At least one club will be supported through and through

1118

I can’t tell you how many statements I’ve read from those trying to bring down Newco Rangers (bonne chance) but not one comes near to approaching the key question: what can they offer the the men and women who own shares in Newco to convince them to accommodate their future aspirations?

Threats, intimidation and blackmail are all possible incentives, but no one has actually put a case forward which would compensate the investment made by the shareholders who, let’s remember, own all club assets.

An enormous assumption appears to have been made that hedge funds and various Easdales will capitulate and simply walk away and sign their paid-for assets over to a group who are regularly abusive towards them.  It’s like 2012 all over again, when parts of the world assumed HMRC would capitulate and agree to a CVA for Oldco, despite all genuine evidence (i.e. published policy) indicating otherwise.

Game Theorists would have a ball with this scenario.  Shareholders are being offered a choice, hand over your assets to a hostile opponent or attempt to continue with a vastly reduced business.  The former option should not be taken seriously.

Question is, where does this particular game end?  It’ll not be in an outcome satisfactory to many of those dreaming of ‘competing with Celtic’ anytime soon.

This mind-set should be familiar.  It’s the same one which blamed Celtic, or small-minded small clubs, the SPL and/or SFA, blamed anyone, in fact, apart from those who endorsed years of overspend at Rangers, for their eventual demise.

Walking headlong into unsustainable debt is no different than walking headlong into a conflict with hedge funds who would sell your valued acre for landfill rather than be held to ransom.

I’ll renew my season tickets tonight (still annoyed I didn’t do so in time for the free ticket draw).  Whatever happens in the wider scheme of Scottish football, one club will be supported ‘through and through’.

I can only assume you are not a football fan, never mind a Celtic fan.

Ask mightytim how ‘beautiful’ the legislation has been.

If you have a camera in your face or are herded in a group going to a football match you will change your tune.

Clearly you won’t be going to one any time soon. I am sure when you do the legislation will be gone and you will be able to go to a match without feeling like a criminal.

WILLIE Groves was an essential member of Celtic’s first competitive side, scoring 16 times in 18 games during two spells at the club. He was undoubtedly the first Celtic hero.

Controversy never seemed to be far away from Groves. He was accused of taking bungs while at Hibs before the game turned professional.

In 1887 he won the Scottish Cup with the Leith club, one of only two in their history. Groves was the first player to be signed for £100 (from West Brom to Aston Villa) and was one of the most charismatic and versatile players of his day. He also played a major role in helping West Brom win the FA Cup in 1892 and helping Aston Villa securing the league in 1894.

Andy Groves, 42, explains what led him to solve the mystery of his final resting place. “He was an exceptional talent who was aware of his own worth but alas his life ended in poverty and illness. The graveyard where he is buried is in some disarray and the location of his burial has been something of an enigma.

I read on the Celtic Graves forum that he was buried in Newington Cemetery, Edinburgh. They had tried to find the grave but unfortunately didn’t locate it. With the help of a genealogist I was able to clear up some confusion over his date of birth.

“I also found his headstone but according to the forum he’s in an unmarked plot which I’ve also found. It’s a sad sight and in need of maintenance. This is a player who played such an important role in the history of Celtic, Hibs and also in English football.

“I know that Celtic Graves do a lot of good work in this area, perhaps with some support from Celtic and possibly Hibs it can be rectified.”

The son of Irish parents and christened Patrick William Groves, he was born in Hutchesontown, Glasgow on August 20, 1868. The centre-forward played in many Celtic firsts. There was an outstanding scoring consistency in the club’s inaugural Scottish Cup (1888-89) run which would allow the 20-year-old to find the net on no less than 10 occasions during that competition.

It was no embarrassment that the fledging team were runners-up in the final to Third Lanark. In 1890 three days after his 22nd birthday the well-built player took the field for the ‘Bould Bhoys’ in their first Scottish league match against Hearts, confidently scoring twice in a 5-0 rout.

A fortnight later his status as a Celtic hero was sealed in a fresh Scottish Cup campaign. The opposition this time was Rangers, the first time the clubs would be competing against each other for meaningful honours and the birth of the famous Glasgow rivalry is evident from a Scottish Sport report in September 1890.

“When Groves scored the goal, T. Maley (brother of Willie), who was umpiring, waved his flag in jubilation. The Rangers players stared in blank amazement, the Celtic players shook hands effusively, the stands rose bareheaded to a man cheering vociferously, the crowds lining the railing did much the same thing, and the noise that little manoeuvre of Groves evoked could have been heard at Ibrox Park; it rose and swelled to one ground-note of triumph that bore in its tone the delighted response of 10,000 thankful hearts.”

The Scottish international’s signing from West Brom to Aston Villa continues to keep Groves in the headlines, the most recent example was when Gareth Bale singed for Real Madrid. Whenever a new record breaking transfer hits the media circuit you’ll find mention of Willie Groves because he was the game’s earliest entertainer with a jaw-dropping price on his head.

As the first £100 player part of the fee was a fine from the English FA after Villa, in modern parlance, tapped up the player, who had been a target for Everton twice. The subject even found its way onto University Challenge in 2010.

A vibrant character who was loved by the fans, in terms of Celtic he was perhaps the Frank McAvennie of his day. ‘Darlin’ Willie Groves’ was how Hibs fans referred to the player and it remains a point of aggravation that they lost their star to Celtic (twice).

