Commercial consequences of Ramsden

717

The commercial consequences of Sunday’s Ramsdens’ Cup Final result didn’t occur to me until Celtic released season ticket news yesterday.  Over the years, when possible, Celtic and Rangers released season ticket renewal notices on the back of a favourable result.

As well as a party at Ibrox on Sunday night, the wheels would have been ready to roll with photographs of newly acquired silverware and a plea from the most expensive failed-yet-retained manager in history to renew early.  There may even have been a price increase this year, slipped in amid the feel-good factor.

There has been a lot of talk about how critical season ticket sales are to Newco Rangers but we are no different.  The circa 40,000 people who commit to support Celtic each season are the rock bed upon which all plans are made.  Sure, Champions League money is critical, but without this volume of season ticket sales there would be no Champions League money.  The season ticket is the Badge of Honour in Scottish football, during these critical years more than any other time.

In 2012 when we campaigned to deny a new club access to an elevated position in Scottish football we did so in the knowledge that competition in the league would be different going forward.  This was our preference.  While actual attendances have often been below season ticket levels I know that to a man, woman and child, everyone who pitches up to watch Celtic appreciates being apart from the scourge which afflicted us for so many years.  This is the way I like my football, long may it last.

  1. Toronto Raptors centre Jonas Valanciunas was arrested early Monday morning in Wasaga Beach and charged with drunk driving.

According to an OPP release, open beer bottles were spotted in Valanciunas’ vehicle as he went through a drive-thru at 2:30 a.m. Police tracked the vehicle. After investigation, Valanciunas was placed under arrest, charged with “Exceed 80 mgs.” It’s not clear who, if anyone else, was with him.

The team was in the midst of a second day off after back-to-back games Friday and Saturday. It’s also not clear why the 21-year-old Lithuanian was in the summer hangout, 130 kilometres north of Toronto, on a dreary spring day.

It should be noted here that DUI is an offence against the Criminal Code of Canada and not the Provincial Highway Traffic act, as such if found guilty he will have a criminal record and could be ordered into rehab.

His teammates and coach are supportive of him saying he is just a young lad who has made a mistake.

The local media although not sympathetic are not crucifying him either.

Lets face it, it was only a DUI which could have took a life and not a song about being a refugee….and then again why would he, he’s a Lithuanian :-)))))

    Again I agree…

but was merely pointing out that a tiny, non-established religious group with limited access to many offices was not likely to be in a position to have access to upper echelons of political power!

The UK like most (all?) Nation states has biases legal and cultural as a result of their histories. The position now is much better than 50 years ago, much much better than 100 years ago, much much much better…etc etc…

Tonight has been another learning experience.

Calling black people monkeys can’t really be racist because they’re not monkeys. Calling Indian people p#k#s can’t be racist because they’re not from Pakistan. Calling travellers f&£kin pikeys can’t be racist as they’re not really pikeys.

People who want to preserve the core values of the club and stand up for a demographic of the club need to get off their high horses and stop being so pious.

Sad day when an apparent majority of the celtic support share these views.
