Celtic targeting the young player demographic

219

Notwithstanding the fact that we have only completed two Bosman transfers from Sheffield Wednesday, there is a consistency between them and the plethora of under contract players we have been linked with.  They are in their late teens or early 20s, everyone with growth potential.

Given the season just ended that strategy feels like it would have been a good idea 12 months ago.  Then, we signed David Turnbull from that demographic, although it would be half a season before he was properly introduced in the first team.  Risks about whatever way you spend your money but this strategy should always be high on the agenda.

    Need’s a balance.

What was it Sir Alex said about winning things with kids?

  2. The Battered Bunnet on

Do we know who is making the recommendations and who is taking the decisions?

It seems somewhat unlikely that the new manager has any prior knowledge of the players given he’s spent his recent professional years in Japan.

Nick Hammond left the club in March, some considerable time too late.

Gary Penrice came in last year and brought ignominy with him in the shape of Barkas, Ajeti, Duffy, Laxalt etc

The CEO has been in post for 5 days.

Who owns player recruitment at Celtic?

  3. quadrophenian on

We have plenty of kids that either deserve or are not good enuff to get a first team break. Tong Galenti!

    Balance is exactly whats needed.

Balance between promisings and game-smart Pros.

Mooy would be a good fulcrum for starters.

  4. Beamishismypint on

The battered Bunnet @12.15 That’s the question I’ve been asking myself over recent weeks. Also, we were told that Ange didn’t do player trading in previous roles.

  5. Buying young players is not new at Celtic. We cannot afford these players if we wait to they are fully developed then we wouldn’t be able to afford them. We need to get in quickly and to pick up the cream of the crop.

There are risks as well as benefits as not every one will work out. Last season we picked up a few potential stars in Connell and O’Connor but Lenny nor Kennedy did not play them. Both are likely to be disgruntled and will now join the queue of the want aways.

If Ange is going to give these young players a chance and they get a run in the team then great but if he reacts like the last few managers then this strategy is doomed.

  6. May be my medication, though I’m in a very agreeable mood today.

Agree with the lead article and the strategy of singing young.

Agree with the need for balance and a good mix of existing and incoming players

Agree with the point around who is responsible for scouting and signing. This is a very interesting point.

    Hopefully, someone agrees 👍

  7. Definitely a signing policy which should be the backbone of the Club alongside bringing through our own youth.

The biggest risk we seem intent on taking this summer is playing want away players in European qualifiers.

If it is a wet day when a new player joins us, will he be `Signing in the Rain? ‘

I am pretty sure that Friesdorfer intends making an appearance next Friday and there is a good chance I will turn up as well. Maybe some are put off by the ` Frenzy` appellation. Not many are in the Big Jimmy League of Extraordinary Gentlemen re pints !

You would think that a ‘want away’ player would want to impress possible future clubs.

But it’s a funny old game.

In the short term though Scott Brown has just left.

    So who is “the daddy”?

Seems to me the choice is either get some players in now, or, wait until the manager has settled in and formed all his own contacts and watched every prospective signing multiple times. Neither timescale, nor, Covid will allow this.

The latter would probably mean that we would sign nobody in this window. I am sure that Ange is front & centre when any decisions about first-team signings are made – just like all previous managers. He is new to the club, new to the country and will therefore need all the help and advice he can get – it is then up to him how he uses it.

I just wish the “Peter Lawwell signs all the duds and whomever is manager signs all the cream” mindset would go away – it was never ever the case.

This is a new season with CL qualification the prize for winning the title. We need to leave all the rancour behind – some won’t of course because they wallow in it – but the rest of us, all 50k+ season ticket-holders, must have our heads up and be looking forward.

Things are unpredictable and will most probably be tough, but the new manager has a tabula-rasa from which to work – let’s throw all of our weight behind him.

Having watched the miked up video of Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic training session, I was struck by how similar it was, to a miked up video training session, I watched last year, of Marcelo Bielsa at a Leeds United training session.

I really feel that we have the real deal in Ange Postecoglou. However, it is imperative that he is adequately backed by our board in player recruitment.

See no evidence of this happening yet.

Celtic scouts ( who ever they are ) have done exceptionally well ( Lustig Dembele ) for bosman’s and cross border compensation type players.

It’s when we’ve tried to compete spending millions where we’ve gone wrong in recent seasons Bolingoli, Barkas, Ajeti. Aspiring to play for Celtic on a mere £15K, when £70K is available just a few miles away in a vastly superior league.

We need straight into the side seniors from fringe leagues in Europe, choosing the right ones from this niche market has always been the trick.

We are a shambles at recruiting. Our two young centre half’s left for Bayern as there was no pathway to the first team unlike in Munich. We are now signing players the same age plus looking to pay 5m for a 19 CH.

As for Nisbet and Hickey both were available last year Hickey £1-1.5m Nisbet £300k surely the smart thing would have been to sign and loan them out thereby saving us 5/6m

NLs attitude towards the young players has been around at both hibs and us. Him the board and Lennoxtown are shambolic. These new signings appear to be from Hammond…deary me. Expecting Ange to come in and change this is impossible. It needs totally restructured. We are a shambles and letting Broony go was another huge gaffe. Everything that happened last season was in the post for some time and there’s little chance of anything changing as the manager seems stuck with the same back room staff…but hey he was good mic’d up. Canny even get the third strip right…utter disaster of a season coming with the wantaway players still in situ. I can’t see us qualifying for anything we are all over the place. So sad to see us in this state.

  24. Meanwhile .

Rangers sign a battle hardened 27 year old midfielder, who has played 62 matches over the last two seasons in the EPL.

They finished 25 points ahead of us .

We are about to lose a few of our best players .

We have gambled on a Southern Hemisphere manager ,who doesn’t know any of the players we are trying to and have signed.

We are signing teenage Bosmans ,who don’t have 1 appearance between them ,at a top class level of football.

Who is making the decisions on what players we recommend to the new head coach ?

This has all the hallmarks of an utter shambles .

CL qualifiers in a couple of weeks .

If the Huns qualify for the CL group stages and we don’t.

They have circa £45 m of income that we won’t.

If they win this seasons SPFL ,there is another £45 million for guaranteed CL entry for next year.

Yet we are gambling with untested managers ( in Europe) no known or settled scouts ,and a squad of youngsters and failures.

The usual suspects will be on lambasting me .

But my level of concern is off the scale.

    Fail to plan.

    Plan to fail.
