Backlash expected from Celtic

413

After Tuesday night, you might feel a slight sting. That’s pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps.  Continue to bank Premiership points, mature as a squad and grow the club, because a year from now when we’re kicking it in the Champions League, you’re gonna’ say ‘We’re progressing’.

A week ago I suggested a case could be made that the game at Ross County was our most important before the international break.  I know that game has already faded into memory, but argument stands.  Champions League football is everything to Celtic – our biggest earner, best way to attract players, the sugar in fans’ tea, we need to be there and we need to improve results when we get there.

We are a significant way off the highs of Gordon Strachan’s Champions League campaigns (yes, some people were always unhappy), and we need to redouble efforts to return to that level, but until then, the importance of winning at the weekend can never be overstated.

Our coefficient monkeys did their best last night to make sure Celtic continue to reach the Champions League in future seasons.  Still a lot of work to do before we can assume anything, but fair play to them – every club in the league must do their best for Scotland’s perennial champions.

While Celtic legs and minds will be weary after our humbling in Madrid, Aberdeen flew back from Greece overnight after a respectable draw with POAK, and will travel south tomorrow ahead of their game at Celtic Park on Sunday.  Barry Robson is making progress but the international break surely cannot come soon enough for a squad which is far lighter than Celtic’s.

I expect a backlash from Celtic.

for those with an interest in such things.

very good watch each and every episode.

SAINT STIVS, agree that it was generally a good watch, but thought he didn’t deal with An Gorta Mor very well at all. Glossed over the fact that during the worse years of the blight Ireland, which was part of the United Kingdom at that time, was a food exporting country while hundreds of thousands of its citizens (subjects?) were literally starving to death. Thought that was poor and undermined the impact of that episode of the programme.

  2. Does everyone on here forget they were young and sang songs that some felt we should not have, songs of oppression, Brittish Empire, freedom blah blah why all this pontificating over young men who think they are trying through song to right wrongs?

It is our job as a community and society in general to try and guide young people.

Or are we so quick to discard young folk to the scrap heep.

If you scroll down the page a photo of Brendan, then scroll down further to the Celtic legends including big Jock and wee Bertie

The photo of Brendan reminds me of the photos of Arthur Scargil in my parents Daily Mail during the miners strike in the eighties.

  4. Chairbhoy- I rarely read the stories on CQN. I find Alex Gordon still has a tabloid still he hasn’t managed to dump. The articles are rarely informative or entertaining. We’d be as well just linking direct to the Record.

I don’t doubt Alex’s Celtic credentials or his experience of Scottish football figures but all I am reading is “lighthouse thinking”, governed by the emotions of the last result. It’s the kind of schtick that Hugh Keevins pushes but it does undermine the “Not Lazy Journalism” tag.

We can all be a wee bit guilty of drifting there. When we had WGS- we thought the football was too boring. When we had Ange the accusation team was the team was too open.

FWIW- I find Brendan’s style a lot less exciting and enjoyable than Ange’s but I think he is responding to the fanbase in trying to make us less porous. Overall, I think it’s far too early to condemn him as he hasn’t had time to make the team wholly his. I know many fans want Brendan to be more responsible for signings but I worry that this are is the weakest part of his skillset and it could do with a sounding board.

Even though I know Shortie is a refuge for washed up Huns, I still find it deeply sinister that Bobby Madden now appears on it with increasing regularity.

  6. SFtBs @ 4:08 PM,

Agreed – it was ILJASB that mentioned it but checking it out was a bit of a waste of time.

BR with the contorted Boat Race* caught my attention though:)

It was an unfair appraisal really, in the second half against Athleti at Celtic Park the team was running out of steam.

BR was pragmatic and went five at the back, we did concede but it could have been worse and by the end, AM were running the clock down for a draw, no mean feat

Before the two ties, most would have settled for a point.

Ange was fairly unique in his outlook and had players and a set up for all out Angeball, now with the players and systems developing should be much better tactically.

One thing you can say about Ange, he knew how to identify and bring in a player, we need to get back to doing just that.

  9. Despite only drawing yesterday with Hanover

St Pauli pull further away from rivals Hamburg at the top of B2 in Germany as their rivals lost today to Holstein Kiel 4-2.

I can’t begin to imagine how the bitter Hamburg fans would react if St Pauli went up this season and their favourites didn’t after 6 years of trying.

    So funny.

  10. Every opponent tries to shut Griezman down. With very limited success.Used to be a very decent striker, now one of the worlds best MF.

  11. Sunak statement almost equally apportioning blame today beggars belief.

I am not holding my breath that Starmer will say anything different mind you.

He had some top tracks back in the day. Seem to remember Flashback had a funny wee video. Off to check.

  15. No great surprise at Dens today. Dundee had been going well with a team and formation. Totally changed it versus the Hun, happily got gubbed then put the proper team back on today. Not paranoid ravings, check the facts . The fix is on . COVID season II.

  16. So now we have Celtic supporters coming on here complaining about Premiership teams trying too hard against us.

What happened to “We need stronger opposition in Scotland if we are to progress in Europe”?

If you’re upset about St Mirren giving us a hard game then losing 0-4 at Dundee, I’m afraid football ain’t for you.

Try underwater tiddlywinks. It’s perfect for wets.

You’re blind to the nonsense. The club must love you.

I came on a few weeks ago and gave you a score and when the goals would be scored. The whole thing is a con. People don’t want to hear it because they are so invested in it. The Huns will win the league this year. You heard it here first.
