I like the below-radar way Celtic have operated this transfer window. Mikael Lustig arrived early without much of a murmur and Rabiu Ibrahim’s trial and signing went through with casual understatement, while Jaroslaw Fojut completed a pre-contract agreement before many of us had even reached his Wikipedia page.
Most of the headlines surrounding Celtic have been in connection with English clubs wanting our players, closely followed by public declarations of ‘I’m going nowhere’ from the players in question.
Compare and contrast with the situation over the city. Almost daily Nikica Jelavic has to deal with a completely different scenario his club have placed him in, today telling STV, “The manager appreciates me and likes me, but I know the club are in a difficult financial situation and if they decided they needed to sell me, I would accept it.”
If you bump into Nikica tell him he’s talking rubbish. His club were recently bought by a billionaire, they have no financial difficulties and they are reliably informed they are going to win their tax case. Rangers players telling the media that their club are in a “difficult financial situation” are miles off-message.

re Performance Schools.
I’m not entirely sure what’s changed, other than a few coaches. The Performance Schools system was set up a couple of years ago.
At face value, it seems like a positive thing to do, and I wish the kids and the scheme well, but as I said, I’m not getting the sense that very much at all has changed.
Celtic, Dundee Utd and a number of other clubs already run similar schemes for their youth players, and if this scheme means more talented kids get more coaching while improving their schooling and life chances, terrific. If it simply replaces the schemes the clubs already run, cui bono?
Am I missing something?
We’ll see I suppose.

The problem with the Celik deal was hidden away in a report from STV about 4 days ago.
It mentions the renumeration to GAIS which would need to be paid and that they would presue the payment.

Mervan Celik has completed his move to Rangers, signing a three-and-a-half year deal with the club.

The Sweden Under-21 international flew into Glasgow on Friday, completing his medical and finalising terms.
“He’s very direct, very competitive, he can go by people and score goals,” Rangers boss Ally McCoist said of his new signing.
“I am of the opinion he can play in a wide position in a four or a five, as well as through the middle.
“I think he’s an all-action player who hopefully the fans will take to as well. More importantly, he will be a goalscoring threat when we get him in the team.”
Despite having not played a competitive game since October, McCoist had hoped Celik could come into contention for Rangers’ weekend match with Aberdeen. But the club look to have given up hope of the clearance arriving on time.
His former club, Swedish top flight side GAIS, are entitled to £250,000 in training compensation for the 21-year-old and have expressed their desire to claim the full amount.
A statement on the Swedish club’s website confirmed: “Mervan’s contract with GAIS expired in December. But the club will receive training compensation from Glasgow Rangers when the contract is signed.
“The renumeration to GAIS is 300,000 Euros (£250,000).”
Rangers can field Celik before they pay the full amount of training compensation but must make payment within 30 days of the player’s registration.
There is scope for the Scottish club to negotiate the final figure with their Swedish counterparts, but GAIS would be entitled to refuse any deal and subsequently claim the full amount.
GAIS head coach Alexander Axen told the club’s website he believes Celik has what it takes to be a hit in Scotland.
“I think Mervan is perfect for British football,” he said. “He is a tough, technically gifted player.
“In this environment, he is likely to take another step in his development and be even better.”
Looks like they’ll be paying, if Celik’s playing.
