A simple lie, compliant Celtic voices and it was job done

381

I was out and about this morning and heard Neil Lennon on the radio making it very clear that he was not about to abandon Bolton Wanderers, despite their inability to pay wages or settle creditors when due. Having “shed millions from the payroll in the summer” his focus was on winning points with a squad augmented by youth development players.

For Neil, the financial realities are simply the parameters he had to work within.

Think back 18 months to when he left Glasgow. Celtic Park was awash with amicable statements from club and manager but the news coverage could not have been more skewed – Neil left because he was unhappy at working within his given budget. We had former Celtic players broadcasting this message that very day. And like every negative Celtic story, it got traction among those more than happy to believe that narrative.

It was nonsense. Celtic’s football budget hadn’t changed. Neil had not adopted a view of himself which only allowed him to deal with more expensive players. What happened was a PR campaign took flight within moments of the news breaking. Dig into Celtic, turn the fans against them. It worked too. A simple lie, a couple (literally) of compliant ‘Celtic’ voices and it was job done.

This has been going on for decades. It’s only recently, with formal PR companies competing for the same demographic, we’ve seen how these messages get into the media.

Celtic have PR to arrange media conferences, distil club news and formal statements. There’s no attempt at subversion, either outwards or at our own demographic.

Saturday is a big day for our Treble Winning Captains. Shortly after Billy McNeil unveils his statue in front of the stadium, Tom Boyd, our only other Treble Winning Captain will be in the Kerrydale Suite, to sign personalised copies of The Winds of Change. The book which covers Celtic managers from Liam Brady to Martin O’Neill, across what was an unforgettable story of redemption.

Joining Tom at the signing session will be Billy’s former team mate, John Hughes. If you get talking to Yogi, just listen. He’s seen it all, so don’t interrupt him.

You’ll be able to buy The Windows of Change, as well as Caesar and The Assassin, the book which documents Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s periods in charge, inside the Kerrydale Suite before kick off.

Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium Seat tickets for Saturday’s game in the Jock Stein Stand. To enter the competition, what you’ve got to do is email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team we’re playing in the email Subject Line.  Competition closes at 18:00 TODAY, so it’s only open for a short window….

…………while you are entering the competition. You might want to take an extra minute and donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen project. You have already built four kitchens in Malawi. These donations go towards putting food on the table.  You can donate here.

Well! Where to start, I read your four assessments on how you think this res.12 is, or will play out your choices are not far of what most might think, and you have my coat hung on choice #2, let’s just say I’m not getting into that one, as it is not as cut and dried as you have made out to be, and no offence has been taken on my part either, but for me to go into it at this time in present would not help anyone at all, so I’ll put that one to bed for the moment if you do not mind.

A couple of weeks ago I had a post conversation on my status on how I thought res12 was going to pan out, and it was along the same kind of lines you have on your choice #4 and still is, and until these court cases are all done everything is up in the air, personally I think they are all decoys, and then I have the feeling that we will be reverting back to #2 again, so let’s just see how things go later, I’v had a tough year this year, and at this time of the year it’s not nice to be going at each other’s throats, so I’m calling a Christmas amnesty for all in here.

So many questions about where we go from here. So many different opinions. What IMHO is a concerted effort and leadership. It may very well be that the Board for sound reasons is playing “canny”. There may be areas in which the Board are constrained by SF A “selectively imposed” rules. Therefore, shareholders and supporters must be ready to take effective action and not to be merely howling at the moon.

May I ask those of sharper minds than myself whether there would be merit in attempting to requesting an EGM to put steel in our site’s backbones?

CELTIC DIARY THURSDAY DECEMBER 17: COVER UP OR CLEAN UP ?

December 17, 2015 · by Ralph Malph · in Diary, Latest

On Saturday, Celtic will unveil a statue of living legend Billy McNeill. The man who led the club on its greatest day will be immortalised-like he wasn’t already-with a statue outside the ground.

