Atletico, Malaga, “breathtaking hypocrisy”

I was pleased Hearts won last night as all season I’ve been telling people we will win the league by double figures. Dropping the ball on Wednesday night put that in jeopardy but the gap is back to 12 points ahead of the visit of Motherwell on Sunday.

Ronny is likely to deploy more first choice players for his final game as Celtic manager against a Motherwell team who staged a remarkable recovery after a dreadful 2015, which would have seem them relegated if it weren’t for the huge gap between Premiership and Championship.

It looked like farewell from Emilio on Wednesday but you have to expect a few more will possibly make their final competitive appearances in the hoops this weekend.

I see a “Five-in-a-row but Peter Lawwell just cannot win” article in The Scotsman. Aye, fair enough, but the article ploughs into the Resolution 12 guys, and accuses other Celtic fans of “breathtaking hypocrisy”.

It appears to imply Financial Fair Play rules are not applied elsewhere in Europe (citing Atletico Madrid), so there should be no issues with the rules not applying to Rangers in 2011. I don’t follow Spanish club licencing too closely, but you will remember Malaga being banned by Uefa for having “overdue payables” to the Spanish tax authorities.

The rules ARE applied, clubs are banned from European competition for overdue payables.

I’ve been in touch with both the Res 12 guys and Celtic on this matter this morning (they continue to work together on a daily basis). It’s fair to say both robustly rejected the tone in the article.  I don’t know how this matter will end, but it will not be decided at Hampden, or in a newspaper office – cards marked one more time.

THE controversial law aimed at stamping out sectarianism around football games is set to be abolished, after every opposition party yesterday backed its repeal.

The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act 2012 (OBFA) now looks likely to be an early casualty of the SNP losing its overall majority at Holyrood.

Keen to flex their muscles as the main opposition, the Conservatives said they would ensure parliamentary time was dedicated to the issue in coming weeks and would back legislation to scrap the “unfair and unworkable” law.

Labour MSP James Kelly, who announced plans for a Member’s Bill to repeal the OBFA in January, confirmed he would move to secure the Act’s removal from the statute book.

The LibDems and Greens, who stood on manifestos backing repeal, supported the plans.

It leaves the SNP out-numbered 65-63 on the issue at Holyrood.

Some SNP MSPs are also sceptical of the law, including Richard Lyle, who last year said it was “too wide sweeping in approach and doesn’t work in practice as well as it should or could”.

The OBFA was created after a spate of violent incidents in the 2010-11 football season, including 35 arrests and a clash between club managers at an Old Firm game.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon was targeted with parcel bombs and live bullets in the mail, and lunged at by a Hearts fan at Tynecastle.

The SNP rapidly pushed the OBFA through parliament, creating new offences around inciting religious hatred and offensive chanting associated with football.

Only the SNP voted for it in December 2011 – it was opposed by all other parties, who complained the legislation was “railroaded” using the SNP’s then majority.

Football fans claim the law unfairly singles them out for blame and punishment.

Earlier this year it emerged there were only 79 convictions in 2014/15 under the legislation, and even the government admitted conviction rates were “very small”.

Scottish Tory chief whip John Lamont said: “Having prevented the SNP from gaining an overall majority, we can now use the powers of the parliament to scrap some of the bad laws they passed in the last one. There are proposals to bring forward legislation to scrap the OBFA. We believe there is a majority in the new parliament to end this absurd law.”

Kelly said: “The place to tackle sectarianism is in our classrooms and communities. Instead, the SNP passed a law based on chasing headlines rather than finding solutions.

“Labour will work with other parties in the Scottish Parliament to repeal the OBFA. The law has become a symbol of the SNP’s arrogance in government.”

A LibDem spokesman said: “The Act was pushed through when the SNP had a bulldozer majority. Now they have lost seats they have to listen to other voices. After repeal the Scottish Government should instead take forward the recommendations of the Independent Advisory Group on Tackling Sectarianism.”

A Scottish Green spokesman added: “Such efforts have our support.”

Dr Stuart Waiton, senior sociology lecturer at Abertay University and author of Snob’s Law, a book on the OBFA, told the Sunday Herald it was “arguably the most authoritarian piece of legislation in modern times in Britain. That you can go to prison for five years for being offensive at a football match is insane.”

