Club 9, selling empire and Rangers European Champions 1967

628

Club 9 Sports released a priceless statement tonight indicating they are considering an investment in Rangers only as part of a consortium and will not be bidding for the club on their own.

So far, so clear.  They then entertain us with a remarkable interpretation of liquidation, saying:

“We understand that it has been strongly rumored that our group planned to “liquidate” the club. It should be made clear that any party that attempts to acquire the club, eliminate the debts, affect a turnaround, invest monies and put the club back on solid ground is in fact “saving” the club from liquidation and preserving its past and its future.

“In an asset purchase, all of the good and valuable assets (records, marks, names, trophies, players, staff, history) are preserved and separated from the bad and harmful liabilities (tax bills, bad contracts, creditors), which have put the club into administration and which act to force the entirety into liquidation.”

“Saving” the club from liquidation by putting the entirety into liquidation.  Don’t laugh, they honestly wrote this.

For the record, you can’t sell history or records.  Can you imagine?  Britain could flog off our whole empire period and maybe use the current economic crisis in Greece to buy their classical period from them. Aristotle, from Scotland, perhaps.

Personally, I would love to be the first Briton to hold aloft the European Cup, maybe Billy McNeill would sell me that record?  He’s had it for 45 years now, it can’t be worth that much to him anymore.

I wonder how much Messi would sell his record breaking Champions League history?  Barca are playing catch-up with Real Madrid in the European Champions stakes.  Instead of buying expensive footballers they could just offer Real cash for some of the trophies won during the 1950s.

David Murray should have saved himself all the trouble and just offered our old board a few million for the Lisbon history, just think:

Rangers, European Champions, 1967. Opportunity missed. Murray should have had a word with Club 9.

I’m enjoying these guys already, hope they are given the green light tomorrow.  What terrified Brian Kennedy floats my boat. They even finished off with some sweet platitudes about a “legendary fan base”.  I think we have a winner….

  7. OK! OK! OK!

So we share our TV & Sponsorship doe. League gets more competitive. We lose and draw more games. CQN goes into meltdown more frequently. Then we sit and wonder why we’re not as good as we were in 2011/2012.

    Brilliant!!!

    Who gets the blame.

Sammi – no he’s gone cause we can’t afford him

Broonie – nope he’s gone too

Maybe Fraser Forster – Wait a minute he’s away as well.

Oh! I’ve got it. How about our 18/19 year old wingers brought through from the U19’s cause we are good at expecting loads from them when they will not be at their best until they are 27 or 28 when, yip, you guessed it, they will be gone.

    Perfect!!!

    MWD FORWARD LOOKING TO THAT.

    1) “i dont buy the stuff about injury crisis etc…, we could justify having 5 players for every position in that case and at right back we’re getting close!”

We had such an injury crisis. It happened and it is predictable. Next time it may be strikers, or wingers. This time it was CBs. I agree that a squad sizeneeds to be controlled. That’s why I favour versatile players like Ledley, Mulgreew, Matthews, Broonie and Sammi because they help with the cover. But our fans end up complaining about round holes/ square pegs.

As a fan, it is easy for you not to buy the comfort of a large squad. Your job is not at stake after bad results.

    2) “and to the guy who thinks if we give our money out we’ll be even worse than before when it come to europe, are you serious? is that not what watty said, what 2 million pounds will make a huge difference to our euro performances?”

Very Serious. And if Walter said it, that’s just another informed opinion. It does not make me wrong nor you right that he spoke thus.

    3) “jock said celtic tops dont shrink to fit, but i think we would all agree they do now because things change”

    They always did. It was not a true statement when Jock said it either. Frank Munro, Dowie, Roy Kay etc;

    4) “what is so hard to understand if we dont change then we die as well ”

Nothing at all. It is a simple concept to the point of being simplistic. It stems from the false premise that you imagine I am proposing some kind of status quo. I am merely proposing a different form of change from yours, because I am not convinced yours will have the desired effect you imagine. A couple of drops of our largesse will not make Scottish football more competitive. Celtic changing to a new more competitive environment will. Our development squad played Next Gen football this season; that is a great development. I want the same raising of standards for our first team

think of humankind – man needs woman to procreate and repopulate the earth

celtic need other clubs to continue as a viable business

otherwise we will be playing in a semi-professional league and will celtic will be done as a full-time professional club, is that what you want?

You make a case for Ki being likely to go but you did say he (they) will go. I was questioning your translation of the conditional into the certain.

As for the Hooper argument, that is all pure attribution. “He looks like he does not appreciate us” just reads, to me, as “I (TSD) don’t appreciate him”

We can replace him with better. We may replace him with better. But, if he is a 20 goal SPL scorer at the end of the year, we have not produced enough of them in the past 4 years.

You cannot use the normal business comparison. If the other three agents go out of business you take their customers and get richer.

If it were a four team league you operated in you would not take their supporters and would have no one to play. To stay in business you would want them to stay in business too.

In football that requires clubs operating according to their natural income and finding their level. The problem in Scotland is that the supporter base of two clubs is so huge they will always be favourites if they manage therir football properly.

The obvious answer is not to share the natural income but release the biggest income generators to find their natural level elsewhere. Those left behind would find themselves in a truly competitive league where the income gap is nothing like so biased.

What stops the natural way of things taking place is a mixture of envy and stupidity in Scotland and fear in England by the clubs who would lose position as a result. So we are stuck, sharks in a goldfish bowl.

“realistic optimism = knowing we will never leave scotland we are trapped, so lets make the best of what we have. ”

Naw. It means arguing that your view is right because it is. Circular sophistry. I’ve been told lots of things would never happen (fall of Commmunism, anyone?), but they did. A gap has already emerged whereby smaller clubs in bigger leagues can afford more than bigger clubs in smaller leagues. Celtic is not the only club so affected. We can stay in the ghetto for a slow death or we can make a run for it.

“some of the best ideas are those that are simple so i’ll take that as a compliment ”

I said simple verging on simplistic. Simple is good. Simplistic is pejorative.

Not all change is good. There are evolutionary dead ends. We need to discriminate which changes will help us and which will kill us.

  23. Some of the comments tonight re sacrificing our financial and playing advantage to ensure the other clubs are successful are breathtaking.

If we go down that route why NOT vote to ensure RFC(IA) remain in the SPL?

Heck why not go so far as to underwrite their debt to other Scottish clubs, HMRC and local suppliers?

What about a tax on our ticket sales to go to the SPL and SFA?

Hand over our advantages in good management, wise investment to ensure they can continue to cheat us?

Continue to treat our fans as criminal?

    Heck no.

Instead let us hire our management to teach them how to run a club prudently, let our model be the template for other clubs to follow.

And let us make money doing it.
