  1. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

More and more , I feel we were overawed by the occasion.

Perhaps ,in addition , a physical and emotional hangover from Saturday .

I feel we are a much better team than we showed last night.

    Time will tell .

  2. CultsBhoy - sees right through Lawwell and the Board on

I set my expectations as follows.

    1. Complete domestic domination

That means league and at least 1 cup.

    2. CL entry every 2nd year

Beyond that I expect the club to take a doing and the money that goes with it.

    We’re achieving that this year.

We’ve fallen below last nights doing for the last few years for which I lay the blame squarely at Lawwell .

Last nights result was highly predictable the extent of the gubbing is in part legacy of squad neglect over last 2 seasons but to be honest it’s a fairly marginal reason. We could have signed every first choice target for 3 years ( not Ciftci) and we’d still have been hammered.. Perhaps by 5 as opposed to 7..

  3. Was fearing reading the night shift but it wasn’t too bad.

Last night was a very sobering reality check. We knew there was a huge gulf between the top teams in the top Leagues & ourselves but we seemed to be creating something a bit special under Brendan and we started to hope and as always it is the hope that kills you.

Brendan likes his teams to play attacking aggressive football, he is the ideal man for the SPFL but last night proved we are simply not good enough to play that style in Europe.

Where to from here, First of all we have a Domestic League to win & we need a reaction from our squad at the week-end.

The Gordon/De Vries debate is now something that won’t go away. I would not attempt to judge Gamboa on last night so as far as I am concerned he still has a clean sheet. Was Brendan at fault last night?. Yes, I think he has to shoulder some of the blame, he gambled and it misfired.

Does that diminish his standing in any way, absolutely not.

We are likely to have a few more very hairy European nights, we have been drawn in a horror group, our expectations will now rightly be adjusted and both team & supporters will just have to dig in and just do the best we can.

We did qualify which was always the main objective, next objective is to win the 6 in a row, I am confident we will do it but it still has to be done. Then there is the matter of the Domestic Cups not the highest of our priorities but having said that every now & then it’s nice to win the Treble.

For some reason or another I really do want us to win it this year. However more importantly I want to see us building a formidable team for the future. I was buzzing with the way things were going up to last night, a bit deflated this morning but this is still the beginning not the end of the Brendan era, so lets pick up the pieces & look forward.

  4. The Battered Bunnet on

    Tuppence, for what it’s worth…

I expected Toure to play one ahead of Lustig & Sviatchenko to prevent Barca playing between our centre mids and defence, and I expected our two wide players to serve as auxilliary full backs, using the template Lenny developed a few years ago against the same team.

As it turned out, Toure played flat, Roberts stood upfield of Gamboa, and Sinclair was closer to Dembele than to Tierney most of the match.

We defended, in effect, with 7, against the 7 of Barca. It was pretty painful to watch at times, albeit mesmerising to behold Barca’s movement.

Nothing particularly insightful in any of that, but we did allow Barca a lot of space as soon as they had played beyond Brown and Bitton, and they used it stunningly well.

No idea what the goalkeeper situation is all about. Can’t blame Dorus in isolation for shipping 7 goals, but struggling to see what benefit he adds to the team over Craig Gordon. Perhaps Brendan has given Craig a specific instruction that he has elected not to follow.

Ask Johansen what happens when you don’t do what the boss asks of you.

A sore one for the players, a reality check perhaps for the fans, and an unwanted record for the club.

It’s a pity we got this group this year. Learning is slow and painful, and I don’t think there’s quite enough time to learn how to make this group of players competitive against this class of opposition, which augurs more pain.

Saying that, right now, I remain delighted we’re in the competition at all. Bring it on, pain and all.

  5. Hard one to take last night, but I still have the taste of Saturday left in me so it kind of helps a bit, in the back of my mind defeat lay but I tried to stay positive as I normaly do concerning the club, but at least the toilets and the city our fans visited have been left in the state it was before we visited it.

Oh! And there is a gulf between both clubs, it was there for all to see, even in Saturday’s game :))

  6. The Champions League is not a competition, it’s a showcase for the Media Moguls Darlings. as Robert Kelly said years ago TV will be the death of football- Football as a sport died years ago and the rituals we partake in now are just remembrances of how the game was before.

