Commercial consequences of Ramsden

717

The commercial consequences of Sunday’s Ramsdens’ Cup Final result didn’t occur to me until Celtic released season ticket news yesterday.  Over the years, when possible, Celtic and Rangers released season ticket renewal notices on the back of a favourable result.

As well as a party at Ibrox on Sunday night, the wheels would have been ready to roll with photographs of newly acquired silverware and a plea from the most expensive failed-yet-retained manager in history to renew early.  There may even have been a price increase this year, slipped in amid the feel-good factor.

There has been a lot of talk about how critical season ticket sales are to Newco Rangers but we are no different.  The circa 40,000 people who commit to support Celtic each season are the rock bed upon which all plans are made.  Sure, Champions League money is critical, but without this volume of season ticket sales there would be no Champions League money.  The season ticket is the Badge of Honour in Scottish football, during these critical years more than any other time.

In 2012 when we campaigned to deny a new club access to an elevated position in Scottish football we did so in the knowledge that competition in the league would be different going forward.  This was our preference.  While actual attendances have often been below season ticket levels I know that to a man, woman and child, everyone who pitches up to watch Celtic appreciates being apart from the scourge which afflicted us for so many years.  This is the way I like my football, long may it last.

Protest against the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act

Anyone who is free is welcome to join the protest against this discriminatory piece of legislation which will take place at the SNP Conference being held in Aberdeen this weekend.

A coach will leave George Square on Saturday morning at 9.30am and the plan is to return from Aberdeen at around 4.30pm.

There is no Celtic fixture scheduled for this Saturday so if you would like a day in Aberdeen protesting against this Act which seeks to criminalise football fans just for being such, go the the Fans Against Criminalisation website and book your place on the bus. There is no charge for the trip we just need your presence.

“Ireland should be free but not Scotland. We need to be subservient. Boris Johnston for PM”

    ==

Point of order. Scotland and the Scots are free and have been for many many hundreds of years. The vote is in regards to ending a partnership with England now that BEB (British Empire bank) is bust and no longer benefits ‘the Scots’ in anyway. Please stop with the revisionist bullcrap about freedom and independence it offends those of us who have lived through armed oppression, occupation and the denial of true democracy. And just as another wee reminder the Scots were major players in the efforts to subjugate the Irish, the saltire waving Blood of our Blood (copyright Alex Salmond) continue to thwart efforts at ‘normalizing’ NI. In fact the ‘Fleg protesters’ have a lot in common with those advocating Scottish independence “democracy is not working because we aren’t getting what we want; It’s just not fair” –sound familiar? Do not compare Irelands struggle for freedom with what is being offered to Scotland in September.

Sincere apologies to those not interested in the Divorce debate but enough revisionist crap if you want to vote yes do so but kindly refrain from comparing Irelands’ centuries of misery with a vote about breaking up a business partnership.

My post is in relation to revisonist nonsense about freedom and independance spouted by some and the oft used farcial comparsion of Irelands struggule for freedom and a democratic vote in September.

No where does it mention anything about voting NO it simply asks some in the YES camp to refrain from insulting our intelligence.

  19. John,

The entire story of MIH and it’s banking relationships is worthy , in fact demands, a public enquiry.

this is a business which racked up a debt of close to £1 Billion on assets which were ultimately valued in-house by an employee of MIH.

Those assets were subsequently sold at enormous losses, which meant the debt was never fully repaid, or even close to it. The bank received effectively a few pennies in the £ on their debt, and this is a bank owned in significant part by the UK taxpayer. Tens of millions of completely unsupportable borrowing was funneled towards Rangers Football Club, to allow an egomaniac his moment in the spotlight.

I don’t like much of what Rangers Football Club stood for. The employment policies were a national disgrace, but there are many many decent Rangers fans who’s club was killed by David Murray. He can bleat all he likes about being staggered by Craig Whyte’s actions and about being duped by him. But the Rangers fans I know blame Murray for what happened to their club.

His “business empire” now has a going concern warning by it’s auditors, Murray himself has admitted its time is coming to an end. Yet he still has his knighthood, and thanks to the utterly shameful and craven behaviour of the SFA he hasn’t had to face an independent enquiry into his running of Rangers. He should on all available evidence be banned for life from the Sport. Publicly outed and appropriately punished. However we have the invisible man as CEO and the utterly weak and conflicted Campbell Ogilvie as President, so we know they won’t act voluntarily.

However Karma has reached MIH, sad as that is for innocent employees, although fully deserved for Murray. He may think his running of Rangers and it’s consequences are in the past, and he has nothing to fear. He’s wrong…..in my view he will be fully exposed for what he did to Rangers and to Scottish Football.

There is a direct comparison in the self determination principal, like the Falkland islanders we sent thousands of young men risking their lives half around the world to defend the falkland islanders right to self determination or was it for oil rights ?

Its the principle of being free from westminster we have in common with Ireland, of course Scotlands historical sufferings are not the same as Irelands i have read very few and certainly not from commentators which are worthy of reading going down that line

As for me being a yes voter having similarities with the fleg protesters in Belfast ? i fear the simple concept of independence from westminster is beyond your abilities, the clue is in the flegs
