  1. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

Can we please petition UEFA not to get drawn against Barcelona again?

I only saw the first half. Two down maybe flattered us,but a decent penalty and who knows?

    Seven? Ouch.

Move on,it’s over. A sair yin, aye. But the goal was the group stages and we achieved that.

Next realistic target is 3rd place. We can do that. But in this group it is no easy task.

Six league points out of six between now and our next CL tie. Get the confidence back.

  2. Well good night my fellow Tims.

I leave you to the gentle ministrations of Hamiltontim and his nefarious plans for world domination using the Celtic Trust, several rolls of sellotape and some felt tip markers.

    oh and 7-0 ouch.

  3. Cosy Corner Bhoy on

Well, well, well. A really terrible result. Only the number of goals lost was worse than the last visit (though we did score one then) Bloody hell, what did we expect! Only the goals against tally was the surprise surely? We had VVD and Denayer last time and lost 6 !! And I was there and enjoyed every minute ( except climbing 249 steps to my seat). Unlike Old Tim,ACGR,Praecepta,Jimbo 67, TET, and Old Tim’s ‘Carer’ I was in the cheap seats,……. Think 30 million and what that will do domestically to give us another shot next not to mention we are really only looking to finish 3rd. BTW, try watching Celtic from 1943 till 1951 before you actually win a trophy!!! Hard times? You don’t know when you are well off! :) :)

There’s simply no point being in this competition to make up the numbers.

    ========

There’s 11 teams in the SPFL who could make the same argument. The SPFL is not designed to be fair, so we can’t really greet about the CL being the same.

  5. Don’t give up hope!

In 1963, clubs in the English first division were to have their boxing day fixture reversed a few days later.

So Manure went to Burnley, and got cuffed 1-6.

48 hours later, they returned the favour, winning 5-1 at Old Trafford.

And the might Magyars horsed the Geeermans in an early round of the 54 world cup by 8 ( yeah, that’s right, lady eight!) goals to 3, only to lose 3-2 to them in the final, after going 2 up.

    So watch out, MSN!

  6. We will experience the same with Man City, these are the best players, playing for the richest clubs and for coaches who are pushing the game to new levels.

Shouldn’t we just know our place?

    – finished readi ngback and there’s 3 WANKS who cannot possibly present themselves as serious Celtic fans.

Sorry if you Hun WANKS disagree with my appraaisal of your perfomance tonight on this board…

But I read your appraisals of the young Hoops perfomances and thought I’d rate you in a similar manner…

    Hun Cnuts.

  8. Stepped off the very delayed plane to the demoralising scoreline. I saw the first half and thought we did OK. Barca we clearly superior but there were glimpses of hope.

    So I thought about it.

We put a lot of physical and mental energy into Saturday. Adrenalin would top us up for the first half tonight. But 2 down at halftime , a missed penalty and being chasing around without seeing much of the ball would contribute to draining us pretty quickly. Physically and mentally.

And remember, Barca rested their star players on the weekend.

So maybe it’s just a combination of too soon after the first ever derby against them, coupled with Barca being so effing good that led to the deluge of goals against.

So I’m going to my bed consoled with this being a freak result and that we will do much better in the return leg.

  9. Drat!

Despite my ‘great fitba’ turnarounds’ post. . . .

Naebody came on to mention the MO’N 6-2, then 1-5 at Mordor a few weeks later, depriving me of another chance to rant about improperly registered players rendering that a 3-0 tae us, actually!

Maybe I should just go wi’ the Flo.

    Malas Noches.

  10. Dear Folks, It’s already tomorrow morning and doubtless much of this has been said before, but-

On Saturday, Celtic destroyed “Rangers”, humiliated them, and thereby raised the very real prospect that they were out of their league. Tonight, Barcelona(once again) destroyed Celtic and demonstrated in the most unequivocal fashion that Celtic were way, way, way out of their league.

Now it’s possible to be insanely deluded, claim that Celtic can somehow refuse to accept the rip-roaring public sodomy inflicted on them tonight, and consider that the problem – underfunded diddy team representing diddy league – having been identified is somehow solved. O r even that it is readily soluble. Can BR coach genius into his pool in the forthcoming weeks? Will the team experience an unanticipated, spontaneous access of footballing skill?

(Insert non-specific hyperbolic yet vexatiously relevant query here).

Tonight has been bad. More importantly, the coming days have the potential to be pretty frickin’ bad if there isn’t an appreciation of the fact that Cellic, God love them, are evidently well out of their depth in this competition; if there is no acceptance of that fact (or sudden access of excellence, qvs.) then it’s very likely that multiple, shameful skelpings lie ahead; because if Dembele had scored that penalty, it’s likely that we should have been beaten 7-1; if Celtic had been playing at home that team would prolly have humped them 7-0 (or 7-1).

Tonight saw a brave, ill-starred attempt to compete at the highest level, and a forceful demonstration that this team isn’t up to that; not yet, one might opine, but this evening’s events are empirical proof of our current inadequacy. Since there is minimal likelihood of multiple classy players arriving, unlooked for, over the next few days/weeks, It’s time for BR to reconsider his approach, and for us fans to temper our expectations accordingly.

