    GFTB,

All the accolades coming Billy’s way are well deserved.

The funny thing is, for all his qualities as a player and a leader, the one defect in his game was that he coudn’t kick a ball properly.

He would just swing his leg at it.

    Heading?

He must have had a magnet in his head. He missed nothing.

English fitba means heehaw to me, you can appreciate a great player, but who would you have today De Gea or The Wall ????

Growing up I was never used to us having a decent goalie, never mind the refs, I thought it was in the Sfa handbook we were not allowed a decent goalie……….

Ian AndrewsCSC….. Ian was England’s next number 1 until the cheats battered his confidence,mi would have played Roughy…..just my opinion :-)

but Boruc, Fraser & Craig (who I think is actually the best of the lot)

Billy is an icon, a total credit to our club…..

I was listening to Radio Scotland earlier, it has been mentioned on here that this has been known to close family friends for a long time, Andy Walker, Davie Provan, MacAvennie, Joe Miller and Pat Bonnar have been helping the family….. the way it should be, again, my CQN is reading punters views of players I have only heard or read of….. Cheers

  4. I’ve never actually ‘met’ Cesar. There was one time a few years back that my wee Bhoy was at a wee CFC training event at Barrowfield.

Popped into the wee clubhouse as we were leaving. Don’t remember hearing or seeing the gentleman who came in behind me but I was suddenly aware of a presence.

I turned around and it was him. And before I could say anything – we’d have been waiting a while, I was awestruck – ‘hi, how are you doing?’ asked the great man without a trace of ego.

My Mum was a big part of nudging me towards being a Celtic supporter. She loved the Lisbon Lions because in her words they were ‘just ordinary folk’ – the highest compliment she paid to anyone.

When I sat my 11 plus exam I presumed (if i passed) I would be going to Our Lady’s High. Therefore, I checked the fortunes of the school football team. Lo and behold they had a team about to play in the Final of the Scottish Schools Cup…and who was the captain? Billy McNeil of course…plus, he was already heading to Celtic according to the article I was reading. As it was, I never went to OLH but to Holy Cross. However, I met Billy on numerous occasions, even sharing a cup of tea with him and Liz at their home. I shared something else with Billy (and john jack and john kurila), we had Lithuanian families. These guys were heroes for us…for me Big Billy was divine, a God. How appropriate to see him up on yon platform hoisting the big cup into the air. That was the day the huns began their death march…45 years later they died trying to achieve immortality…Thank you Billy…hero, gentleman and God…

  6. I was in hospitality at the cup semi. It was clear Billy was not well.

Credit to Andy Cameron, who spent a lot of time talking and laughing with him.

  7. Artur Boruc was by far our best keeper of the modern era. By far, before he lost the plot for whatever reason. CG sold the farm a couple of years ago in CL at Celtic Park. He was not in charge of his area and made a couple of poor decisions in going out for balls that resulted in 2 goals. I know that split second decisions need to be made but he got those two wrong IMO. He has done quite well since then, so it will be interesting to see what he decides to do contract wise.

    So sorry for your loss

  13. Big Ood: Not sure. If not there, it will probably be shown in Kennedys in Drumcondra. Best to check the Bad Ass & Naomh Pádraig Facebook pages a couple of days beforehand.

  14. Re. oor King Billy. Unfortunately I’m of an age that allowed me to see the Big Man in his pomp, and I mean BEFORE Lisbon Lion fame.

A memory marks out the callibre of the man – early/mid 60s we were playing at Paradise against, I think, Hibs and were 4 – 0 up going into the last few minutes. Incredibly (even then) we got a penalty, but it was obvious to everyone but the ref that it wasn’t a pen at all. Up stepped Big Billy, put the ball on the spot , stepped back then ran forward a few steps and ballooned the ball over the bar then turned and jogged back up the park. Sportsman on the field, gentleman off it.