However he is sceptical there will be real change. “It certainly seems that opposition politicians are prepared to be opportunistic and oppose the law now. The main problem is that no politician is prepared to oppose all the laws that mean fans can be arrested for singing offensive songs and that’s what we need, a revitalisation of basic liberal principles of freedom of speech. Unfortunately things are going the other way and we are seeing more and more people claiming ‘offence’ and more police time spent chasing people who are guilty of nothing more than speech crimes. I’m not holding my breath.”

An SNP spokeman said: “This legislation is about taking firm action against sectarianism and other offensive behaviour, and it speaks volumes about Labour’s priorities that they see teaming up with the Tories to try and scrap such laws as the most important issue facing Scotland. Opinion polls show this measure is widely supported by people across Scotland, and the public will take a dim view of the opposition using this for political games.”

Waiton going a bit over the top there.

Every single non SNP MSP voted against the legislation. It’s hardly fair to accuse them of being opportunistic now.

Interesting to see the cult spokesman chuntering on about Labour teaming up with the Tories to repeal the Act.

Just wait and see who supports them when they have to get their budget through Holyrood.

Did I just detect a Celtic “supporter” hoping for a Motherwell victory today? Sad. Very sad.

Of course, in any match any team may be beaten and we have no divine right to win. But hope the bhoys put on a great performance and win comfortably today. HH

  8. I know it means hee-haw but I’ll vouch for ALASDAIR MACLEAN every day of the week, every week of the month, every month of the year, every year until I’m gone.

Mags: without dissenters there is only ignorant bliss and coffee does not have a scent.

I don’t have a great deal of time to squander on myself of late, that and a poxy wi-fi render me a virtual stranger to these pages whenst I am working. But I am not a stranger. I am a Celtic Supporter and I am family and so, so, proud to be.

A Belfast Irishman introduced me to Mary’s Meals about six years ago. It is up there with my top five CQN best moments, alongside meeting Kano/Ramie/SMB/The Bhoy from the Village/ol’tim etc, the Golf days that I’ve never attended/the charity and intimate compassion/the people who populate this place.

I never asked Bobby Murdochs’ Curled up’s to post on my behalf, he did that all by himself. He is one of the good guys when it comes to unfortunate needs, again alongside the likes of Aldo/Pablo/magraininspain/tommytwiststommyturns/Gordon/and all the rest of those who don’t speak more than they actually do. I pray my good that they are blessed but I think it is a prayer too late because he beat me to my wishes.

Time is precious, we, none of us, don’t have infinite time in which to make ourselves proud of ourselves and to have others view us with respect and affection. I try not to squander that limited and most precious resource talking about making a difference I humbly try in poverty to give.

Mary’s Meals was conceived by two brothers sharing a pint. Today it feeds 1.2 million kids. I don’t know what religion (if any) those two brothers were, I don’t know what football team (if any) they support… but I do know they are Scottish and I take a selfish pride that I too share their nation of birth. They are Scottish and they behave like Scotsmen do. The world looks on in awe and wonder at those two brothers and what they have achieved, and the unquantifiable number of smiles they have gifted, and the world legends them Scotsmen.

I need the help of Scotsmen, or any other nationality too, I like all peoples.

I don’t have enough tears to wash away the memories of the innocent Children that Mary’s Meals keeps alive. I do have enough blisters though and today I’m going to go and add to my collection.

Raw floating sewerage has no right to play in an orphanages’ playground. Dirty work but somebody has to do it.

If you want to be just like Mary’s Meals founders you can do so too. It is your life, your decision, you that will make the difference, you that the child in need will never meet nor never know. Who needs fame? Who needs hunger and a soiled mattress and sewerage sun bathing in the garden….

    Who?

    Bobby… you are some man.

If you read back your post. You suggest, not for the first time, that Mark McGhee is likely to hand Ronny’s a**e on a plate. Now, as I said, there is always a possibility that Motherwell may, though I hope not, win.

Your post cerainly indicates that were Motherwell to win you would be using it as another stick in your constant diatribes against the Celtic Board.

I understand that supporters have complaints against the actions of the Board but, IMO, you use not just past failures on the field but conflate these with possible reverses in the future.

    ###

The repeal is on the cards because there has been an election in which the nats lost their majority at Holyrood, so repeal is therefore possible.

Previously repeal would not have been possible because none of the nats would have been allowed to vote against the party line. Nat MSPs, MPs and Cooncillors are not allowed to criticise party policy or colleagues. A bit like the Moonies.

In any case this legislation doesn’t particularly affect the huns. Their sectarian behaviour was already illegal under the pre existing legislation. That’s why the Act was introduced. To even things up.
