Brendan Rodgers appointed Celtic manager

1136

Brendan Rodgers today became the 18th manager in Celtic’s history. Rodgers, 43, managed Liverpool for three years until October, after guiding Swansea to the English (and Welsh) Premier League in 2011. He previously managed Reading and Watford.

His appointment is unquestionably the most popular since the arrival of fellow Irishman, Martin O’Neill, 16 years ago. Known for his belief in playing attacking, possession-based football, he will bring a force of personality to the club and to Scottish football.

Rodgers occupied the top position on Celtic’s wanted list at the start of the month, but the desire to sign him up was tempered by the belief that attracting a manager of such a profile to Scotland would be difficult. My understanding is that as soon as talks got underway in earnest, it was clear neither party would let the opportunity slip away.

I’m delighted at the appointment. The club already feels reinvigorated.

Welcome to Celtic, Brendan. Let’s get on with the job.

  1. toffeetim your figure of £300 million is somewhat misleading, you have’nt deducted what Brendan made from transfer sales, then the figure becomes £113 million Net spend, still quite a bit I agree. Pedantic csc H H Hebcelt

Management team equally important as we found out from RD. Needs knowledge of Scottish game, media, and, current players.

    Neil Lennon please

  3. And another thing I’ve discovered. Blasting out The Proclaimer’s very fine 2nd album attracts a number of knowling glances from the neighbours….

  4. Celtic will need 3 teams now. One for the CL , another for the SPL and a talented youth team for entry into new league 5 in England. As we complete 10 in a row our southern eleven will be at the gates of the premiership.

Of course the media who supported the 2 team approach of the old Ibrox club will be doing somersaults to hold Celtic back.

Celtic have captured the imagination of the supporters and the current playing squad. With 4 or 5 good signings Celtic can make a complete transformation. The biggest risk to the new world is our interfering CFO. Brendan needs to deal direct with Dermot rather than the control freak.

  5. Brendan’s No 2 does not need to know the Scottish game or the media and the current players will be analysed fairly quickly. He needs his own team beside him nothing else por cierto.

  6. PINTAGUINNESS@11:24 – With respect, I don’t believe that Brendan will be thinking along those lines. In my opinion he will build a team to suit his philosophy and to do that will bring in his own dedicated team. There are no surprises for him in the Scottish game, I’m sure that he will know that already.

  7. From a contact deep inside the MSM I got his wee message just now. Make of it what you will…

“All is not well with Warburton and the Press. He has been caught in a few lies and they are waiting for him. If they lose today, he will be savaged!”

It us only a few short days ago that PL stated that our strategy would not change.

There seems to be a general euphoria amongst the Celtic support that Brendan Roders signing is a sign that he is about to be handed a larger budget to sign players than Ronny Deila would have been given.

In short ,We are about to splash the cash.

I just don’t see this happening.

    What is your opinion ?

    Couldn’t care less about Rangers.

Celtic must recruit wisely. No more utter crap.

Patrick Roberts should flourish under BR.

I am actually now looking forward to the new season.

I was thinking the same thing.

Puzzled as to why anyone (and KevJ does it too) would do this? Do you need more than one persona to have more than one opinion?

Sounds like a lot of smelly fish to me.

Why wait on them getting beat.

If they wanted to get him ,they could upset him even more by outing him in the build up to a cup final.

Can’t see us spending much but intelligent recruitment doesn’t necessarily entail spending lots. The scouts had better up their game.

Let’s not be too deluded about that 7-0 game against Motherwell. We are a mediocre side.

  16. Wonderful appointment, it will be interesting who Brendin will bring in as coaching staff. Also as previous folks have said, I think he has possibly been on board for a few weeks looking at the players. Who he may keep and who will be exiting stage left.

Whatever it’s all looking good for the immediate future. Celtic Park is gonna be bouncing next season.

Stan Collymore happy with the Celtic appointment. As is Trevor Sinclair. Not sure why the latter likes Celtic.

  19. Captain Beefheart

    I completely agree.

Whilst the 7-0 against Motherwell made for a great day in the sunshine.

It was the exception ,not the rule.

We will never know just how much of a competitive edge Motherwell lost as a result of the game being relatively meaningless to them.

We need a Strong .powerful centre half with pace and great ability in the air.

    We need pace up front.

We need a Benteke type to lighten the scoring burden on Griff and to help him.

We need a Wanyama type or Neil Lennon type in midfield, and in an ideal world we need to improve on Craig Gordon.

  23. TINYTIM @ 11:42 AM,

The interesting thing vis~a~vis splashing the cash is the position the Club is in.

We have been told on many an occaision that..

    – All money is ploughed back into the team

    – We budget for Scottish Football only. UCL and Selling players is a bonus.

Now in Lenny’s last Season, started on the back of a UCL run that had seen us playing UVE in the last 16 the previous Season and have another run – faltering as it was – in the UCL. We sold over £20Million pounds worth of players and the riegns were handed to Ronny.

Now Ronny had no significant warchest, in fact during his tenure we were once again nett sellers of players.

So, we have kept our powder dry so to speak.

And now we can see the white of their eyes…

    Hail Hail

    I sincerely hope not.

King is in today’s papers saying our 5 in a row is tainted and doesn’t count because Rangers weren’t in our league to compete with them.

He is saying all the right things that his fans want to hear and doesn’t care about upsetting the Celtic family.

I just wish we had someone of power and influence on our board who would nail the same club myth.

It is utterly mystifying to me that they haven’t.

Is our board full of cowards, that are afraid to tell the truth?

  25. Have I missed something?

Every one of our first team regulars(and most of the fringe players) would walk into EVERY other SPL team. That hasn’t changed.

What has changed is we now have a manager who will implement a system of playing attractive, attacking football. It will be different from the, mostly, dross we ha had to watch over the last two years. Arses will be kicked and a definite style will emerge.

Be interesting to see how under-performers, IMO like Brown, Boyata, Bitton, Armstrong, Mackay-Steven, Lustig and so on, play next year…if they’re still here?

    I can’t wait.

  26. Trevor Sinclair always has a good word to say about the Tic.

Don’t know why, unless it’s our devastating good looks, gay wit and sharp repartee.

Fact that we don’t cheat, pay our creditors (facepainters included) and are generally good all round ghuys and ghirls with a sunny, pleasant disposition may also have something to do with it.

Kev J was using various aliases last year to back up his opinions when he was on. He has stopped the experiment more recently. I can’t remember all the names but one of them was along the lines of Hi-diddle-de dee an actor’s life for me.

They were quite obvious and he made no attempt to disguise or deny them.
