City Council plans to eliminate fans and the poor

223

A fan-led petition to persuade Glasgow City Council to drop plans to eliminate parking within a mile of Celtic Park on match days is open.  Tenement housing in this area of Parkhead was cleared in recent times and the Council hope to sell vacant land for more expensive housing, without the match day parking that has been a feature of Parkhead for over 130 years.

This is a well-worn and shameful path.  Cities move poor families out of their housing, destroy whatever could inhibit their ability to attract top price from property developers, then move more affluent residents in.

Match day parking will remain, but it will be moved to areas where the Council are not hoping to sell land.  The problem will be compounded, as fans will have to arrive earlier and leave the area later, as the closest will have a 1-mile walk, while the farthest away could easily walk twice that distance to reach the stadium.  Public transport options remain possible for only a few hundred people, nowhere near the 60,000 required.

In a crowded field of appalling political decisions, this stands out as it was home-grown in Glasgow.  Please sign the petition here to demand the Council think again.

    ………………………………………………………..

If in fact this small producer has come up with 30 units, I think that is praiseworthy and should not be belittled.

  2. CELTIC MAC,

People of my generation and earlier had no option to be living in the likes of Parkhead. While I was in the “new” St Michael’s Primary in the early 60s, I reckon about half my class left about 30 minutes early in order to get the buses that took them to their new homes in the likes of Easterhouse and Cranhill. Much of the Parkhead I grew up in no longer exists. The Council could obviously plan things better, imo.

  3. Just back from breaking curfew, there is a big park about 200 yards from where I live. Walked down met absolutely no one just 2 or 3 cars passed down road. Saw just one man in the Park, he was leaving as I was going in, I walked a circuit of the Park, absolutely no one there but myself.

It felt like a Sci-Fi movie.

Back in jail now, it’s going to be a long few weeks.

Every single small effort in producing the equipment needed to save lives during this crisis should be applauded.

Your ring leader remark was crass.

    You’re better than that.

Lot of fine buildings still around. Streets too. Its’ the lack of planning that gets me as well. And, on the one hand allowing houses to be built, all with a driveway, only to tell local or visiting Celtic supporters that they are not welcome. Hope yer well.

  7. Celtic have know that the council planned car parking restrictions for years, yet when land was for sale right beside barrowfield training centre (250 car space) they stood by and done nothing. Could easily had bought up and used it as carpark for barrowfield and games.

In fact the plans to improve barrowfield would have seen 48 car parking spaces when they could easily have added about 350 car parking spaces in that ground without compromising any full size pitches I.e 3 outdoors and 1 indoor.

So that chance to add 600 car parking spaces missed because the club would rather argue than plan ahead for us supporters.

Now if I had my way celtic would go and get the land at barrowfield and progress as above.

Actually redevelop the stadium parking plan to ensure max use of land (poor planning cost about 150 parking spaces in the stadium envious).

Maybe cheap to build steel one story carpark you see at Asda’s behind the east and west end as well as, at disabled parking section just purchased on janefield street. There is an old factory there to which looks like it has had better days which may one day be an option, who knows

Talk to the forge and retail park etc. about renting/buy up some of thier never used land.

Purchase land close to stadium and run a shuttle bus to stadium. Lots of land around Sheffield stadium, Oakland, heading towards cambuslang and shettilson etc..

Multistory car park is not financially viable far to expensive.

The point is celtic could if they wished find solutions, all the moaning and complaining can be therapeutic but bottom line is if there was a will there is a way and if it impacts on attendance you can be sure celtic will act, it’s very much reactive when supporters want proactive. Get it sorted celtic.

  8. Does anyone remember being at meetings years ago I think when fergus took charge about getting a train station opened on London road opposite the stadium and buying up land??

Nothing ever got done then, this was before all the old tenements around Celtic park were knocked down. Was it called the Green Triangle?

My memory is terrible, I remember being there as part of the affiliated supporters clubs, I’m sure.

