  1. My friends in Celtic,

Very few, if any teams on the planet could have lived with Barca last night. Including the team that is not even in the CL and has just broken the £ Half Billion barrier.

This is the disparity of the financial situation we are in. Peter Lawwell or his sucessor; It matters not a jot.

We keep going on about the Seville team. Yes it was a good team, but ultimately not good enough. Yes it was a great experience and I will never forget the special time in Seville. Great memories.

However it was not the Champions league, it was a lesser competition. And we were in the lessor competition for a reason. That reason still exists.

I am not downbeat, i take my hat of to Barca. Great goals and great play. We had certain chances which we did not take, and I am not convinced about Craig Gordon’s replacement.

Hail, Hail. Even the Gods could not have helped us last night.

We were beaten by the narrowest of margins by a side that won the CL the following season.

Last game of last season: Celtic 7 Motherwell 0.

This season beat Motherwell 5-0; Aberdeen 4-1; St Johnstone 4-2; them 5-1.

Our gulf in class is showing at home and we will hammer a few teams by 4, 5, 6 and 7 goals this season.

There is also a chance that we could lose heavily at the Etihad.

  7. Buy the best back four in Europe, sit the two best holding midfielders in front of them and put big Fraser in goals.

That might make life harder for barca but unless the entire team keeps its defensive shape for most of the 90 minutes they’ll beat you.

They had about 66% possession. If they’d had 80% they would not have won by as much because the amount of possession we had meant extra time when players were in positions where they couldn’t defend properly when we lost the ball. We also weren’t efficient enough with the ball. Balls should have been going wide behind barca for dembele to get on to and at least buy time to get the team in to shape.

Can’t wait until Sunday now. Need to get that out of the system.

If anyone wants consolation go and look at barcas CL results over the years. And their domestic form.

Messi, Suarez, Neymar and 7 other top players behind them, iniesta on the bench!! Who will contain them?

  8. Disappointed at the continuing Barca love-in.

They are prime movers behind the corruption of European football via the CL, their top player, a millionaire many many times over, is a tax cheat, and they happily accept the blood money of a medievalist monarchy.

Their players were sniggering and laughing at us during the game last night.

They are, to all intents and purposes, even more objectionable than Real Madrid, Man City and the rest.

Good players? Yes. That’s what hundreds of millions of pounds in TV money gets you. An admirable club?

    Not for me.

  9. saltires en sevilla on

Barca have wiped the floor with a host of clubs:

Bayer Leverkusen 7-1 ( they bounced back following season and earned a 1-1)

    Roma 6-0

    chelsea 5-1

    Bayern M & Milan both lost 4-0 ( on different nites…)

    Man U lost 4 ( back in ’95)

This version of Barca could be the best ever and could rip up any team that opens up.

Lessons can be learned by Brendan and the team, but last night Barca were on fire.

Of course, that club are dripping in debt, but it doesn’t seem to stop them playing fitba from another dimension.

It was hard to watch but admit we have seen it all before, and just hold up both hands and say keezies!!

  10. Beating Barca 2-1 at home with most incredible home support and an outstanding central defence/keeper and Xavi giving it a ‘swing and a miss’ for our 2nd goal was a miracle…..not a benchmark.

    They were stunning.

We could have played to our very best and lost 4-0.

Our failure to look over our shoulders to see where the best strike force in the history of football was moving was fatal though sometimes understandable.

Wrong team line up. Changes too late.

Still would always want to be involved at this level.

Aye I reckon that they played out of their skins – they do in most games; they don’t know any other way.

The movement of the front 3 in particular is a joy to watch. Their passing and control is magnificent.

That’s the blueprint: it was developed in the mid-sixties down Parkhead way by Jock Stein. He did it with a group of players who were nowhere near as athletic as players are today. It was added to by the Dutch in the seventies. Barcelona are the current evolution of that footballing philosophy.

Are you serious? The Barca players play the beautiful game with a smile on their face because they enjoy what they are doing.

