  1. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

    DAVID66 on 23RD JANUARY 2022 4:28 PM

Is there a list of sectarian songs that our support should not be singing?

If I recall Boys of the old Brigade was 1.

Seriously what others is there, I seen on here a few weeks back a debate about Roamin in the gloamin. Always thought celebrating your faith was a good thing but hey ho.

I cannot see that song or indeed any of the folk songs turning other religions away from supporting Celtic as they are not degenerating any faith.

    =============================================

    David66 – hello pal.

I completely agree that there is nothing at all wrong with celebrating your own background – in fact was making the same point yesterday.

However, the song I mentioned specifically earlier today was ‘On the One Road’. It is a song about bringing people together, no matter what their background – that’s the underlying message of the whole song.

However, the add-on “…Soon there’ll be no Protestants at all…” is anything but a celebration of your own faith, and the opposite of encouraging the breaking down of barriers. It is exactly the same in nature, if not target, the anti-Catholic bile that spews out at Ibrox – and several other grounds in Scotland.

    We’ve used similar analogies ourselves.

“…Soon there’ll be no Muslims at all…” – is that OK?

Or “…Soon there’ll be no Jews at all…” – are we happy with that?

    Of course not.

Celebrate what you are – Hail Hail from the Garden of God – brilliant.

The other stuff? Keep it away from Celtic.

  2. Jeez there’s some hand ringing sweetie wives on here. I can well understand why other Celtic forums have the opinions they have about this one.

  3. DAVID66 on 23RD JANUARY 2022 4:28 PM

Surely the correct place for celebrating your faith is in church ( Mosque etc )

It would be an interesting statistic to see how many professing their faith at a football match actually attend a place of worship.

    HH to you.

  4. THEBHOYWITHMCGRAININHISSIDE @ 5:09 PM,

Everyday’s an education – I know they started marching in Scotland to oppose the emancipation of Catholics Bill.

Don’t know if you ever read it but the Irish bhoys put some stonking stuff regarding Irish History on Senntinel Celts.

    They should make a compilation.

    Hail Hail

Who gives a monkeys what other sites think of CQN. At least we can formulate our own opinions rather than blindly follow the pack.

But to indulge, just what sites are we talking about so we can give an educated opinion. ?

    HH.

  6. Mmmm…

Interesting songs debate. Haven’t heard that awful add on to ‘On the one road…’ for donkeys years but not sure we have a sufficient sample size to really be getting our knickers in a twist that we’ve got a sizeable sectarian problem. Have we ?

Irish fellas in a pub….coming over here, bastardising ‘their’ song too :)

Acceptable rebel songs? We just end up getting to the conclusion that some prefer the ‘old violence good, recent violence bad’ worldview of respectability. A free statism myopic view that allows itself to pick and choose which men of violence are acceptable to sing about.

Ireland is complex. Who actually thinks the song debate isn’t the same? Good Celtic supporters versus bad Celtic supporters ?

    Mmmmmmm

Let the People Sing (Big Wavy who likes the rebs, hate the Papa Francesco dirge and the new Jota song and wants to see a return of JCGE as a schild of the 80s).

Good to see you back on…….but I accept that may not be a unanimous viewpoint :-)

  8. Just heard that Clancy has been removed from the upcoming SPFL games! Will check veracity of txt message, but would not surprise of course.

Re CalMac – as another poster suggested, the ‘tackle’ on him would have resulted in a red card in RUGBY. The rugby authorities have gone out of their way to protect players who cannot defend themselves from wild tackles because they have their eye on the ball – look at CalMac, he has eyes only on the ball and the thug jumped shoulder-first right into his head/face. Absolutely shocking, yet not a peep from our ‘owners. nor even from Ange who, when asked about the injuries/fouls/possible cards said simply the referee makes those decisions.

Not sure about his thinking regarding repeated over-physical fouling that goes unpunished?

  9. ONENIGHTINLISBON @ 4:56 PM,

    VINNIETHEDOG @ 5:04 PM,

    Good posts.

Tom McLaughlin posted a recommendation for a book about the young team in 90s Airdrie.

When growing up there street gangs were rife, lots of graffiti on the walls.

All to do with, the Young Foot, the Bush, the Yoboos, the Mavis Toi…

Now I moved down to England in the mid seventies and we regularly returned to visit family.

Went up one year and my scheme was full of graffiti that I hadn’t seen before, had to ask my cousin what did it mean, FTQ http://FTP...

There was a real rise in sectarian tensions when the troubles escalated in the 70s.

    Hail Hail

  10. Ernie – nipping the sectarian crap in the bud and calling out the refs are not mutually exclusive.

You’re naivety in respect to the plausibility of some egging on from strange places of our heavily policed young followers is strange, given your often stated opinions on the perceived reach and actions of nationalists/ the SNP in Scotland.

