Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

Great video to watch at side of the pool, toasting in Algarve.

Re CL, i hope we don’t fall into the trap of saying we will beat this team or that team, they play in a crap league etc. unless you watch Finish or Moldovan football every week, we should approach each team with optimism rather than triumphilism.

  3. Shivers up and down the spine with the video. Spoke to a few Bhoys on holiday who previously had season books and are renewing again. I hope a few more do the same and our young team are supported fully.

  4. Paul has now written 85,245 words on Ra Ragers’ situation since his first post on Monday 13th. February. What a rollercoaster of a read since then.

Rangers in administration without tax case

There are not words powerful enough to describe today’s news. The English language is insufficient and I have no Greek or Latin. Rangers Football Club have today asked the Court of Session to appoint an administrator, unable to service their creditors. The freight train of their tax tribunal has yet to hit, these events relate exclusively to how the club has operated in other areas.

Scottish Premier League rules state that clubs are deducted 10 points on going into administration, which will give Celtic a 14 point lead at the top of the table once in effect.

This is a day we have predicted will come for over three years. It has been inevitable for that long. Now the really interesting events will happen.

We don’t need no stinkin’ Rangers.

  5. Watching that video, I actually felt a wee bit sorry for the huns…

……..then I remembered their hatred and bigotry, hell mend them.

Sheriff play pass and move football . They have dig and look well fit .

Molde —— fast and fit . Percentage football .

Helsinki —— fast , fit and skilled . Percentage football . Looked a good team..

Limassol ——- pass and move football . South Americans / Africans ./Greeks/ Cypriots

Looked like a good team . In my opinion the best team amongst our potential opponents..

Hoping for Baku in the draw tomorrow, will be one to look forward to for the Bhoys of Baku CSC.

If we get that draw I need away leg first as I’m back in Scotland when the second leg is played.

Gordon_J: Let’s have Limassol then. Sides that are well into their seasons have a distinct advantage,

roy croppie – Fair play to Bomber, it’s nice that he has a hobby.

It’s an unusual hobby, turning up outside other people’s businesses and demanding to see their title deeds, but at least it keeps him away from the bookies.

A career in panto beckons should the talented Andy Cameron ever decide to hang up his curly slippers. (thumbsup)

  11. I would like to think that we have the players to get past the 3rd qualifying round of the CL, but we must not fall into the trap of underestimating our opponents(whoever they might be)! The final play-off round (if we get there, please god), will be a lot harder to negotiate. But I remain optimistic!

    Serious question:

Is John Brown an Ian Pattison character who escaped into real life somehow? (thumbsup)