Angry expostulations that The Awful Truth should be discounted serve no useful purpose; a resolve to Learn From This is the only useful way forward- and to be honest, a decision that parking the bus is a viable option is one that we should consider henceforth, because our other opponents? Well, neither one is arguably the best team in the world, but both of them exceed us, hugely; and factoring that into our approach to the forthcoming games isn’t defeatist, merely a realistic response to the wake-up call tonight.

So do I want five across the back? Six or seven across the back? Well, possibly, if that what is called for in the course of the game; regardless of how many play across the back, I’d prefer that they played as an organised group, rather than the well-intentioned numpties with a penchant for running into one another that we saw far too frequently tonight…

  11. the glorious balance sheet on

On the one hand we have rebuilt new squads to come back from awful results in Europe in relatively short order before

Eg a year after losing to artmedia by 0-5 we beat man utd in the CL

Two years after losing 0-4 to Utrecht we beat Barcelona in the CL

But tonight’s result seems more like it’s in line with the general direction of travel since 2008 and is more a sign of things to come rather than the starting point to bounce back.

Forget about getting out of the groups in 2012, it was a one-off exceptional year, out of kilter with the 4 years before and the 4 years since.

The reality is that the CL is simply a bridge too far for Celtic.

In the last 4 years we have equalled or beaten our record home European defeat twice (Juventus and Milan, both 0-3 in 2013) and have beaten our record European defeat twice (barca 1-6 in 2013 and 0-7 tonight).

Going in through the qualifiers means starting the season early and adding 6 games to your schedule, that takes a toll on our squad.

And when we go in, it’s in Pot 4 and the vagaries of the draw make it more likely than not to be in a group of death.

How did it come to this? Well going back about 10 years Scotland was ranked 8th in the European rankings and had 2 teams in the CL in a number of years.

Our ranking was so high that we generally went in to the CL in pot 3, but also occasionally in pot 2.

But then we started making a backside of things against teams like Aalborg while the Huns did likewise against the unirea urzicenis of the world.

In coefficient terms we’re paying the price for mediocre performances in Europe since 2008.

Too good for Scotland but out our depth in the CL.

  12. Good game of football with some outstanding goals.

If I had to watch that or another Hapoel goal a few weeks back i’d take tonight every time.Getting there was the prize.

Thought Barca were majestic at times;pure, undeniably beautiful football. They are the pinnacle,a joyous example of how the game should be played. The score’s a sore one.But this is a team who can put 5 and 6 passed a Real Madrid containing Ronaldo.Sometimes you just have to acknowledge the other team are better, and at times way better.Nobody hid tonight. We’ll learn from this and improve.

  13. OK poor result and no excuses, but 7 goals 10 shots on target. Even for Barca that is unusual. 70% accuracy is ridiculous. When we have drawn and even been them in the past they had more shots on target..

We needed a night where nothing worked for them in front of goal, and everything went our way, unfortunately it was the opposite.

  14. Just in after a post match beer fest.

First impressions – Dorus – no presence, does not instil confidence.

Gamboa – deer in headlights. Got nowhere near his man all night.

Bitton – worse than useless. Completely static all the time. Watch him fail to jump at Neymar’s free kick.

Dembele – when he scored penalty winner against Astana, I thought his short, staggered run would come back to bite him. It did. Compare to Lewandowski’s penalty tonight. Also gave up chasing anything in second half. Could not bring down any ball on his chest.

    Brown, Sinclair – played well.

Defense – seemed utterly incapable of marking or going with the runners.

Brendan – far too late with the subs.

Overall – obviously, totally outclassed, but 7-0 was avoidable. Ball control, ball retention, speed of thought and action – a total mismatch. We could end up with the record number of goals lost in the Group stage.

    IniquitousIV

  15. Slightly depressing but not unpredictable result. Let’s face it tonight was always gonna be 0 points.

I’m hoping the result has no lasting impact.

    Critical observations….

    1) debut game for a new team in Nou Camp is not advisable – very surprised Rogers went with Gamboa.

    2) the 5 at the back actually made us less secure. Effectively gave them more space around the 25-30 yard mark

    3) still need to bring in more physicality in the middle of the park. Roberts, Sinclair and Bitton collectively talented, but not physical.

    4) wonderful movement from very talented Barca players excepted, we made some very basic defensive errors

    5) they (Barca) are a wee bit special eh? But we looked in awe at them.

    Erskinetim

  16. Iniquiit. Etc.

Totally agree with your summary but add Kolo to played well list. We’ll see if we have anything at our home games.

  17. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

What a ribbing I took last night. Me and the club.

Sainthood will not be bestowed on Brendan until the club releases the purse strings and as Paul67 pointed out that is never going to happen again after Seville under the present custodians and the Jock Stein method can never work again. in a non knockout competition.

That is why this plc needs the huns.

    We are better than Aberdeen.

Brendan will need time money and our trust for a good few years before we will be close to the Seville side but even teams like Barca have improved upon their CL winning teams since then

Nothing will change for the good until Scottish football is gutted from ; huns, cheats, Neanderthal s , parasites.

