Backlash expected from Celtic

413

After Tuesday night, you might feel a slight sting. That’s pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps.  Continue to bank Premiership points, mature as a squad and grow the club, because a year from now when we’re kicking it in the Champions League, you’re gonna’ say ‘We’re progressing’.

A week ago I suggested a case could be made that the game at Ross County was our most important before the international break.  I know that game has already faded into memory, but argument stands.  Champions League football is everything to Celtic – our biggest earner, best way to attract players, the sugar in fans’ tea, we need to be there and we need to improve results when we get there.

We are a significant way off the highs of Gordon Strachan’s Champions League campaigns (yes, some people were always unhappy), and we need to redouble efforts to return to that level, but until then, the importance of winning at the weekend can never be overstated.

Our coefficient monkeys did their best last night to make sure Celtic continue to reach the Champions League in future seasons.  Still a lot of work to do before we can assume anything, but fair play to them – every club in the league must do their best for Scotland’s perennial champions.

While Celtic legs and minds will be weary after our humbling in Madrid, Aberdeen flew back from Greece overnight after a respectable draw with POAK, and will travel south tomorrow ahead of their game at Celtic Park on Sunday.  Barry Robson is making progress but the international break surely cannot come soon enough for a squad which is far lighter than Celtic’s.

I expect a backlash from Celtic.

Armistace day and two minutes silence at the cenotaph, and the laying of laying of wreaths by the establishment.

A right wing mob emboldend by the home secretary, the daughter of indian migrants, who hates migrants.

to protect the cenotaph while chanting “english till i die” , the irony is lost on them all.

A pro-palestine peace march demonisied by the home secretary with a particular rhetoric of how very unbritish to do this on armistance day, and how very dare they the met police allow such a thing to happen on this most solemn of days ……………

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

  13. “ALEX’S ANGLE: LET’S GET UGLY, BRENDAN”

This is probably the most important article in the aftermath of our 6-0 gubbing by Atletico. Apparently there were no comments so no discussion about the issue of neutralizing the most dangerous opponents, its history and the advice given. This is a pity.

The thing that stuck out for me was that it was clear that Griezmann and Morata were real threats and the best tactic would have been to try somehow to neutralize them. This wasn’t attempted and of the 8 goals scored by Atletico over the two matches Griezmann and Morata scored 3 each!

Alex Gordon, the author of the piece, mentions that Big Jock specifically set the team up to neutralize Josef Masopust who was considered the greatest threat when took his players to Prague on April 25 1967 with Celtic 3-1 ahead from the first leg and a mere 90 minutes from a place in the European Cup Final the following .month. It succeeded and the rest is history.

Wim Wenders did much the same to neutralize Brian Laudrup and prevent a blue 10 IAR.

It makes sense to do this especially playing away against really good teams in the CL and most of them are. It’s no use complaining about the quality of our players compared to the opposition’s, VAR, the referee, the Board etc etc if the manager simply refuses to adopt an appropriate tactic.

Good afternoon all from the Montesol bar, old town. Great place, nobody speaks English. Me anaw. 😂😂

  15. I see THE BHOYS group are boycotting the game tomorrow in support of the Green Brigade.

Brilliant. Their foul-mouthed, sectarian chanting won’t be missed. In fact, can we ban that shower and bring the GB back?

  16. Brilliant..

But the idea of a list is you add to it ya bunch a numptys.

Great places we are posting from far and near but the best yet is Timbhoy163 where did you hide the phone or tablet to get it into the Jile..🤣

  17. ILJASB @ 2:03 PM,

Griezmann and Morata are world class players with all due respect the idea that BR didn’t think to “neutralize” them is absurd.

Steve Clarke tried to neutralize Morata with a much better defensive team and failed.

    We do need better players.

Saying that, the players we have are learning from the coaching staff and getting more experience all the time, that’s got to be a ➕️

    Hail Hail

  18. Ange not happy. 1-0 up after 3 minutes. Has just lost back-to-back games for the first time in British football. First Wolves goal was world class.

Interesting article from Alex Gordon especially since he’s had to go back to Jock Stein for ‘tactical’ Celtic.

There were CQN posters, and Celtic supporters everywhere calling for pragmatism facing Griezmann and company, before the first game at

    Parkhead and again in Madrid.

Brendan Rodgers is on record i haven’t looked it up again, but when asked about his previous particularly ’bad result’ in the CL he pooed, pooed pragmatic football, in the same way Ange Postecoglu did for two years. The basis of his argument is that we play to our strengths, which in any Celtic supporter’s eyes has never been pragmatically.

Though never with defensively built teams , McNeill, Hay, Macari ,Brady, Burns Mowbray, Deila, Strachan, Lennon and any managers I’ve missed, all tried some form of ‘neutralising’ with mixed results, at best.

Who are we to tell Brendan that there is another way and hands up for who man marks Griezmann?

Celtic accommodated BHOYS where it used to have a family section, what a waste of time and money that was.
