Alan Thompson, scourge of the Rangers

438

If you’ve been on Celtic Quick News since the beginning you’ll know how high a regard I hold Alan Thompson.  In 2004 I called him the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  His goal won us our first Champions League points, he scored the only goal of our two-legged Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona in 2004, he has scored two thirds of our competitive goals on German soil and his deliveries for Larsson, Hartson and Sutton were legendary.  His free kicks and corners always threatened.

He also punished Rangers more than any other midfield player in the last 40 years, scoring seven goals against them.

We have had many more skilful midfielders, but no one since the Lions came closed to making the impact of Alan Thompson in the games it really mattered.

We wish him well.

Last week’s episode of Game of Thrones was epic. Best so far.

Have you read the books? Much more to come in future seasons.

I was referring to those questioning the manner of the dismissal i.e. phonecall, without knowing the facts. Perhaps CQN is less guilty than other sites but there are still those who are too eager to knee-jerk. This really angers me when it is in response to the SMS tripe. I have just seen this headline “Celtic Sack Coach Alan Thompson Over ‘Lifestyle’ Concerns”, CaughtOffside 14:40. Who disclosed this explanation? The Celtic F.C. statement clearly indicates the subject can not be discussed as it is now a legal matter. Yet some of our less ‘thoughtful’ fans are ready to consume this hype. All I am saying is that we should wait for the full story and I personally believe that can only come from one source and that is either Neil Lennon or Celtic F.C. Unless Alan Thompson is an extraordinary human being, his version will be biased towards the unfairness of his dismissal. In view of the

litigation, Celtic must tell the truth.

Yeah, I guessed the point you were making, and was being conservative with our money, given neither of us know how much VW earns.

We don’t need to enhance or improve every players existing contract because they were exceptional in their first season, though VW may prove to merit further inducements to remain for the best of his career at Paradise.

That would be just like the King of Kings for whom there was no future big transfer and was wooed by the gift of playing for Celtic, along of course with a tidy sum.

  4. Was never WGS biggest fan but it would be great to see him back to support Lenny, maybe even for a season. He has invaluable experience. He also knows the ropes better than anyone else.

Can’t see it happening. But, hey, after the last few months, anything seems possible.

What was wrong with Peter Grant? He was no mug & a better player than most gave him credit for. And what of Joe Ledley? He was great last season.

    PS

I would haate to see that weevindictive

Went out for a long work lunch and just catching up on the blog.

Sounds like a great wee holiday over here with the missus. I really like the Born, its nowhere as touristy as Gotico and has much more charm. Good eating in the El Born, you will be able to get your fill of tapas, pinxtos, etc.

I really like La Chacha (http://www.lachachabcn.com/) if you want an Argentinean steak dinner or Mosquito which is a strange mix of fine beers and ales from all over Europe served with great dim sum. (http://www.mosquitotapas.com/).

Great idea to head down to Stiges. I was in Vilanova (the next town along) at the weekend there. The beaches in Barcelona are very crowded and if I do go, I certainly don´t go into the water. Once you get out the city the water is much cleaner, the water is nice and so much more pleasant.

Hope you have a great one!

Mort/Vmhan- is there not a lot of gratuitous houghmagandie in ‘Game of Thrones’?

  7. Do we actually NEED another coach?

We have NL, Mjalby as his number 2 and Gary Parker who no one seems to know what he does. No doubt that we’ll have scouts, reserve coaches, under 21, 17 AND 15 coaches (John Kennedy).

Personally, why don’t we endorse Dave “call me God” Cameron’s austerity measures and promote from within, THEREFOR NOT BRING ANYONE IN.

  8. Mort no I have just finished Larsonns trilogy and have loads of books at home still to read, I’ve caught up now but waiting for one episode/ week after 3 at a time will do my nut :>)

I love all the pomp and pageantry, blood n guts and as mentioned the twists n turns ( not you twisty…. Get back to the horses), perhaps Coorslad was right maybe I’m a closet royalist.

There is. Don’t think much of it adds to the story but its there if that’s what you like.

  10. That last part was meant to read “wee vindictive blue nose B Davies anywhere near Paradise”. That would be a major act of pollution.

    Blaming this eeffing ipad!

Some lunatics on here today have been sniffing a few lines of the old moon dust.

Yes, but not as much as in the Spartacus series – Gods of vthe Arena; Blood and Sand AND Vengence.

There was also a fair amount involving wee Eva Green in a costume drama [Camelot?]

It certainly put the ole Dark Ages in a whole new light for me.

Not really seen the coverage out width CQN so can´t really comment. However, I am not surprised by want you are saying. It’s disappointing when fans lap up the drivel of laptop loyal.

I am, of course curious about what has happened. More importantly I hope the situation can be resolved quickly and amicably. I hope both parties walk away with a fair settlement.

The Spanish Civil War is a fascinating subject. I read Homage to Catalonia years ago now and I loved it. Plan on rereading it again this summer now I am fairly well travelled around the Catalan region and the geographical references will mean much more to me.
