5 point lead gave false comfort

247

A two-goal win for Hearts on Saturday lunchtime would be enough to move them into second in the table.  It would be reassuring to have an early opportunity to restore our five-point lead at the top of the table.  Another possibility is that Newco win at Tynecastle to go top, for a few hours at least.

Irrespective of how well our season has started, defeat in Paisley last time out suggests that five-point lead gave us some false comfort.  If they get through Saturday intact, Newco have the comfort of knowing that within the first seven games, they have already played away against four of the other five clubs in the top half of the table.  They have significantly fewer challenging periods ahead.

We were in a far worse situation this time last year, when we comforted ourselves with the knowledge that we had almost certainly come through our most difficult period.  With many eyes on the Champions League game on Wednesday, we first need to get the job done against Motherwell.

Just to add to my earlier post it’s times like these where we think of our own mothers.

If they’re still with you give her a hug if not cherish her memory.

Equal pay — Dagenham in 1968.

    Same but different — I know / I know.

At the time few if any women worked on the main line.

They were concentrated in the shed next door to the Ford sub assembly lines supplying modules / complex commodities such as seats.

Straight economics has the main line has the bigger value add therefore the bigger wages. But that is bad for morale when all the workers are employed by the same company.

However uber rationality / Big Auto economics means that seats will always get paid less than the main line — less value add per hour worked.

Old school numbers — 10 to 15 years old

The main assembly line takes $10K kit of parts and turns them into a $20K ex works vehicle.

Assembly labour is in the region of $600 to $800 depending on location and plant technology / efficiency.

Average numbers — 80 cars per worker pa = $800K gross value add pa.

They are supporting the retail product that can be sold to the public.

Sub assembly lines don’t have that level of total value add.

They are only producing sub assemblies that only have a lower wholesale value

They only then have local value add related to the component they are producing.

Commodity cost not linked to the final retail revenue.

Plus back in the day before equal pay women as cheaper labour was the norm — the pin money argument was much in vogue. Consequently if they could get away with it — women were corralled into certain roles and paid less. Dag 67 if you like.

So you have two drivers regarding lower pay.

Specific roles in less value add jobs with lower pay rates.

Plus little or no access to the higher value add roles on the line.

The Dagenham women won the battle but lost the war.

All OEM roles in the plant were paid the same basic and after time similar bonuses.

Being Ford employees they were then paid the same basic as the main assembly line workers.

The only issue was that over time more work was handed over to the Tier 1 suppliers who paid lower wages. Seats being one of those many modules / complex commodities that were put out to tender with the supply chain which grew as more work was put in play.

At first these roles could be anywhere in the supply chain.

Then came the idea of supplier parks where the seats were made in the shed next door by a Tier 1 supplier paying lower rates than the OEM whose factory / assembly line they were supplying.

Not exactly sure what happened in Dag in the 70’s / 80’s / 90’s — when exactly the seats were given to the supplier base. It might have been off site production or it might have been a new nameplate on the existing Seat block — which really would have been a kick in the fallopian tubes for the women of 68 with lower pay rates on the horizon once again.

On the plus side women can / could get jobs on the main assembly line so at one level long term equality was established.

Until they shut DAP / Dagenham Assembly Plant in 2002.

Dreadfully sad news to hear of Eileen’s passing. Your mum, gran and wife and soulmate has gone and at the moment there is nothing that any of us can say that will make things better. However, time will ease that pain and I pray that you’re all left with happy memories.

  16. Does the old saying of ‘one swallow does not a summer make’ apply to Porteous’ performance for Scotland the other night.

  17. So young Aussie Garang Kuol is heading to Eddie Howe FC eh?

I mentioned his name in a post about 6 months back but I didn’t I rate him as the best prospect Oz has.

The two outstanding prospects are Nestory Irankunda (17) and Aleksander Popovic both at Adelaide FC.

Great for Garang Kuol to reach the EPL tho!

CelticRollerCoaster – peace in all your family’s aching hearts right now.
