Answering tangential digs at Celtic

570

I see Celtic’s name was dragged by the media into what some low-life vandals did outside Ibrox this week – and a few years ago, for good measure.  There are low-life vandals out there, and we don’t have a way to filter them out of the Celtic support, so I‘d not dispute any of the tangential links, but vandalism like this happens all too often without media coverage.

When stories suddenly appear to be so well framed in the newspapers, you have to wonder why?  Or who is behind them?

There’s a big play underway for what, in this context, should be called Supremacy in Scotland.  Celtic have it right now and no one else is strong enough to eclipse them.  The best way to achieve this is to destabilise the club.  It’s worked, but only to an extent.

I read Paul Larkin on Hail Hail Media this morning who raises some interesting questions on what’s going on and what we should do about it, “as a collective, cannot be beaten”.  It’s hard to argue with.

We’ve got two exciting bits of Magners business for you today………..

First, if you want to win two Premium Seat tickets to the Jock Stein Stand for Sunday’s potential league winning game against Aberdeen, courtesy of main club sponsor, Magners, answer this question about our last 9-in-a-row campaign:

Against which team did Celtic win the first of their 9 consecutive titles, in 1966?

It was a famous game, settled by a famous scorer.  Email the team name IN THE SUBJECT LINE of your message, to celticquicknews@gmail.com

Competition closes at 17:00 TODAY, so you only have a few hours…..

And there’s more……  How do you fancy playing on Celtic Park in 12 days’ time?  Go to Facebook and enter this Magners competition to win a place in the end of season 7s tournament.

You get to grace the place that McGrory, Johnstone, Dalglish and Larsson did their stuff.  Do it.

Now I’ve got you in a good mood.  If you’ve a spare £1 in your metaphorical pocket, go stick it into the CQN Mary’s Meals appeal  Those CQN school kitchens in Malawi feed over 2,000 kids each day.  That’s food needed every day………

Once knew some diehard Celts from Easterhouse. They and their family were more than hospitable to me from 30 odd years ago till my last visit to them about ten years later. Wonderful , typical Celtic folk.

Billy and Pat Nolan. Anyone know them ???

Just before I go, I thought I would give one final thought on the offshore report.

I have said little (definitely little of any import) on The SFA/ The Rangers/Sevco/Oldco/EBT/Res 12 imbroglio. I am unqualified to have done so but have awaited the outcome with great interest.

I have now read the report, link below, and attachments three times, pausing only for tea and toasted cheese for sustenance. I can only see one choice to be made in going forward (assuming that the world of football apparatchiks and media don’t all turn themselves into Leverndale) and that is ..do those named and accused in the report sue or not?

They have in my opinion no other choice but to take legal action against the authors or tacitly admit to corruption and maladministration.

Perhaps others with a far greater grasp of such matters could advise if there are other options.

Anyway, if this doesn’t trigger significant actions from the football world then I struggle to see how the SFA in particular and a number of individuals can retain any credibility or reputation for honesty.

  6. Well done Liverpool . What a difference a top notch coach can make to a football club . If only . With regards to the new strip , stunning is how I would describe it . Been in some dicky positions following the celts over the years . Crush at tynecastle Wednesday night cup replay . Same v hibs . John Clark scored that night . Crush at Nottingham forest hurt in that one too . But that night with the cops on horses was the nearest ever I came to being killed . We’re up against a country here , we’re hated by them , make no mistake about that . Spoke to Bernard Ponsonby , coming out of the Ross county 1-1 game couple of weeks ago . Why don’t we employ this guy to deal with the press up here , way way to clever for the laptop loyal brown noses .

Hi Charlie, I hope this finds you well.

The reason I asked the question of Tontine Tim is purely because one of the Ferns (Raymond) is a regular pub and football pal and has been for 20 years or so. He talks regularly of Dumbarton and Bellsmyre – where I spent a few weekends myself on the odd rambling occasions. Glad to hear you are enjoying Ireland.

Tontine Tim thanks for getting back to me with that.

Re your question about renewing a season ticket? Let me explain my own thinking as best I can and I stress this is not advice or whatever to anyone else …. it is just where I am.

In the past, I have had a dozen season books which I bought for friends and family some of whom then reimbursed me. In the past few years, as people moved on etc, the number reduced to where I only bought them for me and my children. In the last year I have had just two which are for me and technically for my oldest son who has spent the year in America and so I now go with just one of my children or even on my own when I can.

Unfortunately or otherwise, there are times when I can’t get to a game at all because of other committments and duties and so there are more than a few occasions when a seat has been bought and paid for but ends up lying empty. When I can I give the tickets away but that is not always possible.

