Backlash expected from Celtic

413

After Tuesday night, you might feel a slight sting. That’s pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps.  Continue to bank Premiership points, mature as a squad and grow the club, because a year from now when we’re kicking it in the Champions League, you’re gonna’ say ‘We’re progressing’.

A week ago I suggested a case could be made that the game at Ross County was our most important before the international break.  I know that game has already faded into memory, but argument stands.  Champions League football is everything to Celtic – our biggest earner, best way to attract players, the sugar in fans’ tea, we need to be there and we need to improve results when we get there.

We are a significant way off the highs of Gordon Strachan’s Champions League campaigns (yes, some people were always unhappy), and we need to redouble efforts to return to that level, but until then, the importance of winning at the weekend can never be overstated.

Our coefficient monkeys did their best last night to make sure Celtic continue to reach the Champions League in future seasons.  Still a lot of work to do before we can assume anything, but fair play to them – every club in the league must do their best for Scotland’s perennial champions.

While Celtic legs and minds will be weary after our humbling in Madrid, Aberdeen flew back from Greece overnight after a respectable draw with POAK, and will travel south tomorrow ahead of their game at Celtic Park on Sunday.  Barry Robson is making progress but the international break surely cannot come soon enough for a squad which is far lighter than Celtic’s.

I expect a backlash from Celtic.

First off – respect to Aberdeen for last night’s performance and result.

Similar to Union Berlin the previous night, they went up against a team with a better pedigree on their own patch, ran themselves into the ground … and got a point and some welcome cash.

Recalling how flat we were at Easter Road after an incredible effort against Atletico … I can’t help feel Aberdeen will feel the same turning round in 66 hours.

Plus a longish flight home reducing genuine recovery time further.

The key is to go after them early.

Fatigued players don’t automatically tire at the end of a game.

Rather, they subconsciously tell themselves they’ll be tired later … and drop the tempo early on.

    Respect to Aberdeen for Thursday.

    Get intae them Celtic.

    SAINT STIVS @ 1:25 PM,

    May 2022…

    Three transfer windows

Or does a head of recruitment need time to bed in, two or three seasons maybe!?

    Hail Hail

    —————

Without knowing the actual kpis for a chief of first team scouting, I have to think that anyone coming in already has extensive knowledge via analytics software and databases that most likely are the same for thew top clubs, ie they dont build thier own systems they buy something off the shelf.

so with this in mind, and coming from the city group, ML must have tranferabble (sic) knowledge to hit the ground running.

now when the manager says i need x.

MLs department must be able to say here are 20 options, lets do the analyitcs, see who is availble, see what the price is, and so on and so on.

first team readiness did not seem to me anyways to be the criteria for those 3 windows with the exception of two or three.

Ange told us, get used to more and more turnover of staff, try them, buy them, move them on when interest comes, the only recent known exception has been matt o’riley.

we are miles away from building teams for long term stability.

i had a wee head scratching moment at the weekend as we searched out long term players from history.

james, callum and broonie , with lustig and biton are our modern day long serving players.

but what struck me, i bet more players played for celtic in the last 23 years, than did in the previous 60.

i never got round to it, but i wonder what the average lenght of stay at our club is now ? 3 seasons maybe ?

my least favourite saying in business we are “in the war for talent”, utter tosh offcourse, but it is relevant in football more than anywhere else.

    that was a wee meander,

    https://celtsarehere.com/new-eighth-largest-celtic-shareholder/

This is welcome but the article does not mention what percentage of shares the Trust now owns as the “eighth largest shareholder”.

    A fraction of 1%.

From previous discussions on the topic, and with no disrespect intended to the Trust ….

    … progress is too slow.

With absolutely no data to support my premise … there has to be at least a 10% bloc out there (consolidated voting rights if not purchased shares) to go after ?

  4. Catching up after a busy night/morning and I notice a few Celts annoyed at Sevco getting a home win.

For me, as long as they don’t win a euro trophy I am good with them picking up points / having to play more games and chipping into the co-efficient as long as its not taking food off our table as it were.

That didn’t register on the bad news radar this morning – though the rumoured injury to Maeda concerns me (I posted on here that it looked like he hurt himself trying to not injure the player during his “red card challenge”). Also a little concerned by news Maddison is out into next year with a bad one. Here’s hoping Ange doesn’t view MOR as a cheap gap filler until he returns.

Looking forward to the Dons at the weekend, got seats on the supporters bus again so might even get a cheeky wee drink!

  5. SAINT STIVS @ 2:10 PM,

Yes, you’d expect the recruitment tools to be in place or at least up and running in jig time…

Read somewhere we haven’t signed a player that’s had an impact on the first team since January 2022.

That sounds about right for me.

Of course development players are necessary and in our situation completely key to our success.

Yet they need time to “develop”, so the squad mix is hugely important.

Abada and O’Riley were two good development players we signed and their progress has been managed very well; form, injuries, etc are always going to come into it but not selling Matt was one of the highlights of the summer window.

It appears things did change towards the end of Ange’s tenure but until that time he was doing very well.

BR having to run a UCL campaign by being given players to develop was as blinkered as it was disrespectful.

We must hope changes are afoot.

    that article is utter guff.

the trust has no influence at all on the owners of the club, a mere irritant at the agm’s.

allthough being in rude financial health, we are effectively back to the days of dynastic families owning celtic.

    Industry investors own another 4%

collectively they have never voted against a board resolution ever.

no one ever goes against what DD wants, even though he is not a majority share holder.

  7. SS

Desmond was allowed to increase his shareholding to what it is by asking other shareholders, otherwise he would have had to buy the whole shareholding, we are no better off now in terms of fans having a greater say in club affairs than when the Kelly’s etc owned the club, this aspect of McCann’s legacy has been a failure in that respect.

  8. i agree.

and not forgetting lindsell train – 12% owners. the quote is from an interview in 2019

    ————–

The other football stock in the global portfolio is Celtic, which despite being a much smaller club commands a huge amount of its domestic market.

“Celtic has that same position in Scotland – a very narrow, niche market where the media revenues are tiny,” Lindsell said.

“But there is a diaspora of potential Celtic supporters from Scottish catholics around the world that follow the club vicariously,” he said. “If ever Celtic were to tap into that supporter base more, or could morph their media rights from just the Scottish Premiership into something bigger, then the revenues of the company could double or triple very quickly.”

While there is nothing to suggest that the club will materially change in the short term, it is now run by businessmen who will likely monetise the club more successfully moving forward, he added.

“So nothing much is going to change with Celtic in terms of the revenues it earns today if it doesn’t change its league structure – and there are no prospects of it doing so as far as I can see,” he said.

“But I wouldn’t be surprised if the agenda from the owners over the very long term is to get things changed. If that was ever a likely event the value of the franchise would be enormous.”