We got handed a football lesson last night and one which will stand us in good stead but the idea of a competitive Celtic team in the CL would be an achievement that would take more than money. It would take a grass roots revolution at UEFA etc etc and as for our own FA they’ve done SFA for years and years whilst overseeing the decline on Scottish football on all levels.

We are the only club that takes part in European competition regularly. The sad thing for me last night was we could have spent 30 million on three players and the result would have still been a Barca victory. They are literally in a different league from us and from most of the teams in Spain.

The question is is it fair that they are there, fairness seems only to be given lip service in these days of n billion dollar deals in football. But Barca’s greatness doesn’t only come from there financial side it comes from a system nurtured and develop one the course of decades on their training ground and it’s breathtaking to watch how they play the game.

I’ve got a bug up my ass today about the CL and as I said last night I never watch it except when we’re playing in it. I think it stopped being a competition a while back so unless Mr , Aleksander Ceferino is planning a root and branch restructure of the Euro comps we at Celtic will be stuck with the idea of the 30 mil per season salve and an ever decreasing hope that said 30 mil will turning us into a competitive CL team.

Big job Mr Rodgers but that’s why you came I imagine.

    Embarrassed by Celtic never:))

  7. Sydneytim

By your reckoning a team full of park/lawwell signings beat Barcelona, but a team with 5 of Brendan’s lost 7-0

It’s never as simple as that of course, but you don’t really seem able to grasp that

  8. \o/ Hugo Z Hackenbush \o/ on

We committed 3 fouls over 90 minutes, that’s a very telling statistic. I’m not suggesting we go out to kick them off the park, but that stat tells me we didn’t even try to get close to them.

It’s the role of the football fan to stand back and admire the beautiful game played at its best, not the players. I am really disappointed about last night and I hope the players learn all the right lessons from this.

    Good summation.

    One point.

I`m pleased we got this group.

An early sharp painful lesson , or series of lessons , now , rather than a slow learning curve.

Just possibly , it may turn out to be the best thing that could have happened.

For one thing , the Board will ignore this lesson at their peril.

Started to read back on the thread and stopped after a couple of pages. I cannae believe the absolute rubbish being spouted by the lurking trolls; even more incredible is the guff being written by some regular CQN posters.

I hoped (against hope) that we would get a decent result tonight if we played out of ours skins and Barca didnae. Unfortunately Barca played out of their skins and we didnae.

Switched off after 2 minutes then contained reasonably well for the next 20 (DDV didnae have a save to make). Split them open and missed a penalty; they upped the pace and the inevitable happened.

Personnel and team formation didn’t lead to the defeat; coming up against the best combined front 3 I have seen in over 50 years watching the beautiful game led to the defeat.

We were up against it going in 3-0 down at half time. Then Iniesta came on. Nuff said!

I’ve seen Cruyff, Maradona, Ronaldo (the fat one and the other one), Zidane and Ronaldinho in the flesh and still contend that Iniesta is the best and most complete footballer I have ever watched. A wee genius!

    ………………………

Excellent, grounded post. Exactly how I feel. The critics need a reality check. I thought it might have been a 5-0 drubbing but was glad in the end that it was only a 7-0 drubbing.

Celtic are essentially a Europa League team at the moment with Champions League fans. We need to have realistic expectations this season this season but demand more next season. Our goal was to get into the CL and it has been achieved. We need to battle with Borussia Moengladbach for 3rd place but I won’t let it bring me down if we can’t pull it off.

  11. I really don’t think we played that badly last night.

Sinclair and Brown I felt played well.

The Champions League has morphed into a monstrous competition, where the biggest debt generally means more chance of winning.

Messi cheated the tax system in Spain, evading jail probably because of who he is and scores a hat trick.

I am getting to the point where unless Celtic are in it I don’t even watch it.

Eventually, these Frankenstein clubs like Oldco will implode.

As far as I’m concerned, the quicker the Real Madrid’s, Barcelona’s, Bayern Munich’s , Mancs, Chelsea et al break away to play each other the better.