It’s not a Barca love-in; it’s an acceptance of watching a team play the game the way it SHOULD be played; and a recognition that we know where our level is!

In other words that was a run of the mill performance from Barca, nothing exceptional about it at all.

  15. If ever there was a time to discover your opponent had fielded an improperly registered player (or maybe fielded 12 players!), then last night was it.

Thank God for The Old Firm, eh?

  19. Morning

Well I expect a few people at work who have studiously avoided me since I left there on Friday to round my desk like moths to a lighted bulb as soon as I take my place. Such is life – it was not as though I did not enjoy their team’s regular humiliations in Europe when we were domestic also-rans in the nineties.

A few friends of the two big Edinburgh teams were in touch last night and made the point that Celtic fans should now be able to understand how they feel at the start of a season being so financially outgunned that they have no realistic chance of winning the league. As it happens I think their teams and Aberdeen probably have a slightly greater chance of winning the SPFL in what remains of my life than Celtic has of winning the Champions’ League but I can accept why my Hibbie and Jambo mates feel as they do. It is of course not an accident or Celtic’s fault that we are so far ahead in Scotland and we have not been involved in some of the financial chicanery that has allowed Barcelona and Real Madrid to flourish unchecked in Europe (despite what that clown obsessed with the Lennoxtown land deal may think). In relation to the Edinburgh teams specifically it is not our fault that their supports deserted them after 1965 [ average home attendances sometimes higher than ours in the fifties and sixties were, combined, more than 10000 less by 1971] but the result is the same- a total imbalance in which teams make up the numbers. I don’t like us making up numbers.

I only saw the game after the event – and skimmed through it – and do not see any positives as we were so dismantled. We are absolutely inferior to them and although it would have been better if we’d scored the penalty – I suppose it might just have asked them a question- the suspicion is we’d have lost 7-1 instead of 7-0. I don’t think you can learn much either – they are too far ahead- and although some of our players looked worse than others I don’t actually see anybody on our current playing staff that would have made much difference positively though I am surprised Tom Rogic did not get a game at all. Dorus de Vries has not made a positive impact but Craig Gordon has cost us a few goals in Europe since the Internazionale game in early 2015. My big fears are that we will lose all our games and pick up some equally heavy defeats on the way. This could be a long painful autumn.

Sorry I have rambled on hear a bit but Celtic has just had its biggest loss in any game in my lifetime – and I think since 1937- and whilst I will be getting in touch with the guys who run my bus to see about going to Moenchangladbach and have booked time off so I can get away early from work to go to the Alloa game this feels like a very sobering morning to be a Celtic supporter.

  20. SydneyTim says sack Lawell now on

A bit down after this Mornings result. But we have to put it in context

Since beating barca at home we have had 8 Lawell park moneyball transfer windows. Windows that did not try to strengthen the team but only tried to flood the Sqaud with projects to try and sell on. This was our first transfer window where we actually bought to strengthen positing in the team We will have another two transfer windows to strengthen before next CL. We will invest in the team now that Lawell and park are sidelined in the search for players

Painful viewing last night, all criticisms tempered by the fact it was Barcelona we were playing(Tierney taking some very unfair stick on social media, for example).

That said, as good as Barcelona are, I don’t think all analysis of the game should be stifled. Everything that could go wrong almost did. Any bit of movement confused us and they passed through us with ease. And although it is Barcelona, do our midfielders be absolved of allowing Iniesta to run untracked into the box for his goal?

And talking of passing through us and movement/simple one twos confusing the life out of us, the exact same thing happened in Israel a matter of weeks ago.

If criticism of Tierney is unfair, there is just no way Nir Bitton is cut out to be a Celtic player. No heart, limited technical ability and completely one dimensional. If we want to be capable of shutting up shop we need some more leaders, don’t think I’ve ever seen Bitton open his mouth during a game.

    The new keeper is p1sh.

At least thats the hardest game out the way…

    Dearie me ….