    He’s chuffed;

“I am sure Saturday will be a fantastic day for myself and my family, if somewhat emotional. I have said this before, but when Peter [Lawwell, chief executive] contacted me regarding the statue I was completely taken by surprise and to now think that I will be honoured alongside such great men as Brother Walfrid [club founder], Jock Stein and my pal Jinky [Jimmy Johnstone], really does fill me with great pride.

“Celtic has been in my blood and a part of my life for so many years and to be recognised in this way by the club I love is truly humbling.”

    There aren’t many like him.

It’s thoroughly deserved, and couldn’t happen to a better bloke.

The Dairy didn’t appear yesterday, it was one of those days when everything had to be done five minutes ago, and as a result hardly anything got done.

    Did I miss anything?

Well, it appears so. something quite significant, by the sounds of it.

Scottish football is at a crossroads.

    Again.

But this time we need to make a firm decision about the direction we take, and stick to it. Without fear or favour.

Lets get it into context first of all.

A few weeks ago, at Celtics AGM, chairman Iain Bankier showed a bit of support for his under fire colleague Ian Livingston, largely by accusing the support of having a racist element, and they then went on to name and shame a couple of fans who had, it seems, made outrageous comments. In fact, I remember reading somewhere the police were investigating. As far as I know, they still are, and happily for the board, it’s relieved a bit of pressure on them, especially as the fans are now more concerned with arguing over whether or not Ronny Deila is any good again.

So, wee bit of deflection, and its all gone away.

The fans were brushed off, kind of as an inconvenience.

And all is quiet in the boardroom again.

Come to think of it, looking at the wider picture, theres a fair bit of that going on in the Scottish game.

Comedy duo Stewart Regan and Neil Doncaster have, amid a wee bit of controversy, announced new formats for the league cup, hinted at league reform, and had Dave King, chairman of stricken Ibrox club Rangers International, round for a chat.

Whereupon King, in court for the umpteenth time, allowed his lawyers to state that Mike Ashley had been paid his £5m and everyone could stop whinging.

Except, of course, he hadn’t, and still hasn’t, been paid.

King then went on to announce he was more than happy to meet up with club chairmen and plan the way forward for the game.

    Celtic have stayed quiet, but Aberdeen haven’t. Their chairman Stewart Milne, somewhat surprisingly, spoke out in the Aberdeen Evening Express, saying;

“We want to have all of the top clubs up in the Premiership,”

“If Rangers come up with the right approach – and everyone allows them to put what happened in the past behind them – it would be good for the game.

“It would be fantastic if Hibs were able to get back up to the Premiership this season as well.

“When you look back over the last five to six years we have come through some horrendous times economically.

“Some of our top clubs not being in the top division for a substantial part of that period didn’t help.

“We are bringing less money into the game through media deals than we were back in 2007.

“The Sky contract was renegotiated when we lost Rangers because they were part of the deal.

“We could no longer fulfil our agreement with them so money was pulled back.

“What we have to do now is find ways of bringing more money back into the game.

“Having Rangers and Hibs back at the top level again would help.”

It’s the second line which is concerning me.

Are we now seeing a shift in policy from chairman to align themselves with the authorities to allow the past record of the Ibrox club to be , well, forgotten about ?

We’ve seen how other football associations deal with cheats-in the cases in Spain and the Netherlands, where Real Madrid and Twente Enschede, swiftly and without fear or favour. Real had fielded an ineligible player in the Cup, and were expelled. Twente were charged with having a ridiculously unpronouncable name and told they couldn’t compete in Europe for three years.

Yet here in Scotland, a club was liquidated after years of finacial irregularities and whispers-alright, shouts -of collusion between the authorities and the club. They were allowed to start again, albeit at the bottom, and incredibly have been allowed to pursue the myth of being the same club.

Everyone knows this, and yet Milne insists that if

everyone allows them to put what happened in the past behind them

    everything will be hunkydory again.

He claims that clubs have suffered

    some horrendous times economically

when , in fact, most have cut their cloth accordingly and are seeing the accounts if not in the black, then certainly with a less glaring shade of red.

    All of this, he says, is down to media income;

“We are bringing less money into the game through media deals than we were back in 2007.