It is the environment that we play in that is a major part of the problem and we are a major part of that problem.

Desmond has us all excited waiting for the bubble to burst. The same strategy that is being applied to the Huns.

We need new leadership and have done since Seville

Last night https://www.aspc.co.uk/search/property/336221/8-Westerton-Road/Aberdeen/#as depressing as it was essentially unavoidable and predicted .

Even if we had bought 3 X £10m player the result would have been broadly similar.

Barca and other super teams are miles ahead of Celtic. Not much can be done about it until we get in to a decent league.

Still £30m every season is compensation for our troubles and ensures domestic domination in eternity.

It’s the football food chain in action

  21. Barca win 1-0 . 3 points.

    Barca win 7-0. 3 points.

Ffs, Reread the names they’ve got. Never mind the front 3 that scare the bejesus out of anyone. We were always going to get gubbed tonight. I’m just glad we kept it to 7.

Then I’ve thought, what must it be like to be a Barca fan? I mean a real one, dyed in the wool proper Catalan an all that. When your top of the world, the world is round. And revolving.

Hail hail, I’m still glad I’m a Tim an no a Catalan.

Oh Nou Camp in the night,

Barca were brilliant and we were …..not.

    Upwards and onwards, Bhoys.

My only real concern is how the players and Manager react to this heavy defeat.

Judging people in adversity is usually quite revealing.

  25. Sandman wnaker. It’s a long while since I considered myself a serious Celtic supporter but certainly not a hun cnut as you suggest. I am more an interested observer these days with the occasional foray into this and other football sites. My observations were spot on in my opinion. I slept well last night, did you?

  26. m6bhoy on 14th September 2016 6:58 am

    Sandman wnaker.???

    As someone said yesterday,

    never wrestle with a pig,

    because you end up dirty,

    and the pig likes it!

  27. Cultsbhoy

Yep. 5-4-1, 4-5-1, 4-4-2, Gordon instead of DDV, Armstrong instead of Bitton, all or any of the above might have made a difference, but not enough of a difference to prevent us getting thumped 5,6 or 7 nil anyway.

Brendan will learn a few things about last night, but other than a few tweaks here and there, he will be aware that he won’t be competing with the likes of Barca regardless of what he does. Certainly not of they play like that!

We will do the same to a few teams domestically as Barca done to us last

    night.

We will win the league easily, and probably one or both cups.

We will strengthen in December and in the summer, and hopefully be back at the top table in 2017. Depending on the group though, we will probably get served some more of the same.

Expectation levels determine how you deal with these types of results. I expected Barca to be as far ahead of us as we are ahead of domestic opposition. They were, and some.

I’m disappointed we couldn’t make more of a fist of it but not too surprised or shocked.

If Barca beat Bayern Munich 4 or 5 nil in the last 4 of this competition, I don’t think people would be shocked. That’s what we were up against.

Onwards and upwards domestically, supported financially by fixtures such as last night.

  28. Hello everyone.

    I have a confession to make…

Last night’s result is partly my fault. You see I didn’t watch the match last night (my missus dragged me to a buckin’ farbecue). This means that Celtic were unable to do well against Barcelona – Celtic have only ever done well against when I’ve been watching (Proof: Celtic beat them at CP or got a draw in the Nou Camp when I’ve been watching, but I didn’t watch the last 6-1 drubbing and I didn’t watch last night).

So…sorry. My bad folks. But I can learn from this experience and improve. I know I’m capable of bouncing back against Inverness on Sunday.

    Bouncebackability…

  29. Barca have hammered much better teams than Celtic in a similar manner, look at the numbers, they have a £500million squad, level playing field? Yer having a laugh. Onwards and upwards.

    Hail! Hail!

  30. i'vehadtochangemyname on

What a reality check. Poor performance against the best team in the world. I’m proud to be solvent and sustainable though. Brother Walford would want us to be. Definitely 2-3 tiers in the CL now. I know he’s gifted but I hope neymar gets an accidental kick in the nuts at CP. A decent transfer window has made us unstoppable in the spfl but small leagues can’t cope in the CL.

ICT – big test after the camp nou ( anybody notice the telly have changed how they say it again!)

  31. Started to read back on the thread and stopped after a couple of pages. I cannae believe the absolute rubbish being spouted by the lurking trolls; even more incredible is the guff being written by some regular CQN posters.

I hoped (against hope) that we would get a decent result tonight if we played out of ours skins and Barca didnae. Unfortunately Barca played out of their skins and we didnae.

Switched off after 2 minutes then contained reasonably well for the next 20 (DDV didnae have a save to make). Split them open and missed a penalty; they upped the pace and the inevitable happened.

Personnel and team formation didn’t lead to the defeat; coming up against the best combined front 3 I have seen in over 50 years watching the beautiful game led to the defeat.

We were up against it going in 3-0 down at half time. Then Iniesta came on. Nuff said!

I’ve seen Cruyff, Maradona, Ronaldo (the fat one and the other one), Zidane and Ronaldinho in the flesh and still contend that Iniesta is the best and most complete footballer I have ever watched. A wee genius!