He returned to Easter Road and played in the 1896 Scottish Cup final, losing out to Hearts. It remains the only final to be played outside of Glasgow.

Poignantly Groves would finish his days playing for Celtic in 1896. He retired from the game after developing Tuberculosis and died in Edinburgh on February 13, 1898 aged only 39.

I’ll leave the last words to an obituary published in the Glasgow Observer which described him as “tall, sinewy and graceful on the ball, his work was beautifully close, artful and deceptive. He was a picturesque figure, a sort of Romeo in the sport with his raven locks and classic-cut features. His career in all its varied spheres is one of the most romantic, and his personality will long remain as one of the most unique in British football.”

I think the revenue raising potential of a membership scheme would be considerable by providing the sort of information to allow Celtic to provide different levels of service to different types of supporter and introduce smart rewards based on such matters as you outline.

Traditionally ST money is what clubs rely on to pay the bills. It comes in up front and is not result or performance related. The idea of receiving regular income monthly that might suddenly stop is one football clubs would rather not consider.

However whilst there are areas where support can become conditional there is nevertheless I think enough hard core support that will stick with the Celtic through thick and thin to start to think differently.

If you look in later and BRTH has looked in watch out for his views on the matter.

About 4 years ago I approached Celtic with my ideas for a Membership Scheme. I was not an ST holder at the time, my joy was watching my 2 boys and a girl playing every weekend.

When asked by PL why I was meeting him and was not an ST holder my response was that I wanted to pay to support Celtic in a way that suited my circumstances and it was Celtic’s job to find that way.

As it turned out I spent a bit of the season in the sun over winter and the OST (which I suggested to Celtic ) fell in nicely with what was in Celtic’s immediate control to deliver.

Extending it however is going to mean arguing a case with others, which makes the outcome difficult to predict but is not a reason for not exploring the possibilities, the barriers and how to overcome them.

There is a lot more to that story, lots more, before we went on that trip to France we played in Hartlepool, against some police mob, we beat them. Around that time China invaded Vietnam, we were ordered down to observe, that’s when I got arrested by my own, and we got as far as the Bay of Biscay when China said “feck it, another time” and went home for tea, so I got dumped in France.

And everywhere I went I took two things, always, always, my Rosary Beads and my Celtic top and before I knew it my mates were arriving from across the channel and we were playing football.

What did I get arrested for, well after we beat those police in England I skipped the function and went to the post office to get the mail, and I had to wait and wait and wait, as was my duty to my mates, but eventually it turned up and if anybody has ever served then they’ll know, next to breathing, nothing is more important than is the mail.

Only I was late back and I was accused and convicted of drinking on duty, and encore my God is my judge I never took a drop.

I hate it when people are falsely accused and convicted and sentenced and stigmatised. Maybe that’s a wee part of why I hate the present Celtic board. And I never use the word ‘hate’ flippantly.

Whether he meant it or not I think that Easdale has just had his Gerald Ratner moment.

Even the most deluded of their fans will now be wondering whether paying for their season ticket up front now might be pouring the money down a drain and so , unless they are monumentally stupid ( I know…) , the only logical thing to do is hold off and then pay per game.

The resultant loss of season ticket money , the season ticket money being the only straw for them to clutch on to, will deliver Easdale’s prediction.

I’m not sure just what the take up has been but the fact I was asked to renew suggests that it is paying it’s way but I think it has not been a rip snorting success. More on a slow burn.

However for those overseas who pay to watch Celtic and can afford the difference between the OST and a straight Celtic TV subscription it is a perfect way to support from afar.

Numbers might go up with Sky being less accessible in Spain because of satellite “footprint” changes.

  14. Cadizzy

Some coincidence that. I posted earlier about being careful not to make a typo with that word, and now you remind me of the old Chardon club’s early ‘ social messaging’ technique. As for George. . . Now who could hold a grudge against him?

Your description of the differences in the students within the Mod Langs building, depending on what language or languages they were studying, is spot-on. The French, cheese and some wine, while, in Spanish, we preferred (God I feel old!) discos, though there was never much dancing, as that would have meant having to leave the bar for too long!

To have landed among as friendly, and many of them, funny, people was a great slice of luck, I have always thought. As a tribute, I tried my best to foster the work hard, play even harder, philosophy in the place I ended up working.

I miss those days something awful!

That was kind of you, thank you.

I don’t want you to agree with me all the time, I can’t see it in me to agree with everybody all the time, I LIKE the arguments, and when people have been drinking, because with the drink and the emotion and the blood pressure you get to see, not the point collectors, but the passion, the passion, the meaning of the game of football.

I can’t be bothered with professional debaters. I’d rather slurp it out with the bar drunk.

But I would like you, and everybody else too, everything I post has a point, and in my heart and my mind, every single thing I post, has the good of Celtic in mind.

(of course there are one or two wee exceptions to that)

Greenpinata I am no different to you man, take my faith and my blood family out of my life and all I have is Celtic. Some people might say that is sad. Well I’ve no problem with that, they just haven’t known what I, and hundreds just the same as me, only with different names, have loved.

That above all else is what we’ll always have in common, our love, our compassion, our sincerity, and our smiles, most important of all – our smiles because they are dependant.

Where they not on an incubator before or was that a proposal before they died and were resurrected. Actually if they die this time will Dave King remove the soul and join it up with a different body at Hampden? Will they die and go to purgatory or should that be limbo because they are so young.
