93 days of this left, the farming of Patrick Roberts

682

May is not out, the manager is not formally in place yet, but there’s an early bit of transfer rumblings underway as Celtic begin the process of building a squad for an attack on The Nine.

In response to speculation linking Celtic to one of his players, Motherwell chief exec, Alan Burrows, wrote on Twitter, “figures in papers are often educated stabs and not a true reflection on either what one/any club might be prepared to pay or the other might be prepared to accept.”

In short, any inquiry from Celtic for David Turnbull is at an early stage and conversations will not be around the figures reported.

We have 93 days like this until the transfer window closes….

Like you, I enjoyed watching Patrick Roberts.  He is a gifted player and good professional.  His could have been a permanent signing for Celtic but Pep Guardiola had other ideas.  Now he has signed a new contract, keeping him at at Manchester City for another three years, a club he will almost certainly never play competitively for, while simultaneously agreeing to a one year loan at newly promoted Norwich.

It is hard to escape agricultural metaphors when watching what the tier one clubs in England do with young talent.  They are a crop to hoard and sell, not to consume.  City paid Fulham £12m for Patrick four years ago.  His new contract will be worth several millions per year, and when his value is right, they will sell him.  This is a business model, independent of first team considerations.

A season in the English Premier League could be enough to raise a fee in excess of £20m, but there is a risk going to Norwich.  Patrick’s talents are most valuable unlocking packed defences.  Players of craft are less valued the further down the league you go, where robustness and counter-attacking football has become mandatory.

He would contribute his share in that Manchester City squad, or at Celtic, but his bit-part season at relegated Girona is a portent of what could lie ahead for him in Norwich.  At least he’ll be able to catch the tunes on North Norfolk Digital.

‪Do you think using whataboutery will console the victims and the families of those that were abused at our Boys Club? ‬

‪While I have no doubt about the motives of the Conservative Professor what motivated Celtic fan and MSP James Dornan?‬

‪Does any of this help the victims in any way?‬

have to say im at a loss to work out what the situation is with this

feel very uncomfortable even talking about it

but it seems theres a bit of a ‘phoney war’ going on between the victims and the club with both sides not wanting to put their cards on the table and give us their full thoughts

my assumption is that the victims want cash, so would it help break the impass if they put a figure on it and then everyone knows what the end game is?

Bsr,,substantially better is a far cry from mega and should it really be up to an accountant to decide how much a player is worth per week?

Should it be up to the manager/coach what a player is paid?

It may take a few years for a section of the Celtic support to realise the magnitude of what’s been achieved.

How very true, you think maybe I’m being nostalgic but those times were better… magical.

Fairly recently I was in the land of the monks and my cousins boy, who I hadn’t seen for many, many years sussed who I was…

…he immediately went on about one summer he’d spent at our house (Wycombe) as a younster and watching the Espana ’82 World Cup and really enjoying it – me telling him about the countries and the players etc… He was fairly beaming,.

As he left he said, I’ve still got that tournament guide with all the stickers we filled in together… truly magical…

The days when Celtic always manage to replace players before they’ve gone, are a long way off in any lifetime.

Not even the biggest of European clubs, always manage that.

Halfway through his contract nobody would have given Celtic tuppence for DB, and it wasn’t until he finally settled down from injury, and ‘bombscaring’ , he proved a fixture. He even got called up to the WC, but refused to talk to Celtic again until he came back.

Some Celtic fans and its never been confirmed will still refuse to believe that anybody bid, anything for Boyata, never mind the loss of the alleged £9M.

Rodgers could have signed one player and prabably squeezed another million out of the board to give us a decent CB for £3M, but alas he signed two diddies, (that’ll be Peter’s fault not St Brendan for the cynics)

If we include BR in the planing or lack of it, your argument might have some merit, but the goal posts were moved in these cases by Jean Marc Bosman, not the Celtic Board.

