  2. Samuel Umtiti (French pronunciation: [sa.mɥɛl ym.ti.ti]; born 14 November 1993) is a French professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Spanish club FC Barcelona and the France national team.

He began his professional career with Lyon in 2012, winning the Coupe de France and Trophée des Champions that year. He totalled 170 games and five goals before a €25 million transfer to Barcelona in 2016.

  3. Stopping Barcelona is, like, super easy. La Liga is just a really dross league. I mean, the 4th placed team in the league finished 27 points behind Barcelona last season. Rubbish, rubbish Villareal.

Why doesn’t everyone just track the runners???? Bunch of dummies. Won’t someone please track the runners???

    If that’s all it takes…

Weren’t Barcelona supposed to have a transfer embargo and yet they signed that guy?

    Or was their embargo over?

    I agree but…………….

Having qualified we cannot treat the Group like the ICC competition – trouser the money and use it as a series of development games.

What’s the point of being in it if we don’t set a target albeit unrealistic? BR (& coaches), squad and support need a summit to climb so it has to be 3rd – even if having reached it we discover it ain’t the top of the mountain.

I’m with Snake on his CL assessment but as much as the dice are ‘loaded’ – we are in it and despite our obvious handicaps (league/players/finance) we need to make the best ‘fist’ of it – even if that means coming back each season for an annual battering!

Finished in January. They still signed players during it (Arda Turan and Alex Vidal) but they couldn’t play until the January

Of course that’s not all it takes but it sure as hell would make it a little more difficult for Barca to cut through us like we weren’t there.

Barcelona will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after Fifa confirmed it will not be able to sign any players in the next two transfer windows.

Fifa announced on Wednesday that it had rejected Barcelona’s appeal against the sanction imposed in April over breaches of rules around the transfer of under-18 players.

The two-window embargo was placed on hold after Barcelona appealed, but Fifa ruled the club will now be unable to register new players in the January and summer 2015 transfer windows.

Fifa said in a statement: “FC Barcelona is to serve a transfer ban which will see the club prevented from registering any players at both national and international level for two complete and consecutive transfer periods, starting with the next registration period (January 2015).”

Players aged under 18 can move to a club in a different country if their parents move there for non-footballing reasons, if they are from another nation within the European Union or European Economic Area and aged between 16 and 18, or if they live within 100km of the club.

A Fifa investigation – centred on several players who were registered and played between 2009 and 2013 – found that Barcelona and the Spanish football federation were guilty of a “serious” infringement of the rules in relation to 10 players.

Barcelona were also fined 450,000 Swiss francs while the Spanish FA was fined 500,000 Swiss francs and given a year to “regularise its regulatory framework and existing system concerning the international transfer of minors in football”. An appeal by the Spanish FA was also rejected.

Barcelona said it would now take the case to CAS in an attempt to have the ban overturned.

“Following the resolution announced today by the Fifa Appeals Committee on violations of regulations regarding the transfer and registration of children aged under 18 years, FC Barcelona announces that it shall continue defending its interests before the highest sporting authority, in this case the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“FC Barcelona may not in any way share a resolution that is an affront to the spirit of our Masia, a world renowned example of academic, human and sporting education.”

A lot of idiotic criticism about last night’s performance…I absolutely agree with you, 100% about this farce of a money-making, corrupt competition…it stinks, so when Celtic are out, I’m out too…

  13. glendalystonsils

Reason that they Barcelona midfield and forward line are perpetual motion machines is to create options for their team mates who have the ball AND to pull the opposition out of shape. Each move attracts an opponent that leaves a whole, another team mate moves into that whole attracting another opponent out of position creating another whole, and so on and so forth until there is no shape to the opposition. Even if the opposition scramble the ball clear, the ball returns to Barcelona and they go again at a midfield and defence that hasn’t got back into shape yet and they create more chaos.

Their players are more skillful, more athletic, more tactically aware and think quicker than any of ours. We have a team that hasn’t faced anything like that type of quality in 3 seasons. The outcome is not surprising. To me there is no difference between them winning 4-0 or 7-0.

There have been plenty of occasions where the team has deserved harsh criticism for European performances. I really do not believe such criticism is appropriate here.