“The Sky contract was renegotiated when we lost Rangers because they were part of the deal.

“We could no longer fulfil our agreement with them so money was pulled back.

Thats the second club chief to confirm-Lawwell is the other-that the Sky deal did indeed require four Celtic -Rangers games. Thus eliminating any sense that it was a sporting competition judged purely on merit.

Apart from the fact that the deal was entered into in the first place on those grounds, which in itself is at best immoral, and at worst illegal, it throws up another question.

You see, we have all known for quite some time that the old Ibrox club were in a bit of bother with Hector, and other creditors. It was obvious that they would not survive.

    In fact, here’s a picture from a meeting at Hampden when the issue was raised;

There was an attitude that it would never happen in those corridors of power, and when it did, there was a collective howl of anguish, and incredible, when you look back, movement towards just letting them get away with it.

Thankfully, men such as Turnbull Hutton wouldn’t stand for it.

Now, after four years finding their feet in the game, the new club want to be allowed back at the top table. Hearts scuppered their plans last year, although its fair to say Ally McCoist helped out probably more than he had intended to, and there seems a real fear that Hibernian might put a stop to it this year.

And don’t write off Falkirk either.

With Regan and Doncaster desperately trying to avoid the real issues, Milne is the first chairman to publicly ask the fans to forget the past and use this as a base for building for the future.

Desperate Doncaster and Renegade Regan will one day seek alternative employment-the sooner the better-and they will have to face an interviewers question as to how they handled this fiasco.

Well, they haven’t handled it at all.

With this in mind, bith have flung together ill thought out plans to improve the game, whilst neatly side stepping the only thing that would improve it.

They want to restructure it, paper over the cracks, and the idea of an expanded top division has surfaced again. Perhaps as early as next season. For obvious reasons, linked possibly to Milnes outburst the other day.

The idea here is to get money back into the game, money which , and I cannot believe they genuinely think this is true, will not be there unless some form of Rangers is there too.

    As Milne said;

“What we have to do now is find ways of bringing more money back into the game.

    Yes we do.

We could start by cleaning up its image. The Ibrox shennanigans left a foul odour around the game. Sponsors do not want their product associated with it.

We could stop telling the world the product is poor. The media are particularly complicit here. Who reallistically would invest in the game when all and sundry are decrying it’s quality ?

We could be seen to do what every other country does.

Punish the cheats, retrospectively, and ensure that it could never happen again. Ban those responsible from the game.

There is room for a spirit of Rangers club, but only if they promise to behave.

The support are largely blameless for the actions of those who killed their club, and those who were involved in pretending that a “basket of assets ” was, in fact, still the same club were not only allowed, but positively encouraged by the media to line their own pockets from the pockets of the support.

Until this is dealt with, and finally put to rest, the game cannot recover. All of those involved, be they based in Hampden, Ibrox or elsewhere , including those who wrote about it or spoke about it in the media as though nothing bad had happened must also be banned from future involvement in the game.

We need a clean up crew, and we need it now.

If we don’t, then there will be a lot of empty stadia soon, and we all know that football without fans is nothing.

Thats no idle threat. Thats just how things are going, based on reading and hearing what fans think, and not just Celtic fans either.

    Everyone is sick of it.

It’s time to put it right before it all goes wrong again.

Either we clean it up and start over, or we cover it up and carry on.

It’ll be the fans who decide, because no-one else appears to have the stomach for the job ahead.

Thats perhaps why I mentioned Billy McNeill at the start of this Diary.

You might be thinking that a man of his calibre has no place on this page, which contains the names of so many, shall we say, wrong ‘uns ( Thats not an h missing there, by the way. )

Guys like him are what football is all about.

There are few like him, and his honesty and integrity should be held up as an example of everything that isn’t there in Scottish football at the moment.

We need to be reminded of that sometimes, and show the contrast between the world of yesteryear, where eleven lads from Glasgow conquered Europe, with honest endeavour and skill.

There is a game out there worth saving.

    Somewhere….