As regards dividends, none are paid on the shares held by supporters. I’ve heard that the same applies to the bigger money investors too. On the face of it, profits only push up the share price. In other clubs, alive and dead, there have been ways for controlling interests to send money their own way. Considering how open we have to be as a PLC and held to a much higher account than other clubs, I doubt there is much scope for our larger shareholders to get away with too much skimming.

Yet here he is playing the moral high ground . It is unashamedly a play for votes and we should not be taken in by his new found morality.

His play is not about the poor victims, it is about votes and posturing.

Where was his morality when a Glasgow club from the south side stated ” contact the liquidators for compensation”. This is a repugnant statement that went unchallenged.

How is his government dealing with historic masonic cover-ups ? . What has he got to say about the unbelievable Hollie Greig scandle ?

Celtic should and will accept responsibility as should the greater Scottish society.

But I’m in absolutely no doubt he is jumping on an agenda driven bandwagon and the poor innocent victims are only pawns.

  10. Mahe the Madman on

    The Huddle ,,

I believe we should have wage tiers and a players tier is determined by many factors such as minutes played, caps , age , probable potential , goals , tackles, and more.

Basically look at the overall picture.

Young Ajer for instance played more minutes than any of our other defenders last campaign,,is of a great age and potential ,, and when overall analysed is a prime candidate to move up a wage tier to make happy and hopefully keep settled.

When a top tier earner stalls for too long shift him,,like Rogic .

Top bracket should mean top performances and that should be impressed on them.

Shouldn’t be top tier if not an auto first choice either.

There’s no question that PL and his board are in charge of how much we pay for players, and thats replicated at other big clubs and small. CEO’s buy clubs in England for the very purpose of getting in on the playing side.

Some complain about the size of the budget and whether we pay enough, some just complain because its “Lawwell” that’s in charge of it.

We pay bigger wages and pay bigger signing fees than anybody in Scotland by a country mile, and wouldn’t dare go down the road of breaking the rules, to buy players ‘we couldn’t otherwise afford ‘ © Minty the CEO.

The budget should be set according to how the manager you have hired so presumably will back views the squad he inherited and the targets set for him against the resources available. Or at least it should be working that way.

What good are savings that are untouchable ? And btw you should be asking how much of that profit in the bank is going to charity as befitting a club that claims to be like no other and especially one with our foundations and historic ethos.

Seems before the manager had even officially accepted the job , a rag was told the squad doesn’t need that much rebuild.

Tut Tut and not good from where I ,and I happen to know quite a few others , sit.

You might be fine with that but please be aware many of us viewed that with a rye smile and a shake of the head.

Please also accept that if you are gonna set the budget without any input from your footballing department then it should be your head on the block if it goes pearshaped,,correct?

The Huddle , Brendan said live on tv he hadn’t a clue about Shved but we don’t need another wide man . Peter bought him. Lenny mrk 1 said the same about Amido Balde.

So PL bought those players without any input from anyone else?

Do you agree that PL was right in signing Dembele and Edouard without any input from anyone else?

  27. The laywers will not contact victims because The courts have already determined those bastards commited The crimes, why would celtic’s laywers want to question them.

The lawyers will be looking at celtic’s procedures and processes during The timeframe of The abuse and to establish if there was a link between cfc and cbc and if so what that was.

I am 100% sure failings will be uncovered because your talking about The 70s and 80s etc a generation not known for its rebustness and an era when such taboo subject were unthinkable to contemplate. I am sure every institution of that time would acknowledge that fact.

If any person within The walls of celtic’s park knew of and allow that abuse to go unchecked they should be locked up too. Thing is cunts that do those things are clever enough to make people beleive them and to hide their acts

    The Huddle,,

I believe it’s well established that certain players just ” appear ” . Rami Gershon another.

Yes players have been brought in without any input.

Until this point I have no been saying that’s right or wrong. Just pointing out it happens at our club of choice. Maybe others also.