Your enthusiasm for the rebs is also mighty strange for a unionist. I suppose we are all a mess of contradictions but i do think we should try not to be. To use an ancient word phrase from this blog, the cognitive dissonance is strong in your opinions.

By the way, I’ve no problem with rebel songs or political singing – I’ve written extensively on it here and elsewhere when I used to blog fir a different site. Its the secrarian add ons I take issue with. The point of making an issue of a small problem now is to prevent it getting embedded.

    CHAIRBHOY on 23RD JANUARY 2022 6:01 PM

I grew up in the 70’s and sang many of the republican songs on the day at Celtic park.

Politics in general and Ireland in particular have moved on since then.

Wee boys standing in the North curve singing about the IRA is pathetic and should be condemned by both Celtic and the vast majority of decent supporters.

  12. fourstonecoppi on

Just heard Calmac could be out for 6 weeks…….i still feel sick to my stomach over that farce last night.

No wonder there isn’t a single MP or so called journalist on this entire island who’ll face this man of cage rattling truth.

A “left” which pines for the EU, seeks the break-up of Britain, denies biological reality, obsesses about identity politics, is not only no left at all, it dooms what it claims to stand for to the outer fringes of political struggle. It is alien to British working-class life. https://twitter.com/georgegalloway/status/1485278304705908740?s=20

  14. ONIL,

Seems like Celtic supporters songbooks were decommissioned in 1998 :)

Was the singing of Grace a breach ?

  15. Clancy axed,Celtic should be preparing dossier against half a dozen refs, and demand similar action.

  16. ERNIE LYNCH @ 5:15 PM,

Mysogynistic abuse thrown in, now that is definitely one of the protected characteristics.

  17. ONENIGHTINLISBON @ 6:05 PM,

    Spot on.

The silence from the rest of the ground told the whole story.

Celtic allow them acces to Celtic Park to do their banners etc… they can easily tell them what’s acceptable.

    Hail Hail

  19. Make no mistake here,Clancy decision, is a warning shot to ALL referees, to toe the party line, and get the Mothership the money at the end of the season. Disgraceful….can you remember the SFA acting this quickly on anything?

  20. its a scandal that every time rangers complain – a referee is removed. This is deflection – the REAL story is the Aberdeen penalty not given and a straight red card for mcgregor.

its manipulation – meanwhile Celtic just watch on!

  21. And the latest troll from the unionist vermin is

    Michael o upgeorgegalloways arse

The LRA is despicable and very Dark.

Last night was surely the last straw?

We have an Incredibly powerful Board.

    Players are commodities?

Ange is a true Father figure and he cares for his charges.

Utterly sickened by last nights allowance by that excuse of a Referee, the same as EVERY wan who has no Integrity in the fraternity.

  24. glendalystonsils on

Clancy’s demotion only serves to confirm who is running Scottish football , and it’s not the SFA .

BTW did we ever get a satisfactory reply to the letter of concerns dent to the SFA re Beaton in that ‘Morelos stamp-gate ‘ game ?

Oh that’s right , I remember Peter telling us that it had all been resolved , which is probably coded speak for ‘piss off Timmy’.

  25. The Orange Walk was always ‘water off a duck’s back’ to me as I moved into adulthood. I didn’t care a jot for those who took part and therefore couldn’t be offended. My parents, who both were of Irish immigrant stock and born in Govan, used to tell us as kids of the liberties taken by the Orangemen as they marched through their streets and passed their churches; and how some ‘toughies’ in the Catholic community used to fight back. Most of the stories were harrowing, but some quite funny.

What I did/do find nauseating & abhorrent however, was/is the inclusion & indoctrination of children and youngsters in the OO culture & ‘parades’. To me it signifies hatred being handed down from generation to generation. I have always believed that we are better than that.

Now we have an upsurge in IRA worship with sectarian add-ons amongst a significant section of our (mostly young) support, both home and away. Why is this happening and what is driving it? It certainly isn’t a desire to enhance the standing of Celtic.

We are a club “open to all’ and employ staff/players from all over the world. We have built an enviable reputation on the world-stage, both on the field of play and off, over the last fifty-years.

From my point of view it turns some reasonable people in the wider community against us. Our support and Celtic family are able to be ‘tarred with the same brush’ by those looking to ‘even up the score’ – a prime objective of the discredited Offensive Behaviour legislation.

So I ask those who indulge in this outdated behaviour, and those who defend them:

*What do you think you are achieving?

*What possible benefits are you deriving?

*What good does it do for the tens of thousands who support Celtic?

*What message does it send out to our detractors?

    ……and finally and most perplexing of all;

*What in the name of God has “joining the IRA” got to do with Celtic Football Club?

  26. All these excellent fitba players just come here to play Football.

If our Hierarchy dinnae (oh my God the video Evidence is Monumental) stop this now – Shame on them.

  27. Wan thing I noticed, there were mair Lights coming out the Directors Box against the Hibees.
