Commons, Hartson and some real Celtic heroes

907

Had a great time at the Celtic Supporters Association Rally last night.  It was a great celebration of all that is good about our club, with thousands of pounds raised for the John Hartson Foundation.  Neil Lennon spoke warmly of John, about his courage and ability.  As well as recognising the great achievements of this season, CSA Player of the Year, Kris Commons, could not hide his disappointment that we are not going for a treble next week.  Hibs will have their hands full with him at Hampden next week.

I’ve never heard a footballer talk as John Hartson did.  He was clearly emotional as he took the microphone from the manager but soon go into his flow.  He told us about the three hours spent in the car before telling his family the diagnosis of his illness.  His achievements as a footballer are remarkable and John is very proud of them.  His absence through injury in Seville clearly hurt.  Did it pass a crucial advantage to Porto?  John thinks so.

His own failings were put out there with the disarming confidence that only someone who has climbed a few personal mountains can do.  The ‘hangers-on’, who filled his days a few years ago, had their cards marked.

Reamonn Gormley’s parents, Jim and Ann, were also guests of the Association.  Jim asked me to pass on a thank you from him and Ann to all Celtic fans for what they have done for them and the Thai Tims in the last two years.  Their world will never be the same again but the support they have received from the Celtic Family has overwhelmed them.  Your community has done very well, but there is nothing new in that.

With supporters like we have our club is in good hands.   Well done to all who carry out the thankless tasks running busses, organising fundraisers and keeping the moral compass pointing in the right direction.

Have you ordered your Willie Wallace autobiography yet? Signed copies available if you do so now……

  8. The script about the founding of legendary Scottish soccer team Celtic Football Club is billed as “Gangs of New York” meets “Field of Dreams.”

Writer/director/actor Peter Mullan’s Paradise, a movie about the founding of legendary Scottish soccer team Celtic Football Club by a priest in 1887, is creating buzz among buyers.

The movie, billed as Gangs of New York meets Field of Dreams in Victorian Glasgow, is being shopped in Cannes by movie director and producer Peter Broughan.

PHOTOS: Star-Studded Jury Lands in Cannes

Broughan, whose directing résumé includes Rob Roy, told The Hollywood Reporter he was exceptionally busy because he has a “project that everyone wants.”

The movie details the story of Irish Marist priest Brother Walfrid, who founded the soccer club at a catholic church in Glasgow on November 6, 1887.

Buyers have been keen to talk, and market insiders are abuzz with reports that Daniel Day-Lewis has been linked to the role of Walfrid.

While nothing is signed, Mullan is reportedly expected to reach out to Day-Lewis as he would be the perfect choice to portray the soccer-loving priest.

Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup in 1967. The team is one of the most supported sporting entities in the world and is estimated to have more than a million fans in the U.S. alone.

Broughan is a lifelong fan of the team, nicknamed “the Hoops.”

  9. Weefrathe, you bloody clown. I was drinking tea, when I read your last post. Its gone down my nose and splattered all over the laptop.

  10. Gordon64

Totally agree. My abiding memory is leaving the stadium at the end. We must have travelled for about 30 mins before we saw anyone NOT wearing the hoops.

Also, there were around 20,000 Porto fans there. I never saw ANY until we got into the ground!

When i think of all the times 60,000 attend CP then visualise Seville, there must have been over 100,000 there! Easily!

Different genre that is more of a Horror/Disaster movie.

If the two Spivco amigos are involved they will raise lots of money from the Bears and the film will never see the light of day.

  15. Canalamar

    I’ll be deid by 2030 :)

If I were an investor and they go belly up Id be asking the SFA why they gave a questionable set up the Ok?

The SFA might withstand crys for change from within the game but this saga will not be confined to that realm.

Misuse of insolvency laws, possible fraud, other clubs losing out because the SFA put The Rangers needs above theirs. It is becoming uncontainable.

There is also a poltical dimension.Quite how a government can stand aside and say nothing about the running of a game that is part of the social fabric of our nation beggars belief.

Those seeking to stay part of the UK could make enormous poltical capital for their cause from the governments non intervention and not nsisting on proper football governance.

    Its gonna run and run.

  16. Jimbo

I recall going to work on the Tuesday morning

before the game and the roads were very quiet.

The Vogue was empty Tuesday night.

I realised everyone had left for Seville.

    And started to panic.

Me and VP were the only ones left.

  17. Billy Bhoy

I used to live in Edinburgh when 80000 Welshmen used to come up for the Rugby. The city didn’t seem to groan the way Seville ( a bigger city I think) did under the weight of the invasion. Before the match my mates and I had some Paella in the company of a Porto fan who was awestruck by the Celtic support – he’d met people who’d travelled from South Africa, Australia, America and Italy to see Celtic play. He reckoned that the Portuguese diaspora was bigger than the Scottish and Irish and yet he doubted if a single fan from outside Portugal had travelled to support Porto.
