Backlash expected from Celtic

413

After Tuesday night, you might feel a slight sting. That’s pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps.  Continue to bank Premiership points, mature as a squad and grow the club, because a year from now when we’re kicking it in the Champions League, you’re gonna’ say ‘We’re progressing’.

A week ago I suggested a case could be made that the game at Ross County was our most important before the international break.  I know that game has already faded into memory, but argument stands.  Champions League football is everything to Celtic – our biggest earner, best way to attract players, the sugar in fans’ tea, we need to be there and we need to improve results when we get there.

We are a significant way off the highs of Gordon Strachan’s Champions League campaigns (yes, some people were always unhappy), and we need to redouble efforts to return to that level, but until then, the importance of winning at the weekend can never be overstated.

Our coefficient monkeys did their best last night to make sure Celtic continue to reach the Champions League in future seasons.  Still a lot of work to do before we can assume anything, but fair play to them – every club in the league must do their best for Scotland’s perennial champions.

While Celtic legs and minds will be weary after our humbling in Madrid, Aberdeen flew back from Greece overnight after a respectable draw with POAK, and will travel south tomorrow ahead of their game at Celtic Park on Sunday.  Barry Robson is making progress but the international break surely cannot come soon enough for a squad which is far lighter than Celtic’s.

I expect a backlash from Celtic.

  7. TONTINE TIM @ 6:05 PM,

As always a great insightful read.

However our European Record under MO’N was good and the platform Fergus, DD and Brian Quinn created allowed that to happen.

Understandably competing at that level and not getting the returns wasn’t sustainable.

Yet DD was prepared to risk money to keep us at a reasonable level for a EPL call up.

PL is prepared to risk money on prospect signings in the hope of a return.

Think there was a middle way, keeping us at a better level after WGS went and signing better players to develop and make profit from.

The period from Tony Mowbray through to Ronny Delia, we fell a long, long way and it’s much tougher playing catch up.

Not sure what your point on Martin’s family was but he never left the area when he moved down for the Wycombe Wanderers job.

His daughters went to school around here and his wife was definitely ill.

  13. Good evening, I’ve seen the blog and regarding freedom of speech coming up on not just this blog but also SC , of which I’m now banned. Can I just point out, only your conscious will guide you. You will be judged by the events as seen by those not born yet!

The GB are all our sons and daughters and whether you like it or not we are their parents, their guardians, their forefathers.

On another note, it seems that PL seen the bankers crash coming and Walter & SDM didn’t. Now if we are going to try and change history to suit our agenda then that’s fine, but it doesn’t change the fact that Rangers didn’t go bust because they had debt. The reason Rangers went bust is because the banks called in their debts.

Auldheid as always you love to change the narrative to suit your agenda.

    Absolute nonsense.

Thames Water £17 billion in debt, Athletico Madrid €900 million in debt.

CELTIC £72 million in the bank and 1 point in the CL, disgusting.

  17. One of the reasons for rangers European efforts seeking to be more successful than ours despite our almost total domestic dominance has been put forward as the intimidating atmosphere at Ibrox.

I just watched highlights of the match v Sparta. I have to admit seeimg their support on all 4 sides of the stadium on their feet for 100 minutes willing their team to win a Europa league tie does create a pretty intimidating backdrop. It needs the team to perform of course but it definitely destabilizes the opponents. Having watched both our home games from seats in the north stand as we took the lead only to see our supporters sit back down and begin their customary critique of our players every pass it may be worth asking how much our support really want this success vs theirs. How passionate we are vs them. What the level of desire we have vs theirs.

All I seem to read here is how domestic stuff is not so important and how the board are to blame for all of the problems. Few seem to accept we are in a football backwater where our team gets 4 or 5 tough games, where the opposition actually come at us, each season. Stepping into the CL in such an unprepared way is a massive leap. Every bit of help our team can get from the paying customers can make a difference. Watch Copenhagen v Man I or Shakthar v Barca or even rangers v Sparta and see how passionate support can play its part.

With that kind of backing, rather than folks sitting back on their arse after we take the lead, we could be lookomg at 3 or even 6 points from our home games like our rivals rather than 1.

Of course it is not the only thing. It can’t make for the gulf in domestic playing environments but it can make a difference.
