Chance for champions to extend lead over St Mirren

191

Two weeks ago, Motherwell were neck-and-neck with Celtic at the top of the table.  A home defeat to St Mirren and another reversal at Ibrox has seen them slip to fourth in the table, but the devil is in the detail.

The Lanarkshire side battered St Mirren but failed to make any of their 20 attempts count, while even the home manager at Ibrox admitted his side were fortunate to take all points.  What Stuart Kettlewell has achieved since taking over from Steven Hammell in February has been incredible.

While Celtic can expect a greater challenge than last week, Motherwell know exactly what is in store for them tomorrow.  Celtic scored six goals across their last two league games, that’s as many as Motherwell have scored in the league all season.  When the champions hit form, no one in Scotland can withstand them.

After making only one appearance last season, Scott Bain is set to double that number tomorrow, due to the suspension of Joe Hart.  He will have an important role to play.

The early kick-off gives us the chance to extend our lead at the top of the table to five points over challengers, St Mirren, on a temporary basis, anyway.  Saints travel to Kilmarnock later, but a win for Celtic would take the wind out of the sails of anyone else with title aspirations.

  1. Hello again all you young rebels

Fantastic news this fine Melbourne morn, that Reo has

    signed on the dotted line.

Think we all know now he’ll be off eventually, as that seems

to be our modus opperandi, but the longer we keep him

    the better for us imo.

Maybe he’ll play with a bit of a smile now 😜

Down to the local club today, no doubt packed with “ Pies “

supporters, that’s the magpies or Collingwood as they’re

    known here.

Loads of Celtic bhoys among them who’ve been here since

childhood, so think I might give them a shout today.

  17. Matt O’Riley has become the latest Celt to commit his future to the club, having signed a new four-year deal which will see him remain at Celtic until 2027.

The news, which is sure to delight supporters, follows hot on the heels of the announcement on Friday that Reo Hatate had signed a new, long-term deal.

And the 22-year-old midfielder joins Hatate, Callum McGregor, Liel Abada, Kyogo, Daizen Maeda and Anthony Ralston in signing new deals in the past few months since Brendan Rodgers’ return to the club.

The Danish Under-21 internationalist, who joined Celtic from MK Dons back in January 2022, has been an impressive performer in the Hoops since making his debut in a 2-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle just a couple of days after signing.

He has gone on to make 80 appearances for Celtic, scoring 12 goals. That tally includes four goals in this campaign, with O’Riley having been in superb form since the start of the season.

Speaking to Celtic TV, the midfielder said: “It’s probably hard to put it into a short sentence but I think everybody knows how much I enjoy playing here, especially at Celtic Park because I don’t think you get that anywhere else.

‘I’ve said before that I’m just really grateful to be a part of a club like this and hopefully we can achieve more good things together.’

“I can’t express how much I enjoy playing my football here, genuinely. It’s really nice to feel part of a family of football.

“I think that’s quite rare, in terms of everything we do on and off the pitch, in terms of community work and charities etc… I think it’s unique and to be a part of that is special.

“I think it’s important going into training every day really enjoying the company of your team-mates, being able to have a laugh and being able to push each other as well.

“If you’ve got a good relationship off the pitch, it naturally makes it easier to demand high standards from each other, and right now I think we’ve got a real good balance of youth and experience.

“I’m still pretty young but I’m probably in the middle of that because we’ve got a young team, but that dynamic and balance is really helpful.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said: “We are really pleased that Matt has agreed this new contract with the club.

“As we have seen from recent weeks, Matt is playing some brilliant football, developing in all areas of his game and it is a great time for him at the moment.

‘I know he is the kind of player that Celtic fans love and I know that, in turn, he loves it here.’

“Matt has so much to his game but always wants to learn, develop and grow further and from that perspective, together with the inherent talent he has, he really is a joy to coach and work with.

“I am delighted that he has signed his new deal and I am sure he will continue to make a massive contribution to the Club going forward.”

The blog will survive as long as the good posters respond to

one another, sometimes we all wonder why no one answers

what we think will prompt a response.

Personally I always try and answer any reply to me, but because

of the time difference it’s difficult.

Is it entitlement setting in ? are we too successful ?

Would the present day supporters travel down to Leeds, by foot

hitchhiking as we done then, walking over the Shap in a hoops

top, snow falling, or as I did, hitch hike to Milan for a Euro final.?

And all this after a decade of nothing.

    Don’t know?

Just my thoughts, and to let you know, think STIVS was having a

wee wobble, as we all have now and again.