Stephbhoy- agree with some of that,Celtic are a big employer on a match day,and bring a lot of wealth to the city, through the support, public transport in and around CP and the Emirates is pitiful, no effort to try and improve it in last few years, it’s probably worse actually. HH

  10. !!Bada Bing!! on

Philbhoy- apology accepted sir, please accept mine.If the news report had emphasized, this was a new initiative to manufacture ventilators, which it is,it would have read so much better IMO,figures stating UK possibly needs 30,000,.The bigger picture developing, is the Government have been shamelessly neglectful, in reacting to this.Actually enjoying Piers Morgan in the morning, ripping these liars a new one.HH

  11. !!BADA BING!!

    No problem!

Agree governments tend to be shameless and also enjoying Piers Morgan.

Normally watch bbc news in the morning, however as the girls are working from home I’ve been watching the news channel of their choice.

    Take care.

I’m sure when this new ventilator system was featured on the news last week , Mercedes/McLaren said they had the potential to produce 1000 of these crucial ventilator parts a day. I think they will make a huge contribution in the coming weeks.

The Government on the other hand…………….

  13. enjoying Piers Morgan

Sorry … cant agree.. his tenure at the sun…NOTW.

    Not for me.

Adi- I get it re PM,when we were on strike (fire service),he was editor of the Mirror. Every news organisation, tv and press got right in about us,without knowing the facts,Piers Morgan backed us through his paper, and on Question Time, so I’ve always had a soft spot for him. On Good Morning Britain Mon-Wed,he gets in about these slippery ratbag politicians, and doesn’t let them off the hook, the Transport Minister got absolutely reemed today.HH

  16. glendalystonsils on

    GENE

I stand corrected . The aim ,I believe , was to use these gadgets in order to free up ventilators for more serious cases.

  17. Modern cities and affluent societies insist on public transport and mass rapid transit. Let’s get the debate where it should be.

  18. !!BADA BING!! on 1ST APRIL 2020 7:33 PM

The council and spt need to develop a transport plan fit for purpose for the eastend, the restricted parking on event days will be bad news. Within the clydegate area they are talking about adding 20000 people and multiple businesses too. Add celtic park, the velodrome, the forge, inmarket and retail outlets and you have a hell of a lot of demand for public transport and council and spt will need to look at sorting it sooner rather than later.

I think improvement in public transport should be done alongside celtic addressing car parking spaces for supporters who dont and/ or cant use public. The provision of 5000 parking spaces in and around celtic park would go a long way to making celtic good neigbours while meeting supporters needs. That is a win win and the cost of parking could offset the price of land purchase and shuttle transfer on match days where needed.

Celtic just need to get it sorted and use the opportunity to force the council and spt to address the shite public transport services in the area for supporters and get the support of the locals to sort out transport.

You don’t have to leave your house to exercise, i do 30 minutes daily , jogging on spot and shadow boxing to music. Really missing the weights and gym which is by far the best exercise for keeping in shape, not to mention the nice views lol.

I also walk at 1 am for the fresh air and I’ve yet to see one single person, the risk must be miniscule. If your going to get this horrible disease the supermarket is a far higher risk imo.

Just learned of the first person i know to succumb to Covid 19, guy from Cambusbarron Stirling about 48 year old.

Scotland’s jump from 13 to 41 deaths is alarming. They say patients die 2 to 3 weeks after infection. The Sevco, Leverkusen game was 17 days ago, any link?

  24. I’m pleased that UEFA have completely ignored the null and void lobby and have gone down the road of finishing the season whenever that may be.

That’s undoubtedly driven by concerns about tv money for the big leagues.

The concerns in Scotland and other less tv orientated leagues will be season ticket renewals which must for all clubs now be pretty much a trickle of renewals if not a complete stop.

Scottish football clubs will be faced with an existential threat in the months ahead and that may force the hand of the SPFL to act unilaterally as is their right and declare the season finished as is with a start date in September for the new season.
