Aberdeen, Newco and Celtic sign wingers with different targets

263

Within around a week of each other, Aberdeen, Newco and Celtic are all likely to sign wide midfield players, although with different profiles. Niall McGinn re-joins Aberdeen on a contract which will expire in 2021, a few weeks short of his 34th birthday. Celtic are set to announce the capture of St Mirren’s Lewis Morgan (21) imminently, while Newco have confounded all by paying money (or at least promising to) for former Motherwell winger, Jamie Murphy (28).

Murphy was irrepressible at Motherwell and it’s no surprise the Newco coaches were interested in him. Media photographs of him this morning suggest he’s a tad out of shape, but if he can recapture his Motherwell form he will be a solid SPFL player.

When Niall McGinn went to Korea in the summer it appeared to signal the end of an Aberdeen team which comfortably established itself as the second best in Scotland – recording a Best of the Rest treble last season. Considering the departures from Pittodrie, and manager Derek McInnes’ dalliances with other clubs, it is surprising Aberdeen have managed to hold onto second spot.

They will need McGinn back at his productive best if they are to finish the season in second against Newco (caveat: if the latter remains solvent).

Celtic’s opportunity is all about transforming Lewis Morgan into the next Stuart Armstrong. As well as being the preferred destination for aspiring talent, we have the luxury of being able to plan long-term. Right now, Lewis is the most exciting prospect of all three. He will join Celtic because he wants to become a Champions League player, not fight for second place.

That will take work on the part of the player, but they know what they are doing at Lennoxtown.

  1. Auldheid,

Thanks for your replies in relation to my post regarding what reforms of the administration of Scottish Football might prevent a repeat of the shambles involving ‘Rangers?’

Failing any progress on reform your posted stated,

**”I would make ST purchase conditional on reform of the club licensing system and taking it out of the hands of the SFA.”**

    ____________________________________________________________

    * Has there been any discussion between the various supporters groups at Celtic in relation to making the purchase of STs conditional upon repeal of the club licensing system?

    * Has there been any discussion between supporters of other clubs in relation to a proposed non purchase of STs?

    * How do you envisage such discussions progressing? Is there any plan in place or proposed to co-ordinate any protests at Celtic or elsewhere?

Thanks again for all of your efforts on behalf of the game.

  2. staying on the liverpool everton theme, tonights quiz question what scottish player did everton fans call the golden vision.

  3. Clogher Celt

Not to my knowledge but it is a natural thought as result of SFA response, but pursuing it should be up to the CSA and CST to pursue within the Celtic family.

They in turn need prodded by their membership but first the idea needs planted with their members.

Same applies to supporter groups of other clubs.

It might take another administration at Ibrox to focus attention on the whole issue.

Somethings just have to be handed over to fate.

  4. AULDHEID COSY CORNER BHOY, spot on byall accounts a great player, never saw him but everton fans adored him.

The tabloids now trying to make a thing about Paul Larkin’s Armageddon getting its first showing at Celtic Park.

Paul has done excellent work in getting background on Murray using his influence with the Edinburgh establishment and the media to try to destabilise us and put us out of business.

The Asterisk Years , his first film , really opened my eyes and can be seen on youtube.

Paul as well as the Resolution 12 campaigners should forever have our gratitude.

  6. As much as I respect all those involved in Resolution 12 I don’t see it happening. Our club custodians don’t want it to happen despite the will of the supporters. As it was and so shall it be. Hh

  7. Back in the era of the “golden vision” the other Scots who were in the Everton team were Alex Scott (ex Rangers international winger ) and Jimmy Gabriel. All the top English teams had a nucleus of Scots.

JimBaxter ousted an accomplished Rangers midfielder who went another team not far from Everton. Who was he?

  8. There was some utter nonsense posted earlier this week saying that Celtic supporters should not be critical of their team or their club and should be grateful for being a Celtic supporter. That kind of uncritical subservient attitude resulted in the near death knell of our club. Hh

  9. Correct Big Packy .

His fellow Scots in the Bill Shankly championship side were Ian St John , Ron Yeats , the goal-keeper Tommy Lawrence.

  10. Moonbeams Thankfully there were enough savvy Tim’s who realised we were being fed a load of nonsense by the old board and a revolution was required.

I have patchy memories of that 4-4 game in 63. Being eight years old i was obviously too young to fully understand football but one thing that came across loud and clear was the crowd moaning loudly (in frustration i now realise) and my old man more than most. I recall semsing something surreal that day as a four goal lead was lost, but older generations were well used to it.

I have clearer memories of the 9-0 Airdrie game a couple of months later when Haffey missed the penalty for ten but also doings at the hands of Falkirk,Kilmarnock and Deidclub. The latter giving me my first taste of sickness in the pit of my stomach. Hard times indeed and after James Alexande Gordon read out Hibernian 2 Celtic 0 one Saturday in 1964, I said to my da ‘can we no support another team da, its rubbish every week’…..’naw son’ he said ‘you’ll always be a Celtic supporter, we’ll come good one day’

Less than three years later we were European Champions. He’s 85 now and still reminds me of that day.

  12. Cosy Corner Bhoy

I think Rangers got Dave Smith from Aberdeen as a replacment for Jim Baxter.

Liverpool had Tommy Smith a rugged scouser.

Away to watch golf from USA! Sh!te at that too but at least I don’t try to answer any questions:).

    =====================

Indeed, but here we are having got the SFA to accept an investigation is necessary in spite of them telling Celtic in March 2016 that they had put our information in front of external advisers who told SFA that there was no case to answer.

Against all the odds we persisted.

In a meeting with PL last November a blogger from a well recognised site asked about Res12.

Another blogger said it was dead but PL said that was not the case and it was a smoking gun.

    As ever. We’ll see.

Talking of the scousers, my wee Red mate in work told me that everyone in his class at a Kirby primary school , red and blue, wanted us to beat Inter. The two main reasons he said were, they loved the kit, and Inter had robbed Liverpool (well the ref actually) two seasons previous.

  16. Auldheid,

Looks like there will be a few executives and profiteers feeling the pain of regret and guilt as the inevitable slowly happens with this charade.

Hopefully the Plc or someone like the CSA or CT will have the courage to put the good name of Celtic first and take some kind of a lead in this ongoing farce.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply on a Friday evening.

That is a question that supporters should put to Celtic before they renew at any point they have concerns..

Obviously it should not take that long but ultimately it is where pressure for answers can be exerted.