Do I myself feel this should happen?

Yes but by a Director of Football or a title similar. Not an accountant Good Lord.

And certainly not by someone whose bonus is linked to turnover,,conflict of interest and all that.

You name a couple hits,,you would cringe at the misses list bro.

    I wouldn’t post it on a Sunday ( still is here ) .

    Would upset me. ;)

Post the full list, if PL gets shit for the failures then he has to get praise for the successes.

Or maybe there is a process in the club that involves everyone and the blame/praise is spread.

  30. With regards to our CEO and his understanding of our business plan.

2006 / PL = Youth is the future — tries to sign 3 players with potential and fails.

Three big players at an average age of 28 and three quarters.

2008 / PL = The WF window in Jan 2009 — you really couldn’t make this stuff up.

2009 / PL = New manager required — end up paying big money for No.10 on the list. Only MMcG would have been worse or would he as BTM collapses under the weight of MIB mistakes.

We pay well over the odds for a striker and watch JMcC move south for buttons.

2010 / NL + PL joint production = The AMcG departure — we were so skint he didn’t have a choice.

2013 / PL = The Selling Club becomes a reality — Cracks begin to show.

2014 / PL = The RD experiment — Every excuse under the sun put out to explain the tumble weed in the LL Upper.

2016 / DD = The moons align and BR turns up to tell us what we want to hear.

Step change for the better regarding the management team and how it shows.

    Most of the time …

2018 / PL and BR = Willy waving becomes an Olympic sport.

Huge amounts of cash in the bank but loan deals are the way forward.

2019 / PL + DD = Cheap is the only way to describe their plans regarding a new manager.

Abusing someone’s love for the club would be another way of describing this shambles.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory would not be the half of it.

We are now officially a cash cow and answer to the name of “The Bronski’s”.

    Small Town B(h)oys.

DD has had 20 years in charge / PL has been his point man for 16 years.

The learned nothing apart from finding new ways to fail.

  31. Mahe

Why should a “football man” have the skill set to structure a wages bill?

Where in his training and past did he pick up these skills?

Is it taught in the SFA courses and, if so, to what level?

Does Neil know what amortisation is?

Is there not a need for some harmony between the accountancy skills of the Board/CEO/Suits wing and the manager/coach who, unless, he is a “dyed in the wool” fan will always want “just one more player- I promise he won’t cost too much”. There is always a need for discipline on the spending front and there will always be a level of player we cannot afford. When a budget manager (whether he is an accountant or a business builder, like Fergus) and coach work in harmony, there is a chance of harmony and progress at a club. We seem to prefer a warring scenario, where we trust the football man, even if he cannot count past 100, to manage all the financials of the football department (transfer fees, wages, bonuses etc:). No such superhuman exist.

It falls apart either way when the likes of Fergus was unwilling to back Lou Macari, because we had almost gone to the wall or when the old Board told Davie Hay to buy his own transfer targets or, even when Brendan and Peter Lawwell went to war, the club is a loser. Brendan was the football man but he was the one with the poor record in our transfer market, unless you believe the fantasy that PL bought all the duds and foisted them on him.

But, equally, Brian Quinn had to reign in the Seville spend because the football man MON, was unwilling to do so. He suggested that having to add the cheap buys of Laursen, Sylla and Hernandez, and promote the likes of Smith and Wallace, prevented him from getting to next level. He wanted one more of each to replace Hedman, Balde, Lennon, Hartson etc; and he did not want to hear that it was too risky.

A balance is needed. We are no longer in the Clough market of the 70s or even the Harry Redknapp market of the 90s and noughts. Football is a volatile unpredictable business. One man’s risk adverse is another man’s balanced judgement.

The real world of transfers shows that players are more unwilling to come to us than we are unwilling to go for them.

The point being missed here, probably because we’re used to it, what are Lawwell’s qualifications in signing football players? Nil…..