  14. Our team will learn from last night and BR will have learnt a lot about his players and how they individually and collectively coped or didn’t under such adverse conditions. Gamboa had a difficult night and hopefully we’ll see Simunovic & Boyata come in to contention at centre back allowing Lustig to play at right back. This could free up Kolo to squeeze in between Brown and Biton in a more protective shield in front of the defence for the other CL away games. I believe that the rest of the spl teams will suffer from the pain we underwent last night as we put in to practice the harsh unrelenting lessons we endured last night and vent our spleen on them in turn. We need to create a mean, miserly, fearsome and strong defence from our present component parts imo, no time to waste, Man City up next & seemingly their 1st half performance against Man Utd on sat past was better than anything seen in the EPL since it’s inception. Time to tighten and toughen up Celtic. If Barca had scored a last minute goal to win 1-0 we’d still have dropped 3 points but wouldn’t have learned nearly as much.Maybe our problem is we’re not allowed to play tough and mean in Scotland, we get players booked for scoring goals, so imagine setting out our stall to be in the oppositions face, MIB heaven? Not easy but onwards and upwards whilst keeping the faith HH

  15. I said it last night, I would have been happy with a 4-0 defeat and how sad that was. Then thought, what was our worst performance in the CL recently, surely Artmedia Bratislava 5-0. The gulf in class between us and Barca is immense, at least BR is willing to admit it. We just have to take last nights result on the chin and move on to our next game. I reckon poor old ICT are in for a right humping

  16. Funny how we’ve got some guys coming on here this morning with all this tactical nous. I’m surprised you’ve got time to waste on this blog. Should you not be at training with your team planning tonight’s defeat of your opponents in the CL?

We were comprehensively beaten by a team with far superior players with vastly more European experience and a vastly superior budget.

We are ‘Barcelona’ to every other team in our league.

I’m disappointed with last night’s result but I saw things in our performance last night that brought me hope for our future. As was pointed out earlier we are presently an EL team with CL aspiring/performing fans. Barca and Man City were always favourites, understandably, to qualify. The measure of how we have progressed from last season will be our games against Mönchengladbach.

When I woke up this morning I was hungover but I was still a Tim.

  17. Snake – excellent post.

I made a post with some stats attached when the 4 countries got their guaranteed 4 places in the CL.

I didn’t keep a copy but basically it questioned the merit of them getting 4 places based on their results in their domestic league.

In all cases the teams finishing 3rd & 4th failed to collectively win 50% of their league games – the exception being Italy 52% win/ 48% loss.

I suggested the next big 4 demand (a few years down the line) might be – we are the big 4 (the TV audience) therefore each of the top 4 countries must have at least one team in the last 16 of the CL. Who knows? It could be coming to a TV screen near you in the not too distant future!

  18. DAVIDOPOULOS

I asked last night but got no reply(sic)

We had a team full of players making their Cl debuts last night and what more of a baptism of fire can you have than Barca in full flow at the Nou Camp.

I’m willing to cut the newbies a bit of slack if they froze in the face of that.

We were poor in the second half, very poor but me personally I have felt a lot more anger, rage and disappointment at other Celtic Euro results, Braga and Utrecht coming to mind, Malmo last year and Artemedia some years back.

Last night was a skelpin’ but hopefully of an educational variety.

    HH

  19. If our players could get the basics right, we would be able to compete so much better imo.

Ball control and passing and moving into space seems to be alien to us at times, sort this and we have a chance.

    Till then, no chance.

  20. Snake Plissken…to avoid any doubt…the idiotic criticism I referred to came from all the coaching experts who have been posting since the game ended last night and not from your good self…

    regards…

  21. PRAECEPTA on 14TH SEPTEMBER 2016 11:33 AM

They’ll reverse the no team from same countries in same Group and make Groups A-D feature the top two teams from 1 country vs 3rd &4th place from another. This will guarantee 8 teams from the top 4 leagues in the last 16.

Groups E-H will be more competitive for the ‘lesser’ leagues giving them more of a chance – at the expense of less money – which will be skewed towards groups A-D.

Think you might be overplaying your hand somewhat.

    ————————————————-

Slightly it seems – I was given slightly duff info last night – as it turns out Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti was signed for only for €25m on a five-year deal. It is the buy-out clause in his contract that is €60m.

I think the point remains valid, though.

I wouldn’t say it is an excuse, it is a reason, or if you prefer, and explanation – the same point (and a good analogy I think) was posted above from the Rostov Manager. It would be an excuse if we could do something that we weren’t doing that could increase the skill in our front four to the level of skill in Barca’s front four.