My oldest boy will be back in September and the inclination is to renew because he enjoys going and is more likely to go with a pal than my other kids all of whom are younger. When his mum and I went our separate ways, taking him to the football was our time together so in that sense the tickets and the experience that comes with the tickets is more than just about the football club, the players, the ceo, or the board and their policies. It is about us. Me and him with everything else coming second.

Now, I am not always a fan of our board nor of the views and policies as espoused by the ceo. I doubt that bothers them too much, and in truth it doesn’t keep me awake at night either. I wish different things would happen at the club, but they don’t.

However, I have always supported this club and its ethos. Because of my involvement with the foundation and my knowledge of what other fans do and have done over decades, I will always have an association and an affinity with the club and what I want the club to be. More importantly, I will always have an association and a soft spot for the fans, and would always want to have an interaction with like minded people.

Now I also have a soft spot for Partick Thistle but I don’t often go to Firhill though I feel that I should at times because I just like football.

The only reason I would not renew a season ticket would be if I think the game is fixed and that those whom I am meant to support with and through were involved in fixing it.

If Celtic were involved in a big fix, then there would be no point in boycotting Celtic Park to go to Firhill because irrespective of which team I was watching I would be watching the same fix.

I miss many games I have paid for, yet I wouldn’t really consider the notion of binning the season book to pay as you go because a) I would never get round to organising tickets on a piecemeal basis as life is just too hectic and changeable for me to be able to do that and b) because if I am going to support I quite like supporting with my money and having the ability to go or not as circumstances dictate and at the same time being able to give tickets to visitors or whoever who would like to go if they get the chance.

With regard to Res 12, we are at the stage where I don’t think that the club’s activities in that regard would be sufficient to persuade me not renew. I don’t always agree with their view, but one of the benefits of having skin in the game is that you can chip away at a point of view and hopefully peruade people to come round to your way of thinking. Hopefully, over a three year period you will get to see that the Res 12 guys have managed that.

So I would not be persuaded not to renew because of Res 12. However, if we don’t get a clear way forward in Scottish football where we can see, feel and taste change in the way it is governed, then there will come days when I am asked by my kids or by someone else to go and do something else and at that time, if I am as disillussioned as I am now with the governance of football, then the season tickets at Celtic park will go and there will be nothing that Celtic can do about it.

That decision may well be hastened if the playing and business policies at the club do not take a turn which is more in line with my own views as I will not pay to watch poor football, bad management, no proper goveranance and little business imagination and a poor offering to fans or customers.

My custom and time is for sale but only to an extent, and if I feel it is taken for granted and that i can enjoy a better time, better company and have a better laugh elsewhere while doing something and supporting something I believe in, then I will do it.

However, Celtic – even an imperfectly run Celtic — is worth supporting. More importantly, it is worth trying to change and influence if you can, and is worth enjoying when and while you can.

As a season ticket holder, and a reluctant shareholder, I can come on here and say “Hey here is my view and I am entitled to air that view because I support. By all means disagree with me, call me an arse and vote me down, but I have paid my dues and so I can cast my vote.” I can then accept a contrary opinion or if I feel deeply about it I can walk away.

I did walk away for a period in the 80’s and instead I could be found at Holm Park Yoker on a Saturday instead of at Paradise. That was a perosnal point of view and a stance taken at the time. I don’t regret taking it either.

I hear and read all you say about boycotting games and depriving the club of funds, I get it, understand it, sympathise with the idealogy behind it and fully get the tactic, but I prefer to have the ability to turn up like a bad penny and having paid the price of admission to then push the club and its PLC board to better things.

I may not fully support some of the people involved or what they do, but then they are no more Celtic than I am and while they might be paid and hold a title, I go to support something far greater than any individual with poor business judgement.

But I stress, Res 12 will not be my reason for turning on my heel because Res 12 rolls on and it is a train others, perhaps belatedly to a certain extent, are jumping on board to take the ride to the end.

I hope that long ramble makes sense.

However I have a real sense of walls beginning to crumble. The offshore game report issued tonight is stunning in its comprehensive and dispassionate dissection of the entire DOS/EBT story. Some serious feet are being held to the fire. In addition Ann Pettifor, a very serious financial analyst has picked it up.

Ill be briefer than BRTH (the only guy I can be) your question is based on a mistaken premise. We know exactly what the hurdles are and more important how to negotiate them with Celtic’s help.

Will I renew? Not in a bent game. See The Offshore Game Report. That was my position when that mob disappeared. I have no desire to watch referees etc make decisions based on the cost to TRFC if they make the right one.

At one point coins started getting thrown in their direction – nothing major, but they were thrown. Then an orange (bizarrely) hit one of the horses on the side. At that point the polis moved their horses into the middle of the street and then galloped the horses through the crowd from behind. Madness. Luckily for us we avoided the charge as it started just down from where we were standing. I understand if the polis felt they had to move from where they had been standing but to gallop down a packed street like that was the most irresponsible thing they could have done.
