Chance for champions to extend lead over St Mirren

191

Two weeks ago, Motherwell were neck-and-neck with Celtic at the top of the table.  A home defeat to St Mirren and another reversal at Ibrox has seen them slip to fourth in the table, but the devil is in the detail.

The Lanarkshire side battered St Mirren but failed to make any of their 20 attempts count, while even the home manager at Ibrox admitted his side were fortunate to take all points.  What Stuart Kettlewell has achieved since taking over from Steven Hammell in February has been incredible.

While Celtic can expect a greater challenge than last week, Motherwell know exactly what is in store for them tomorrow.  Celtic scored six goals across their last two league games, that’s as many as Motherwell have scored in the league all season.  When the champions hit form, no one in Scotland can withstand them.

After making only one appearance last season, Scott Bain is set to double that number tomorrow, due to the suspension of Joe Hart.  He will have an important role to play.

The early kick-off gives us the chance to extend our lead at the top of the table to five points over challengers, St Mirren, on a temporary basis, anyway.  Saints travel to Kilmarnock later, but a win for Celtic would take the wind out of the sails of anyone else with title aspirations.

I`d say that the desire to criticise the Board rather than ackwoledge our success over the the last decade is another factor

Surprised you made that comment HS, the board should never ever be beyond criticism , when deserved !!

  2. DONE DEAL: ‘GRATEFUL’ O’RILEY SIGNS FOR FOUR YEARS

    0

By CQN Magazine on 30th September 2023 Latest News

MATT O’RILEY has pledged his immediate future to Celtic by signing a four-year deal today.

The announcement comes just 24 hours after the news Reo Hatate had also agreed a contract extension as Brendan Rodgers continues to consolidate the backbone of his squad.

O’Riley becomes the EIGHTH Bhoy to sign on in recent times following skipper Callum McGregor, Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, Liel Abada, Anthony Ralston, Stephen Welsh and, of course, Hatate.

The 22-year-old playmaker, who signed in a bargain £1.5million switch from English third-tier MK Dons in January 2022, said: “It’s probably hard to put it into a short sentence, but I think everybody knows how much I enjoy playing here, especially at Celtic Park because I don’t think you get that anywhere else.

“I’ve said before that I’m just really grateful to be a part of a club like this and, hopefully, we can achieve more good things together.

“I can’t express how much I enjoy playing my football here, genuinely. It’s really nice to feel part of a family of football.

“I think that’s quite rare, in terms of everything we do on and off the pitch, in terms of community work and charities etc. I think it’s unique and to be a part of that is special.”

The London-born former Danish Under-21 international, speaking to Celtic TV, added: “I think it’s important going into training every day really enjoying the company of your team-mates, being able to have a laugh and being able to push each other, as well.

“If you’ve got a good relationship off the pitch, it naturally makes it easier to demand high standards from each other, and right now I think we’ve got a real good balance of youth and experience.

“I’m still pretty young, but I’m probably in the middle of that because we’ve got a young team, but that dynamic and balance is really helpful.”

O’Riley is poised to make his 81st appearance for the Hoops in today’s 12.30pm kick-off against Motherwell at Fir park.

The smooth midfielder has notched four goals this term – and 12 in total – since his arrival when he hit the ground running in his new career at the champions.

  3. Wee Jinky eh ?

I was so fortunate to witness that phenomenal talent.

Bobby Murdoch came close to stealing my young bhoys

idolation but the wee mhan cruised it.

Had a few beers with most of the Lions over the years in

Bairds bar, and believe me, most down to earth bhoys

you could ever hope to meet.

Most profound moment I ever had, and realised how much

the game has changed nowadays, with all the mega bucks

    being offered.

Coming back from the game at Celtic park, Jinky , retired

for a few years, standing outside the Barra’s

“ Jimmy fancy a beer in Bairds ?

“ luv tae Mick, but need to stay at the stall, need the money

    WTF

This was the best football player in the world, don’t have to

believe me, just ask any of the older Real Madrid supporters.

Now we’ve got some wannabees collecting mullions ???

Thank god got that off my chest lol.

