Falkirk and Cove Rangers are 4 points apart in the First Division. Falkirk, attaching priority to promotion, field 8 reserves, including two 17 year old youngsters, against Celtic, who elect to play their first team, but only one striker. 0-0 at HT, 3-0 at FT.
Cove Rangers play their strongest team against Sevco, who elect to go with mostly second stringers, but field two strikers. The strikers score 3 goals in half an hour.
I think Eddie Howe has his work cut out for him. The difference in confidence levels is profound.

I think that we are, on the one hand, capable of beating the Ibrox club in the next round – but he will we beat them?
On the evidence of the last two meetings against them…..and watching us labour against Falkirk yesterday, a very young & inexperienced League One team, then my answer must be no.
We seem to play a theoretical game – pass & move ad infinitum, but when it comes down to practicalities, like scoring goals, we seem to lose interest. I know in the end we scored three against Falkirk – so would have the Celtic Womens’ team.
For all our large collection of players, who up to October last year our fans were lauding and for all of our c£70m wage bill, sadly this season there has been no synergism at Celtic.

There will always be a *”Rangers” in some form – it has a massive active & passive constituency in Scotland & Northern Ireland. Whether there will always be a Celtic with such a large following is in my opinion dependent on the constitutional future of Scotland. Independence will see our minority schools, religion and culture marginalised by a bankrupt economy’s need for rationalisation & centralisation. In twenty years we would be merely a small ingredient in a ‘tartan hotchpot’ recipe. Our advisories will then hold the ‘whip hand’ and be bigger fish in a smaller isolated pool.

Great post! Any weather after the winter of 1962-63 could be used as evidence of global warming!
Bob Kelly probably sold Pat Crerand to keep the home fires burning.
There was an article in the Falkirk Herald not so long ago re the Battle of Brockville, think Saint Stivs posted a photo of our team from that day of infamy. Rarely seen a look like that from Billy McNeill, or Pat Crerand for that matter. Not men easily intimidated and thats for sure.
As for the Beatles, they broke up before the Lisbon Lions!

I think Eddie Howe has a lot of work to do but he’ll be given all the tools to do it.
We’ll sell…
Eddie £25m
Ajer £15m
Callum £12m
Christie £10m
Between Henry, Shved, Bayo, Barkas, Ajeti and Klimala we’ll make another £10m.
We’ll loan or pay-off Griffiths and Ntcham and Broony and the loan players will leave.
This gives us £70m but more importantly frees-up £400k a WEEK in wages which gets you 10 Stuart Armstrongs or 10 Moussa Dembeles.
What an opportunity for any manager.
If we get this right this will keep us on top in Scotland and hopefully progress in Europe.
In the last 6 decades, only in the 90s have we not won the most league championships.
In the last 20 years we have won 15 leagues.
In the last 55 (!) years we have won 31 leagues and ibrox fc 19.
Sevco have NEVER sold a player for 7 figures ( imo) and won’t any time soon.
Only their rich anti-Catholic fans spending £100m of their kids money has won them a league.
Power in Glasgow isn’t cyclical anymore- we’ve been pumping them for 60 years which funny enough was when they started televising the games.
I’m nearly 50 and I’m certain I’ll see 10 in a row.

If I was a young esteemed manager like Howe, of course I would want to stay in the EPL where my reputation has been earned.
To consider a detour route back to the EPL with a great club like Celtic would of course be very attractive….but only so if it is a successful detour.
For example Gerrard’s stock would have been diminished had he gone three years without overtaking Celtic – his results in the EL would have only offer slight mitigation.
So Eddie has a big decision to make – only success will do at Celtic, whereas, mid-table at Newcastle and Crystal Palace would still keep his CV intact if another opportunity arose.

Laxalt – good stats. I was in my twenties for virtually all of the 90s. I think it skews the memory. The first 8 years of the 80s were terrible times for the Ibrox Franchise, and oddly enough probably a golden era for Scottish football ranking alongside the late 60s and early 70s European wise and certainly domestically. Healthy competition for Celtic from the northeast. Great games against Aberdeen and DUFC.
The honest truth is that David Murray not only destroyed RFC he did serious damage to the competitiveness of Scottish Football. Ironically though he forced Celtic to get their financial and commercial act together and created an arch rival he couldn’t compete with honestly.

Laxalt 7.59..
BRILLIANT. .
McManus eked every ounce out of the limited ability he had.
He was part of a back 4 that restricted the eventual CL winners to one goal in 210 minutes of football in 2007.
Along with Telfer, Caldwell and Lee Naylor.
Pretty amazing when, later on, VVD was part of a defence that wasn’t so tight.
Lets all…