  7. Good morning all

Before I head off out into thee wider world a few words

I did not hear what Stewart Milne said about ‘Rangers’ but can imagine. I can also imagine that any Kow-towing to King and co by Aberdeen’s board will not play well with much of his club’s own support if demonstrations they ( not us) have held on this matter are anything to go by. Speaking with colleagues and friends who support neither Celtic nor Rangers I am always struck by the extent to which they would wish the records to be re-written. The media – a true national disgrace- may wish to portray this issue as a few paranoid Celtic fans and internet bampots but as so often that media is lying.

I am not a fan of the Celtic board these days , I believe that its strategy when it has come to signing players was overly cautious – especially during 2012 and 2013- and that Ronny Deila was not appointed because he was good and a man with a grand vision but because he was cheap. I also dislike the plc board’s refusal to formally implement the Living Wage and found the outburst by Ian Bankier at the recent AGM a complete embarrassment. These are opinions of mine not facts.

I know there is a rumour out there that BDO will not be able to pursue their appeal against the recent court judgement in favour of HMRC in respect of the Big Tax Case (BTC). I can see the logic in believing that the recent charmless charm offensive by King and his cohorts has come about because they know that legal avenues are about to be closed off for good and Rangers guilt will be exposed finally, legally and forever. I am not sure whether King would actually be that bothered about titles dishonestly won years ago being ‘stripped’ and even subsequently being reallocated to other teams but to be seen to do so will play well with his own new club’s supporters who will never accept any formal alteration of record books anyway. I am talking about a rumour here but bear with me. I would say that even if I agreed with more of the way the Celtic plc board operates I would not give Celtic a single penny again if they too were too kow-tow to King and just agree to moving on.

But this has not happened yet and given that the Celtic board did not participate in the ‘greatest game in the world’ farrago that surrounded the 2014/5 League Cup semi-final and although the Celtic announcement following the most recent BTC verdict was not the guns blazing missive some would have wished it did not seem remotely conciliatory to me either.

My own precarious financial situation may see me not renew my season ticket next season anyway – I would wish that were not so. As to whether I will not renew because the board plays King;s game to his liking I would point out that although the plc board is not to my taste on many matters I think that as they have not yet, ever, indicated that they will just move on and welcome Rangers to Celtic Park as though they were old friends. It may happen but I am less inclined to believe it will than many here who seem convinced not just that it will happen but that it already is happening.

We shall see what occurs but one thing I have learned from this is that what I, my family and friends think or want will not make an iota of difference.

    Hi Phil

I’ve just put a very similiar post to this one on JJ’s sight. I just had to get it off my “BIG CHEST”

Right here we go. As a Celtic fan at first I just presumed the level of cheating by the governing bodies and referees was actually worse than my “PARANOIA” had led me to believe all these years. I just took it in my stride and thought YA BEAUTY at last I’ve been vindicated for all those hours of arguments in the pub. It really was no big deal, I always knew this was how it was. But the revelations of the last 3 years really opened my eyes and I must admit I have enjoyed the gratification it has brought me. But thanks to this blog and one or two others. I find it hard to believe just how deep rooted the cheating has been and how far certain characters and establishments are willing to go to perpetuate the myth of this episode just being trivial. From the top of Scottish football to the comedians claiming to be reporters to the shysters and spivs ripping off their club to the PEEPUL’S bully boy tactics. I cannot begin to tell you how repugnant this whole thing has turned into. Now I really hope all genuine football supporters turn their backs on any back room deals they may all be trying to strike to keep this myth walking upright. This episode has to be brought to a conclusion and the only way I see it being done is to boycott all and any football matches sanctioned under the S.F.A. As a famous gardener once said “WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE” and just how stupid do they think we are. We must bring them to task and rid our game of them. In any other industry these guys would be thrown in jail and barred from ever having anything to do with the said industry again. Because to all fair minded people of this generation who can all read, write, count and tell the time no matter what entity comes out of the other side of this debacle it won’t be in any way, shape or form the team I grew up knowing as my club’s biggest rivals. We have to root out the people at the top now, that is becoming more important than the demise of the team fae Govan.

