93 days of this left, the farming of Patrick Roberts

682

May is not out, the manager is not formally in place yet, but there’s an early bit of transfer rumblings underway as Celtic begin the process of building a squad for an attack on The Nine.

In response to speculation linking Celtic to one of his players, Motherwell chief exec, Alan Burrows, wrote on Twitter, “figures in papers are often educated stabs and not a true reflection on either what one/any club might be prepared to pay or the other might be prepared to accept.”

In short, any inquiry from Celtic for David Turnbull is at an early stage and conversations will not be around the figures reported.

We have 93 days like this until the transfer window closes….

Like you, I enjoyed watching Patrick Roberts.  He is a gifted player and good professional.  His could have been a permanent signing for Celtic but Pep Guardiola had other ideas.  Now he has signed a new contract, keeping him at at Manchester City for another three years, a club he will almost certainly never play competitively for, while simultaneously agreeing to a one year loan at newly promoted Norwich.

It is hard to escape agricultural metaphors when watching what the tier one clubs in England do with young talent.  They are a crop to hoard and sell, not to consume.  City paid Fulham £12m for Patrick four years ago.  His new contract will be worth several millions per year, and when his value is right, they will sell him.  This is a business model, independent of first team considerations.

A season in the English Premier League could be enough to raise a fee in excess of £20m, but there is a risk going to Norwich.  Patrick’s talents are most valuable unlocking packed defences.  Players of craft are less valued the further down the league you go, where robustness and counter-attacking football has become mandatory.

He would contribute his share in that Manchester City squad, or at Celtic, but his bit-part season at relegated Girona is a portent of what could lie ahead for him in Norwich.  At least he’ll be able to catch the tunes on North Norfolk Digital.

On the first point you’ll find I have stated the overall picure should be taken into account which includes the stats and opinions of the footballing department.

Any issue with that? I did list some attributes that should be taken into consideration last page

Second point poor wording I will attribute to having only eaten coffee and cider today ;)

Meat cravings have begun rest assured.

Hope you’re well partner. Btw we are having a sweep on the net spend this summer. Wanna have a bash .

4.4 million in profit was my guess.

To suggest there is no input from the manager is plain daft, but there are no Celtic managers sat with a calculator working out transfer fees, and wages.

Neil accepted the job because he understands and accepts ‘ the transfer strategy ‘ that is working perfectly well by treble treble standards, and indeed in the modern Celtic era.

    You don’t, accept it, but you ( or I ) don’t matter .

It’s really very simple, and was signed up to by Tommy Burns through Brendan Rodgers.

Fergus McCann was repeatedly referred to by Tommy Burns, as the money man, when asked about players and signings, not all ‘football input’ comes from the playing staff.

    Hi folks

Yes, it’s green & white and looks grand.

    Mahe

A while back you asked was there anything that I didn’t accept…

Probably, in fact yes, but I’d need time to collect my thoughts…

That post was about our alleged failure as a club – in the eyes of some fans.

The remark “allegedly Tory voting directors” was aimed at some fans who seem to think that Celtic have been asleep for 100 years and only appeared as a business in the last 30 years. In that time frame various directors have been pilloried for their politics, lifestyle & other sundry thinks that have njo bearing ont he job they do or did as a director. It was in fact intended to make fun of the alleged “open to all except when we say otherwise” brigade – which still operates today.

    MadMitch

I saw your post and from that cursory glance my thought was that the vagaries of the market & the methods we chose to make inroads into it doesn’t really change the fact that the business model we have now is a “success” with all the limitations that apply in using that word.

Off for dinner here so I’ll no doubt get back in the saddle tomorrow.

    HH to all.

  7. Had we taken the 9 million for Boyata there would have been hysterics here, the Board knew they were kissing goodbye to 9 million but they were prepared to take the hit to try and reach the Champions League Group Stage & to win trophies. Obviously Boyata’s initial strop didn’t help against AEK but we did win the Treble.

Now the issue is the Board cost us 9 million.

AS ever it is a balancing act, the Board moved to tie down most of our top talent this year to avoid another Boyata situation but even those moves can backfire. How many times have we seen a player suddenly lose form once he has signed an extended deal. We will have winners & losers, it is the nature of the Business ,

  8. Mahe

“Btw we are having a sweep on the net spend this summer. Wanna have a bash .