Let the rest of it get on with it.

  12. I’m looking forward to the backlash on Sunday. We’ve got an ideal run of games to get back on track:

ICT on Sunday which is good because we have a longer recovery time from a Tuesday night match than normally expected. ICT have had mixed form so far this season. Difficult place to go at times but they are no managed by a relatively inexperienced coach.

Alloa next Wedneday. Ideal opponents at home in a cup that I am sure Brendan will be very eager to win as it gets his first trophy under his belt early in his reign.

Kilmarnock at home next Saturday. Again a team with mixed form but against Celtic at a full CP (Saturday 3pm kick off collector’s item) we should be far too strong for them.

All this in a peiod of time where our rivals play hard games:

Aberdeen away to Dundee, then home to Sevco.

Hearts away to St Johnstone, then home to Ross County.

I’m still excited about this season and where the team is going.

  13. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

IMO,this group of four teams and twelve matches boils down to two teams playing to win the group, and the other two playing for third place.

    Two two-game mini leagues,in effect.

Be better than Borussia in our mini league,we have our holy grail.

Of course, there’s always a chance of an upset in one of the other eight games,or else we’d all be getting a coupon up every week!

  14. Having re-viewed the game, considered the pros and cons of the respective squads and the contributions made by players and officials, I think our response must be that we issue a statement.

  15. TOSB. Twas 2 nil at half time and we had missed a penalty, their second came 2 minutes after penalty miss.

  16. Richie #TeamOscarForever on

When we won 2-1 Barca had 14 shots on target to our 4. Last night they only had 10 on target and we had 2. It’s a funny old game!

digs in like, MO’N’s, Wim’s, and, ither teams that were

Brendan,….we know that we’ll not be on the same planet

as the teams in our CL-group.

    But,….be cuter….joost a wee bit,…..please.

  20. Captain Beefheart on

Barcelona are financially doped. Their carefully cultivated image as underdogs is laughable. Debt ridden, tax navigating, rule bending chumps.

Perspective required. Losing to Maribor, Legia and Malmo was much more painful.

That said, we lost the usual early goal. I didn’t see the game but would assume we were inept at passing as usual away from home?

The CL money gives us a chance to invest and build up our standard. Better to be there than in the EL graveyard.

Dancing to a different tune CSC

  23. There is no point in over analysing last night, we can only suck it up and move on. Collectively there were a lot of mistakes made by Brendan and the team, so it’s up to Brendan to find the improvements for the next CL match.

Our bread and butter remains in domestic football. So the focus turns to Sunday. Another 3 points is key.

As many have said this is only the beggining for this team. Last night was a huge eye opener for Brendan as was the Red Imps defeat. I have absolute faith in him to improve on last nights effort, both this season and beyond.

We have already assembled a sqaud that will prove too good for Scottish football. The challenge now is to assemble a team that can qualify regularly and be respectably competitive in the CL. I use the word competitive loosely.

If we can acheive that, in a domestic context, we will possibly have the most dominant team in Scottish football history.

  24. FC Rostov, who pumped Ajax in the qualifiers, got pumped by FC Bayern.

Ajax are in the Europa League, and if we are being honest the EL probably this current squad’s level. However, we made it into the CL, so let’s embrace the games and take advantage of the income to build ourselves up to be better than a Europa League team. That is what we need to aim for this season and make sure it happens by this time next year.

Scorelines against Barcelona away really are immaterial…

  25. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Neil Lennon – They frazzle your brain until you can’t think straight.

    G. Souness- They move the ball around, waiting for someone to ” go to sleep” and switch off. Then they pounce.

My Euro fear for BR’s Celtic is that he doesn’t have a defensive game.

Part of GS and NL’s relative Euro success was that they had basically the same style, home and away.

In Scotland, we don’t have the luxury of developing a defensive game, such is our dominance and demand for an attacking style.

  26. Captain Beefheart on

    Timreaper,

Unless we return to the Cifci/Blackett/Cole type of signing, domestic dominance is a given.

The board must invest for Europe. Otherwise we will return to humiliation against the likes of Legia and Maribor.