  20. I agree with Joe Filippis Haircut at 10.43. The solution IMHO is “Education, Education, Education” e.g. Could the salient points of Resolution 12 and the side letters be reproduced the format of aQandA pamphlet taped to every seat at a home match? Would requisitioning an EGM to formalize shareholders’ opposition to Regan and Doncaster’s attempts to erase from history the misdeeds of the dead club mobilize the support and, perhaps, a wider audience. Arguing on an internet site, IMHO, is usefully only if it clarifies the issues and the strategy to address them satisfactorily.

No one has had the guts to officially proclaim them the same club – not the SFA, not the SPFL and, unless I missed it, Celtic have not said so either.

Really !!! after the kids got booted out this season if Sevco came back up – without consultation or fore warning

Such a decision (i.e to marginalise our attending children and I suppose alienate their parents/guardians) is not made lightly. It also reinforces the concept of A RETURN to Old Firm pricing. I.e a better product, a chance to make more instantaneous money rather than develop a relationship with those children. The return of Sevco and the bigot pound that it generates is considered far more important than our children. Then 6 months later when urged at the AGM to address this issue we are told that it will be reviewed.

I deduce lots from this stance and it is not good with the caveat that if this has been done to let the outside world think that the plc is going along with Old Firm reincarnation but somewhere along the line they will pull a rabbit out the bag. If you believes this then IMHO (honest and humble) then you are hanging on for nothing

    Morning fellow eejit:)

When will we ever find out who ibrokes belongs to ??

Until that place is flattened….the cheating goes on…

But, never mind them….what about the Lawwell & Park…Arthur Daley double act ?

From Seville to…..Molde…..who are the fools ?

Never mind ice cream & jelly….that shouldn’t have been brought out until…the job was done.

The back door was left opened and, the huns got in again through div 3….

…..now, they’re almost back to do it all again…….who’s the fools now, eh.

They slipped under the radar for 4 years to avoid paying ‘any’ of the £140 million…..

…they shouldn’t have been allowed back until all was investigated etc…..

….instead, we had Lawwell away down south to negotiate a TV-Deal to give them a chance to get rebuilt.

    WTF ?????

Celtic will pay, probably for evermore for their weak, kowtowing at the Govt- Summit.

When I say Celtic, I mean you, and all the paying Celtic supporters who’ll be shafted from every angle to accommodate the new cheating huns.

Sick of saying this but…..the ‘only’ way that all of this will stop is when, Celtic FC are driven y a board full of rebellious Celtic supporters who ‘wont’ kowtow to a hun-establishment….it’s not too late…….not too late…..not too late…..not too late…..not too late….not too late….not too late…….please make it stop.

The ghosts of the Jungle will be turning in their graves……

    ……..Celtic Supporters – You’ll Never Walk Alone…….

    …..bye…..

Never forget these clowns and the pathological liar, are the establishment, heyyyyyyyy wouldent it be so Fn easy to just wade right in there, and get it done and dusted, one more time, two words….scottish establishment………..it’s not that easy, ffs, look at what they are getting away with right now? All they do is go to court, stick a brother on the bench, and we are back to square one, AGAIN! they don’t pay fines, they don’t get recognised as being liquidated, lie in court, don’t pay tax, get a secret agreement, are backed very strongly by the SMSM, allowed to finish games when there stadium is falling down around them…..on an on an on an on, this isn’t a slam dunk make no mistake about that, it’s gonna take a while, but slagging CFC is not the answer, in my opinion that’s what they want us to to, it’s called divide and conquer, trust me don’t take your eye off the ball, CFC are not the bad guys here, don’t be as gullible as thems.

Doesn’t say much for the PLC, when an idiot like glibby can run rings round them.

The huns do what they like, the Celtic PLC….look the other way.

    Sad.

I have nothing in common with rich businessmen like DD or PL.

But you would think, they would challenge the “establishment” with some solid evidence of cheating….but no, incredibly they let sevco do whatever the feck the like.

Until we get real Celtic men on the PLC…The PLC will continue to be shafted by daft huns.

When you look the other way so much….its hardly surprising that you don’t see anything.