  24. My stock reply this morning has been, “Well if you lose 5 or more to a team playing in your league then it shows just how far away you are from that level, and we admit how far we are from this level.”

    A few have grasped what I mean……..!

  25. Its a bit like being at the best party ever then right in the middle of it the polis burst in lift everybody and thro us all in jail. You then wake up still in the jail not knowing why you’re there with a burstin nauseating headache of a hangover, yeah that humiliation hurt quite a bit.

  26. When are people going to get their head around the fact that us beating Barca was an anomaly, not a benchmark. It was Clyde beating us in the cup. Nothing more. 100% romance of the cup.

  27. I suppose last night is evidence of how money which is never paid back [where is financial fair play] can distort competition, the Barcas of this world and there are more although having a template of play and the technical and physical capabilities to carry it out will always dominate, we will probably hand out a few hidings to others in our league competition this year but we must improve physically and technically to even consider ourselves as having a chance, heads up, push on with the correct plan and hopefully improve.

  28. The only thing that matters about last night is that both the manager and players learned something from it and apply that to the next big game.

Play them again tomorrow and we will lose again but perhaps Brendan would try to defend higher up the pitch to stop them playing through us in areas where every one two and incisive pass results in a goal or an effort on goal.

Whilst I was disappointed I’m honestly over it. More importantly I hope the players can get over it quickly too. Rapturous welcome required at the weekend.

We got a lesson in football. Not the first that Barca have dished out and certainly wont be the last.

We are in a much better place than we could have dreamed of a short time ago. Things will continue to get better. We will be dishing out a few of those types of beating domestically.

We trounced Motherwell recently. McGhee made the point that a lot of other teams would be getting the same drubbings from us and his teams season wouldn’t be defined by a pasting from us.

Similarly our season won’t be determined by that mauling last night.

Hands up job. Battered by the brilliance of some the best players in the world, who collectively, when on form , are most probably the best team in the world.

Yes little changes in personnel or formations might make a difference, but only a difference Asti whether it was gonna be 5,6 or 7.

Put it to the back of your minds bhoys. Look forward in anticipation of the season still ahead of us, and the seasons beyond that.

  29. ROBINBHOY on 14TH SEPTEMBER 2016 9:29 AM

Because it wasn’t down to stupid mistakes and embarrassing play. It was down to the fact that they’re miles better than us. Not something we can really do much about.

  30. Off topic, according to Peter Lawwell Celtic will investigate Saturdays events and deal will anyone doing things they do not like, I look forward to this as it must include the new club fans who wrecked the toilets and indulged in their usual repertoire of hate. Im sure our board do not like what they have done, interesting wait and see for the outcome I guess.

  31. Robin

When 3/4 of the athletes who race Mo Farrah and lose by a distance, it isnt embarrassing.

It’s a reality check that in all sports, there are the elite, the middle order and the also rans.

In CL terms, most opponents who face Barca are in the latter two categories.

You work harder to improve personal performance. It’s all you can do. It’s what we will do now.

  32. I didn’t see the game last night (I’ve already apologised this morning for the effect that had on the performance).

I didn’t expect Celtic to get a result last night. We are the fourth pot team in the group for a reason. In away matches we will be whipping boys. Getting to the group stage was our major achievement this season, just try to enjoy the remaining games against a quality of opposition we rarely get to see as much as possible. I hope our players soak up the valuable experience. It will take a few consecutive seasons of reaching the group stages to become a team that will challenge within a group again. While we were in the doldrums everyone else move forward – we are playing a long catch up game that we have little chance of actually winning. This season was the first step though: group stages. Next season the aim has to be to repeat that and maybe be the team that is expected to get third spot in the group.

I don’t see any embarassment in the result last night. It’s all grist to the mill…

  33. Silver City 1888 on

I wonder if the “wee teams”” will resent us any less for our outspending as it has only proved to be enough to get us thrashed 7:0 in Europe… once they stop sniggering, of course.
