Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

  5. John Brown says he is pure flattered by the number of textys he’s received, and he’s been in more meetings with lots of really rich people and ‘the bank’.

He hopes to release news soon of how to donate money, but not to give any to Charles Green, and definately not until he gets his hands on ra deeds.

Guys, not sure if it has been brought up before. If so, please advise. What is John Brown suggesting the bears do about Ra Pies? Is it:

    A) Buy Ra Pies in order to “own ra club”; OR

    B) Not buy Ra Pies because until they’ve seen ra title deeds?

    Thanks in advance.

Any truth in the rumour that the title deeds to Ibrox are printed on the back of the Necronomicon from “The Evil Dead”? (thumbsup)

Seen evidence of a group of mhutants that have purchased tickets for hospitality at the kelty game.

After the game they will get to meet mccoist where they plan on embarresing him by wearing banners/sashes(coulsnt make this up) celebrating Paul le guen. Banner will read something like SFPLG

  12. Picked up my CQN badges from the excellent blogger Bundoran Bhoy (Thanks). They are Kwality!

One problem though………BB did not fancy a Guinness and had to head back to work!

Is this normal behaviour from the bold BB?

    HH

Ps. When he reluctantly handed the badges over he kept whispering “my precious” and on receiving payment he whipped up his jerkin to reveal a small leather purse attached to a cord round his neck that magicked my coinage away!

  13. Philvisreturns – he does indeed!

And so do, in my humble opinion: Callum McGregor, John Herron, Jackson Irvine, Filip Twardzik, Marcus Fraser, Paul George(once back from a horrendous leg break) and the forgotten man(apparently) James Keatings!

Are we to assume, then, than Ally McCoist has eaten them?

  17. Celbridge Celt on

Ok, it’s kind of how I thought it’d be 50/50 for McFadden to join Celtic, I personally think he’ll be back to a Championship/lower end EPL and the press will big it up and knock it down.

For some he’s “had his chance”, others “not proven himself over the past few seasons”. Others would be delighted to see him light up the SPL…

If it did come to pass and he was a decent price, I’d like to think he’d bring a bit more directness to some of our play (when we’re not winning 5-0 of course!).

Tons more players to be linked and quickly dismissed before now and the end of August – although I don’t see any last minute buys unless we’re in Champions League group stages.

  20. We can and should be able to hump any of those potential teams in the C L qualifiers. Would agree with a previous post about Limassol though, just back from Cyprus yesterday and the heat is stifling, u get a sweat on just reaching for your pint! If any to be avoided I would say them.

Feel really upbeat about C L progress and I reckon we have a good shout on making an impact, couple of quality signings would be good though.

Paul 67, many thanks for a wonderful site and the video was brilliant.

Keep the pressure up, they need to loose titles . Cheats.
