
That would have dragged this – Scandal of a country onto the world stage and, all it’s dirty little secrets would have been laid bare. imo
I’d like someone official from Celtic to nail the ‘old firm’ line that wee Chick and others are spouting. In every post match interview with a Celt on Tuesday he asked if they’d want an ‘old firm’ game in the next round.
This isn’t just semantics. There are a few offerings but Professor Tom Devine gives the best researched answer to where this expression came from. At the turn of the century the Boards of Celtic and Rangers (deceased) were in unison in their protracted fight with powerhouse Queen’s Park about professionalism. The ‘old firm argument’ was an expression used in the media about professionalism and in the end was won by Celtic and Rangers (deceased) and football turned professional.
Corporate structures were in place, professionalism surged ahead and the devoutly amateur Queen’s Park sadly faded away from prominence.
The term does not refer to the colours or badge of the Rangers strip, the stadium or the fans. It refers to the corporate, professional structure that was born, in tandem with Celtic, that went on to revolutionise football as a professional sport.
One of those companies died. You could almost say that Queen’s Park actually won half the battle, in the end. But the ‘Old Firm’ as they became, was not a union of the beautiful game in Glasgow but a union of structure, now torn asunder. A marriage of convenience and Celtic are a widower. Some may grieve, but the funeral was yesterday and we have closure.
I have often felt the campaign not to use the term was a futile one. Not that I disagreed with the sentiment that we did not like the permanent association, but until now the actual meaning of the term could not have been questioned or a cogent argument against it been offered other than ‘we don’t like it’. But it can now. One half of the ‘Old Firm’ arguers is dead. We aren’t. No one else can fill that place in history. The Rangers may or may not eventually be pretenders to a slot as one half of the prominent Glasgow Derby. But then again they may be our Tranmere, our Meadowbank Thistle, our Walsall. But whether the dinosaurs like wee Chick like it or not the ‘Old Firm’ died along with Rangers 1872.

Yes – it is an easy sum. All of the Rangers team apart from McCulloch and Wallace came through the youth system or as a free transfer. The total transfer fees were £3.75 million for the two named.
For Inverness, if you take awy the one player on loan, the frree agaent signings and free transfers, and those who came up through the Caley Thistle youth system, you are left with….
…no one.
The combined transfer fees for the 13 Inverness players who played tonight was NIL.
The liquidated Rangers did a bit of damage before they went into the blender, but if I remember correctly their friends such as John Yorkston, Chairman of DAFC said that not getting payment from Rangers for their half of the cup-tie between the clubs was quite all right. There was no problem.
Seems as if the jovial John might not have been 100% according to reports in this week’s Dunfermline Press after 7 directors quit!

Seven directors resigned from the main board amid rumours sweeping the city that the club was in financial difficulty.

My brief foray into football punditry was prompted by the piece on the official Rangers website reporting on the match.
The particular sentence which caught my eye was the first in the piece:-
“RANGERS crashed out of the League Cup as SPL side Inverness exploited their youthful inexperience to record an ultimately comfortable victory at Ibrox.”
I know that one of the mantras chanted by the fans of Rangers this season is that their team has been disembowelled by the effects of administration, sale of assets, players leaving under TUPE etc.
Here too the official Rangers site attributes the outcome to “youthful inexperience”.
I added up the ages of the players who made it on to the field for each time.
Rangers – 14 players – total age 355 years – AVERAGE AGE 25.3
Inverness CT – 13 players – total age 315 years – AVERAGE AGE 24.2
I looked too at the Celtic team from last night.
Celtic – 14 players – total age 344 years – AVERAGE AGE 24.5
Maybe Rangers suffered from “youthful inexperience” (and two of their players were teenagers as opposed to one from Inverness) but looking at the figures, their SPL opponent were even more inexperienced.
Mind you, one cannot help but feel sympathy for an attempt to excuse what must be a demoralising defeat, after the high hopes which followed on from the previous round’s win over Motherwell, and the weekend victory at Clyde.