And of course the negs encouraged by the hunterlopers will always

try and shut CQN down, it’s in their DNA

When you think of as Spanish as Spanish gets, you are automatically drawn to the pageantry and tradition of the bullfighting arena perhaps quicker than you are to the lights of the Bernabeu, Camp Nou or any other football stadium which might play host to the invention of theirs they call tiqui-taca.

And speaking of both football and bullfighting, one thing which has transferred from the plaza de toros to the stadiums of Spain is the ‘Ole’ chant – the recognition sung in unison by the crowd in the face of someone who is excelling in their art before their eyes.

And for one June night in 1967, this verbal applause to qualify ‘the well done’ wasn’t directed at an immaculately attired Spanish matador sword-in-hand, but a small-in-stature, mud-stained little Scotsman wearing green and white hoops by the name of Jimmy Johnstone.

For it was that night in Madrid in the Bernabeu stadium, during Alfredo Di Stefano’s testimonial match, that his Real Madrid team were put to the sword by Jinky, his feet provoked by the ‘Ole’s of the 120,000 strong crowd – most of whom were witnessing a sight the likes of which the Bernabeu had rarely if ever seen.

Celtic, who has been crowned European champions in Lisbon less than two weeks before, played Real Madrid off the park in a game that itself felt more like a championship final than a testimonial. And central to that performance was Jinky, who himself said it was his best ever game in a Celtic jersey.

Stay up to date with all the latest Celtic news from the Glasgow Live team across our social media channels.

In what was Celtic’s 65th game of the season, and with reserve keeper John Fallon keeping the Madrid attackers from getting on the scoresheet, the stage was set for Jinky to work his magic.

When he passed away in 2006, the Spanish press eulogised Johnstone with the utmost of praise for what he did during those 90 minutes, saying that, in the history of the club until that point, no one had ever seen a player take on and dribble past so many Real Madrid players as he had done.

And this was despite receiving his fair share of solid tackles – so much so that Bertie Auld took matters into his own hands and got sent off alongside Madrid player Amancio Amaro after squaring up to him to air his grievances.

It meant that, in an unforeseen turn of events, the great player that was Di Stefano, in his last match for the then six-time European Cup winners (five of which Di Stefano had participated in), ended up playing second fiddle to Johnstone as the star of the night.

This, even if Celtic’s stature as European Cup winners generated much respect among both players and public, one reflected in the very invitation by the (then) most successful club side in the world to play in a match of such reverence for them – the goodbye to their hero.

As mentioned, the ‘Oles’ from the crowd encouraged Johnstone, and Celtic, to show and prove their worth as champions of Europe, and, in a move that left three Madrid players for dead in the centre of the park, Jinky invented a pass for Bobby Lennon that resulted in Celtic scoring the only goal of the game for the Parkhead side.

The Spanish press labelled him both a ‘devil with spurs’ and ‘a loco with red hair’, as he terrorised the Madrid defence from his position on the right wing. Indeed, near the end of the match, none of the Madrid players would go near him.

It was said that the aforementioned Amaro was so annoyed at the ‘doing’ Johnstone and Celtic had given his team on what should have been a night of celebration for his side that he grabbed the trophy dished out at the end to Di Stefano in a fit.

Meanwhile, such was the reception Johnstone received, he was obligated to return to centre of the park to take the applause of the home crowd. And in a potent gesture, Johnstone picked up the ball and raised it above his head in recognition of the support, as would a bullfighter with the ears of a bull after a successful bullfight.

In goal that night for Madrid was Andres Junquera, making his debut for the club. Back in 2013, the keeper told Spanish newspaper La Nueva España how Johnstone, who he recalled as the “small player with the red hair” had won the game for Celtic.

And Junquera, who spent nine seasons between the sticks for Madrid, went as far as to label Johnstone “the best player of his era” having witnessed up close his performance that night.

It is also said that Madrid legends such as Gento, Pirri and Di Stefano himself were dumbfounded by Johnstone’s electric display, approaching Jinky’s teammates at the end of the game to ask them more about him as a player.

And while the match saw the 1966 European Champions humbled by the 1967 European Champions to disprove on home turf that they were the better team, the Spanish press acknowledged that Celtic were the rightful and just victors of the tie.

Spanish football daily Marca offered a “We Thank You, Celtic” in the following day’s paper, detailing how the “great European champions scored a deserved victory over worthy opponents Madrid”.

And they finished with a hat-tip to Jock Stein’s side by saying “may the football Celtic play stay among us in Spanish style”.

Stay with them it must have done, if only in the minds of those that were there to witness it.

It wouldn’t be nearly 40 years later until November of 2005 that the Bernabeu would repeat the reception they gave to Johnstone with that of another opposition player who played Madrid off the park.

    His name? Ronaldinho.