  6. Great news that Matt O’Riley has signed a new deal.

One of the great wins of the last controversial transfer window may well be Celtic turning down Leeds United’s 11 mn offer for the bhoy.

Brendan will make help make him into one of our best midfielders for a long while and his UCL experience over the next couple of seasons could make him the real deal

Poor blog is dying on it arse.”

Been thinking the same for a while.

I feel that the repetition of MSSM nonsense by posters offering `their own opinions` is a big factor.

What do you think is the main cause for the decline?

    ——–

HS: As Mick indicates, apathy about acknowledging far less engaging with posters who raise – mibby not earthshaking – but on-point topics is one factor. Almost seems a post needs to be exceptional or controversial – or else part of any of some of the established blog cliques or niches – to merit engagement or a hat-tip.

Mick himself is good and generous at courtesy and reciprocity IMO. I try to do same if I get a mention but sometimes may miss comments due like Mick says to time difference and not reading back every time.

Aside from that, there are some who, ironically, love nothing more than a bitchy, snide or supposedly superior put-down of their fellow fhans and contributions. That’s some demotivating kind of supercilious pish right there, but it happens. Must give them a kick or something – sad to see and say. Everybody’s different tho.

As you say, tho, it could be the board stuff but I don’t think it’s about the content.

As an older demographic, a proportion of this forum will simply be passing away by age atrition.

We’re quick to claim to be the best supporters in the world (to be honest I think guys who stick by their shite teams for years and years without seeing a win really have special gumption)…

But we’re mibby not the best bloggers in the world ;)

  10. Imo, there are a number of contributors to CQN who would like nothing better than that it closed down. They come on and almost always they attack Paul67 personally or the Board. They never seem to have anything positive to say. Why? Maybe they want to build up their own or mate’s site; maybe they are hun interlopers; maybe they are just happier being negative……

  14. The blog is busy when there are more negatives than positives happening with Celtic. Just like newspapers, bad news sells. Also, there a very few times now when that does happen, and those who have been waiting to pounce do so all at the same time :)). Some are negative folk who are unable to extract themselves from that sort of thinking, others, well they take every chance possible to have a go at the most successful team in the 21st, and most of the 20th century, in Scotland. Imagine having to follow a team that pertains to this great institution only to see the reality stare them in the face when Celtic PLC disclose their financial results or when Celtic FC keep winning titles, doubles, and trebles, sometimes quadruples. It’s no wonder they fling themselves wholeheartedly into showing our faults at the first opportunity. They are more to be pitied than scorned! por cierto

  18. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Great news about Two and Matt.

When you take into account new signings this summer the majority of the squad are now contracted to 2026 or beyond.

Here’s hoping that brings stability but also a more targeted, intelligent recruitment strategy over the next 4 windows.

Tweak the squad with a handful of upgrades plus one or two rock stars.

  19. I, for one, want to congratulate the Board. Brilliant work getting these Bhoys to sign up.

    Seconded.

    Great business by the club.

  20. Bhoyed by my stroke of luck last week, took Celtic to either win -2, -3, -4 today. Aberdeen draw. And a cheeky wee double pairing on any of those outcomes will do nicely, thankyou very much. Bet sensibly!

  21. Great news indeed especially when Brendan suggested the other day that he would understand if Matt wanted to consider a move to a better league.

Biggest worry today is that any of the back four get injured. Fingers and toes crossed.

  23. In goals, Bain starts.

In defence, it is the same back four that started at the Tony Macaroni with Gustaf Lagerbielke lining up beside Liam Scales. Alistair Johnston and Greg Taylor start in the full back berths.

Callum McGregor is joined by Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley in the middle of the park. The latter pair committed their long-term future to the club this week.

In attack, Kyogo is through the middle with Daizen Maeda on the left and Yang on the right.

On the bench: Siegrist, Phillips, Palma, Turnbull, Holm, Oh, Tomoki, Ralston & Forrest

Excellent summation – says it all really.

Being positive banishes negativity….our existence this century is wrapped in record-breaking honours – great managers and a board who have made us the most financially successful sporting institution ever in Scotland.

Much to be happy about and much still to achieve from a rock-solid base, with the backing of magnificent fan base – well 99.75% of it, to be strictly accurate. HH
