Berlin to Lisbon

829

A game against Union Berlin, from the second tier of German football, four days before our Champions League qualification campaign gets underway sounds like perfect preparation.  Union will be better than any opposition we have or will play since defeat in Turin last month and they will be miles ahead of our Champions League second qualifying round opponents.

Having to play six instead of last season’s four games to qualify for the group stage has cost Celtic ‘lucrative’ preseason friendlies.  I am sure those charged with the task of balancing the books at Celtic Park (we always pay our bills) will be less than entertained by this, and for many supporters, if feels important that we face Real Madrid or Inter Milan preseason, but the summer time is all about qualifying for the Champions League.  There are five weeks between Celtic’s opening qualifying game and the first leg of the play-off round.  This extra preparation time should ensure we are fitter and ready.

Legend has it that competitive football in July inevitably leads to a drop in form late in the season but legends are not always reliable.  Last year Basel entered Champions League qualification at the same stage Celtic will next season, and next week they become the first Swiss team to play competitive European football in May ever.  Apoel Nicosia entered at the same stage in 2011 and became Cyprus’ first qualifier for the Champions League quarter final last year.

The Champions League final of 2014 will be held in Lisbon, the first time the city has hosted Europe’s top game since………. you know when.  There are 1730 miles between Berlin and Lisbon, or 10 months, if you prefer.  Preparations are already underway.

The criteria for the Final. Allocation was attendance at previous domestic away matches including cup semi finals and also attendance at the home cup matches against Raith Rovers on 25th September, St Johnstone on the 30th October and Arbroath on 1st December. Supporters who attended 4 or more games were successful. A small amount of supporters who attended 3 games who were successful. Not all supporters who attended 3 games were offered a ticket.

    That’s all folks…

    Until we meet again…

The Ferenc Puskas story appears in the ‘Celtic biography’ – pp 70-71.

If he had joined us in the mid-50s and played in the ’57 LC final, the score would probably have been 17-1!

My old dad who was taken to his first Celtic game in 1937, and loves the Hoops but also appreciates the way some players play the game, insists that the best football double act he ever saw were Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo di Stefano.

    HH!!

They were still strutting their stuff at CP in ’62(?).

    Amazing players.

  5. People have more than one login on CQN. They have in effect more than one voice; by not naming these people, then those in silent authority are complicit in shagging the ballot box.

Racists run rampant, and they are feted and encouraged by the myopic proponents of ‘free speech’ (come what may). ((Usually violence))

I have nothing in common with these people. I have nothing in common with people who promote them. I have nothing in common with people who acclaim them. I have more in common with good Rangers men and women. And hold your prejudices in check before you understand what I have just written.

I never saw a list of names pledging to Paul assistance in the cost of the hardware and service he provides but whoever has started it, could you please add my name to it too. Many thanks.

Now and again I’d like to throw in a book recommendation, other than that, until SETTING FREE THE BEARS returns I see absolutely no worth in sharing the same space as so many GREEN HUNS. I feel not only has the blog been polluted by their toxic bigotry but my time reading it has become worthless.

Good point about who would pay for it. Wouldn’t be cheap not just a case of removing a few seats. But have you seen some EPL games? They’re all standing, no barriers to stop them falling forwards, an the stewards do nothing. Accident waiting to happen.

  7. Agree with those suggesting Shiels doing a very public interview for Ally’s job.

A match made in the Shankill.

  8. Why did the need a set of criteria other than being a season ticket holder at Celtic park

A straightforward ballot for those wishing a ticket to then take your luck

Ballot to be conducted by representatives from all supporters groups for transparency purposes

Well, you can understand him not wanting to strip off in the Bernabeu.

Not exactly fair on those of us who’ve taken every ticket for every away game all season mate.

  12. Tallybhoy, a neighbour of mine took Puskas (with Jim Baxter) on a tour of Glasgow in the 60s after an international game. They ended up at a party in a flat in Drumchapel. He swears he walked in on the Galloping Major entertaining one of the local women on the kitchen table! (Apologies if that’s a bit rude for this time of day!).

    test in Brazil

Former Chelsea and Portugal midfielder Deco has tested positive for the banned diuretic furosemide in Brazil.

The 35-year-old failed the test, following Fluminense’s win over Boavista on 30 March, for the drug which can help hide performance-enhancing substances.

His lawyers said the positive result was due to contaminated vitamins.

Fluminense will not comment until the results of the ‘B’ sample are released on Friday.

The Brazil-born Portuguese playmaker spent two years at Stamford Bridge from 2008 to 2010, making more than 50 appearances.

He won the Premier League title in his second season, as well as two FA Cups in 2009 and 2010.

He is also one of only a handful of players to win the Uefa Champions League with two different clubs, Barcelona in 2006 and Porto in 2004.

DECO cheating ,whood a thunk it.

These sad misguided individuals are crying out for attention; it fills the hole in their lives where the rest of us keep our sense of decency and social awareness.

There is no fairness in this bud, lots of different angles to view ref ticket allocation, there is no perfect solution, Celtic are only able to have the players we enjoy watching because of the funding payed at home games, IMO that entitles that person to a chance of a ticket the same as everyone else, not to be discriminated against or ruled out because for whatever reason you dont attend away games, i could have a family going to Celtic park paying thousands into Celtics coffers decide thats enough of the family budget spent on football thereby do not attend away games, does that rule me and my family out of the ballot for cup final tickets?

SFA deciding on an unfair ticket distribution with Hibs having a ticket allocation of over 20,000 the same as Celtic, how does that work?

Sevco are using the ‘investigation’ as an excuse for the nonexistence of their accounts. The MSM will spin that deidco are prohibited from submitting yet another set of interim accounts, therefore they shouldn’t be disadvantaged by the authorities.

Any investigation’s first port of call must be the books! But which set will they see?

I would have loved to see Pirlo in the Hoops.