Anyway – that’s just semantics that we are unlikely to agree on.

We all want to see improvement, certainly – I was just making the point that some of the comments on James Forrest’s site lacked perspective.

    It’s football cliché time….

    1) We’ll learn more about this group of players in the face of defeat

    2) Sometimes you need to put your hands up and say you were beaten by a better team

    3) Barcelona can do that to anyone

    4) We’re playing with the big boys now

These are clichés. These clichés are true.

I think there will be educational value in this for the players who are willing to learn, and for Brendan Rodgers to see which players have no bouncebackability.

I was ragin’ at Molde. Today I am sanguine.

  25. weebobbycollins

I think I was tempered in my criticism of the team. I know we are not as good as them.

I did think Brendan made the mistake of playing open and trying to take them on.

If teams in better leagues with more money than us cannot and don’t, we certainly should not.

As I say, everyone behind the ball, be physical, close down space and get the corners and set pieces.

Anyone who beats them does that.

I’m as annoyed as the next man at losing 7-0 and we can see fans of other clubs revelling in it but that’s a false victory. Deep down they know it.

As I say, the competition is not designed in our favour so simply being there is all we can hope for with a group like that one.

  26. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

One slight positive from last night was that we got to practice our kick offs…about one every ten minutes!

  27. Sorry for going off topic but I am looking for some tech advice re Kodi boxes.

What is the best box to buy etc and where from.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  28. Looking at the next few games….

I would wait until Alloa at home for Gamboa’s next outing. ICT may be a rough and tumble type match and I think Lustig would be a better option in that game. Would also mean that Gamboa had a bit more training time with team mates and the system before having a home debut against lower league opposition (not disrespect intended).

I would bring Rogic and Forrest back in for ICT. I rate Roberts very highly but Forrest is the form player. Rogic will probably be key in any goals we score up in Inverness.

Hopefully Griff is fit for Sunday – I would put him in ahead of Dembele. Dembele was heroic on Saturday past but needs to be patient before he is in the first eleven every week.

I hadn’t realised that Kevin McNaughton was with ICT now – I used to think he was good player. Not seen him in a good few years though.

  29. ALEC EIFFEL:

Mate, buy one with half decent memory. The standard boxes tend to fill up very quickly.

There’s a website to check out; TVAddons. If I were you I’d buy one, blank it, and then do a full re-install as recommended by those guys. There’s a full tutorial on their site to talk you through the process.

Perhaps the good Mr Rodgers is playing a canny game – go head-to-head with Barca (even tho he knows its a recipe for a pumpin’) ito lull BMG into a false sense of security, whilst at the same time demonstrating to Desmondo the size of the mountain we have to climb. thereby guaranteeing more spend on the team. Just a thought…

  31. Ye don’t play the the Celtic way vs Barcelona just because you skelped the huns in the previous game.

Brendan,…..ye don’t got toe to toe with Barca.

Brendan,…..it isny a crime to, park the bus and, run down the clock by booting the ball out the park at every turn.

But, Brendan,….it is a crime to still be chasing the ball when yer 0-3 down against Barca.

Naivety shouldn’y be an issue for a manager at your level….one would think.

So,….keep skelping huns and, hoovering up all the Scottish trophies that is what hurts our eternal enemies the most.

Oh, and, keep getting into the CL-group stages and hoovering up all that lolly as well.

    We know that you don’t have the Henrik’s, Sutton’s, Lubo’s, Lennon’s, Rieper’s, Vega’s, Balde’s, Lisbon Lion’s etc…..

So, that being the case,….you have to improvise.

    Go and watch the Alamo.

Bitton isny as guid as Big Efe as a front-sweeper….NB will get ye fun-oot…just like last night.

    YNWA

    …off-oot….

  32. There’s something else I’d recommend, and doing it as easy as pie.

Sign up for something called TraktTV. It’s free to join and when you are there, pick out every TV show you love or wanted to see and add them all to your “collection.”

Then (and there are loads of guides to doing it) sync it with three apps; Exodus, SALTS and TRW (the Royal We.) Then you should be good to go.

There’s a Celtic app add-on out there. It has some decent stuff on it, but so does UKTurks who’s football documentaries playlist has a ton of great stuff, including a lot of Celtic ones.