4.4 million in profit was my guess”

If I knew what the parameters were I’d have a bash but I pay much less attention to the Balance Sheet than the Critics do. I have a long standing challenge to those who assert that Celtic FC is being used as a “cash cow” to show me, where, when and how much is being “taken out” or stolen from the club by the Suits? So far, apart from PL’s salary and rumours of a thermal device in his driveway, no explanation has been offered and no amount ventured.

CRC did patiently try to explain to me how loose accounting procedures were and how easy it would be to hide money going out. And because he is qualified in that area, and the dismal science gives me a sore heid, I fully believe him. However, just because money being stolen can be hidden, is not proof that it is and CRC, nor any other pundit, would volunteer a guess, to me as to what amount of and how money is being stolen.

For those reasons, I don’t know how you would be able to award a winner in your competition. How would you know that your figures are accurate if you don’t believe the Board’s own figures as accurate.

My guess is we will always make a profit on transfers because inflated markets elsewhere will

pay more, for our players, than we will for theirs. But we will lose out on a portion of this profit by having to pay players more, to motivate them for their reluctance to come here, than clubs in Spain and Italy and Switzerland will.

Tell me what your parameter figures are for the past 10 years for your com and I’ll be happy to take an uninformed guess, based on these, but it really isn’t an area of strength, for me. I’m better on Grand National winners.

I would not get too worried about it.

TET is a great bloke but there has always been beefs and bitchiness between blogs.

The very entertaining Huddleboard and e-Tims have had jibes at CQN as the conservative, Board-favouring side of the support and a few on here, over the years have thrown out insults at other sites.

In the end, it does not matter a lot. You’ll be at a Celtic match soon jumping and singing with a supporter who is a member of a “rival” blog or none, and it won’t matter to you or him or her.

People are looking for their Tribe and find a place that is congenial. A lot of the people who left CQN have found a spot that suits them better on Sentinel Celts- good luck to them.

Eventually, they will forget that they were once of the CQN Tribe and will feel more comfortable in their new skin and no longer feel the need to have a regular pop.

To their credit, both Mahe and BMCUWP do their best to keep the tone civil and they should be supported as it’s like herding cats sometimes, trying to get 2 Celts to remain agreeable, especially when drink has been taken.

They are also keen for CQNrs to feel comfortable as visitors or regulars, sure, they even let poor WITS on there, and, as evidenced tonight, Mahe is on here without being provocative.

So, I wish them all the best and that we can all learn that there are legitimate alternative views and none of us has a monopoly on truth.

  26. Mahe, Not sure if you read the post I am referring to, but to me it’is a disgrace. I am aware that neither you or Mick are personally responsible. I have met Mick a Diamond of a ghuy.

However as I said previously I was a relative newcomer to the cyber world when I found CQN, I joined just to talk about Celtic with Celtic fans, I feel personally insulted by the post I refer to and as I said I have a decision to make whether this cyber chat is worth the hassle.

    —————–

So PL brings players in but doesn’t bother to tell the current manager or coaching staff, the player just turns up with his boots and no one on the training pitch knows who they are. You really think that’s how it goes down?

  30. Mahe the Madman on

    The Huddle,,

It has went down like that. There’s three or four over a decade or so , clearly not all the time but just recently we have an agent asking

  31. Mahe the Madman on

The club to snap up player quick while available and its yes okay looks the part thus Shved is ours.

Was over Brendans head and now we know he was leaving and likely at loggerheads with Peter he was never gonna be consulted.

  32. THE_HUDDLE @ 11:26 PM,

Yet surely this is the point. The whole point.

Everyone wants to take credit for the good and the great players

No one wants to take credit for the others.

Who decided Andy Robertson was too wee and VvD was just right?

    That is obvious.

Yet the point is, Peter Lawwell makes a value judgement on ALL the players that he signs off. He controls the process? Is he qualified to do so. Is he up to the task?

He states… there is a way “we work”.

Lenny gets that, John Park got that.

So, there is no argument, PL signs all the players.

Now I’m sure some players get recommended from Celtic friends… Bangura… Henrik??

Some agents and third parties…. Amido Balde

Some the Managers and Coaches known players… Scott Sinclair

    Some professionally scouted… VvD

Some SPLers everyone must notice… Ryan Christie

So, from dozens of angles, dozens of sources we get the chance to sign players…

The current squad would be a good exemplar.

Big Pedro decides, who he wants to sign and under what terms & conditions. No one else. Sure a lot of folk have an input but as Arzani and McGinn show only PL is the decision maker.

He’s made that abundantly clear. You may argue he does a great job. You may argue he does a lousy job. You can’t argue he doesn’t do the job…
