Creative options

968

Since July I’ve written about the over-dependence we have on Kris Commons as a creative player.  He’s pretty much our only option, and if he’s not fancied, injured, suspended or just off-form, we look like a team full of energy but without a key to open the door.

It may be that Ronny doesn’t figure on having a classic No. 10 in his team, and it’s more than possible that we won’t play one against European heavyweights, but against packed SPFL defences, we need someone who can create space in dangerous areas.

As we mentioned last month, some years ago Celtic reportedly looked at Bosnian international, Semir Stilic, while he was at Lech Poznan.  His star faded before a journey through Ukrainian and Turkish football before he returned to Poland with Wisla Krakow 12 months ago on an 18 month contract.  Since then he’s been a sensation and has kept Wisla in touch with the top of the table.

He’s refused a new contract offer from Wisla and is subject to a bid from Dinamo Zagreb, thought to be in the region of €250k.  He’s likely to be on circa €2k per week.  We’ve scouted the player, he’s soon out of contract, going cheap, on low wages, on form and we’re short of what he can give.

This is the kind of player Dinamo Zagreb pick up for buttons and enables them to compete as effectively as they did against Celtic with a fraction of our budget.  He has the making of an effective January signing.

I dont believe so. The debt incurred by the dream team prior to Martins tenure was cleared up by our success during Martins tenure. FFP also changed from a 5 year period to a 3 year period quite some time after he had left.

Celtic were in debt at the end of MON’s tenure and Strachan had to make a massive cut to the wage bill. This was even after another fully subscribed share issue where MON and Eddie Jordan invested heavily.

you’d be surprised how little the Seville adventure earned the club.

  4. Awe naw – that’s why I wasn’t sure. I know it was £40m total losses under MON but I can’t remember the breakdown.

I don’t buy into the old pals act. If you think, Hartson or Sutton, write a piece in the papers, with Lennon at the forefront of their motivation…. that’s just crazy.

I agree Lennon wasn’t perfect. He resided over some really abject displays.

The one fundamental though was that Celtic absolutely coasted the premier division last year. Only one game away from being undefeated throughout the entire league campaign.

A mitagated disaster looms large on the horizon.

Why should we be content with the level in which Celtic currently operate.?

    It is rank rotten

Sutton and Hartson are a couple of tadgers, bad mouthing the club for a couple of quid especially hartson working for that rag (sun) and not forgetting putting the boot in to the Celtic support after the dundee ‘riot’ even though he wasn’t there and Sutton, what he knows about managing a football club wouldn’t fill the back of a fag packet.

  7. I forgot the sheep were playing today, just found out the score. Our last minute goal up there is looking a lot more important to us now than i thought at the time, even it did win me money that day.

Personally i think they will push us all the way now. Big game tomorrow night, hope Ronny and the team are up for it.

CQNers have identified a number of targets on this blog- cheap, available etc. One would’ve thought of bloggers can identify targets, paid scouts should be doing so too.

You are at the wind up. Please tell me you don’t actually believe that statement.

  9. In this transfer window we need:

    A quality dominant Centre half

A defensive midfielder with positional discipline

2x creative attacking midfielders (left and right of the three).

In this window we also need to offload:

15 or so of our 40something first team squad

  10. Ruggygman – yes we coasted in NLs fourth year of being in charge. How do his first three compare?

  11. 29 is still too many for a first team squad, so upwards of 15.

Pay them off if no one wants them because a bloated first team squad breeds complacency and laziness

I’m far from happy with what’s been served up.

There’s a reason Lennon left and there’s a reason Celtic have a raw manager in place.

Lennon’s team was in the way down. Add to that, an off form Commons, who bailed the team our almost every game, and several wantaway players and you have what being served at Parkhead.

The blame does not lie fully at Deila’s door, neither is he blameless.

Sutton and Hartson see him as an easy target so let rip. They should aim their anger at those further up the foodchain.

We are being short changed again and their needs to be a better balance between financial prudence and success on the park than what Celtic currently have.

  15. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

    Chris,

I accept it was not sustainable and by the end of his tenure we were in debt. His lack of ability in the transfer market was never his forte. The dream team debt was cleared off during his tenure which did inhibit his spending increased his disenchantment and contributed to our current strategy.

I’ve decided to make a few changes to my life as we enter the New Year, smoking and drinking are now to be curtailed and the money saved will be passed on to a worthy cause.

I did some basic maths and rekon that at least £200 a month is spent on these habits. The wife says I have to give her her half of any savings so she can book a holiday. I’m happy with that and have set a target of staying off the drink for a month at a time and will just take it from there.

I’ve made a commitment to do some voluntary work at the weekends so it limits my free time as it’s when I’m bored and at home that I usually drink.

So if you meet me at CQN corner and I’m a bit crabbit you will know why.

Hopefully those behind the scenes at CP are working just as hard at shovelling out the dross as they are at bringing players in.

One will probably be as difficult as the other.

    ————————————————————————————————————————

No. If it was a comedy about the Irish Famine then the jokes would be about the impact of the famine on the Irish population whereas if it is set in Ireland at the time of the famine, it would not. Allo, Allo was set during World War Two as was Dad’s Army. The humour centred around the characters and the background was the second world war an tragic event where is is estimated between 50 and 80 million people died.

    Satires,

I have no sense of entitlement whatsoever.

Ronny is not a good manager in my opinion.

Loan deals are not so much of a problem. The likes of Berget can simply be sent back this month.

Don’t know how we will get rid of hopeless cases with contracts like Derk though, that’s the worry

  25. Well there certainly is a challenge this year.

It will be interesting to see how we react tomorrow.

We really need the points now.

I don’t see Aberdeen stalling this year as they are now starting to get players with experience back. Guys like Flood and Robson.

I don’t know how everybody else see’s it but I think the pressing system has failed simply because the whole team do not press together. Three or four press and the rest stand off. This means that when the ball is worked out of that area, as invariably it does, then we are short elsewhere.

We really need to be more solid in the middle of the park but most of all, as this article highlights, we have no cutting edge or someone to drive beyond the forwards dragging defenders back the way.

These things are mandatory in any ordinary team never mind a championship winning team. With Commons dropped, and since Joe Ledley was sold, we have played without both of these aspects now for a whole calendar year and yet we witness, certainly the top four teams in the league, do this time and again.

    I’m a great believer in two things in football;

    1. Watch the other teams in the league and see if you can glean anything from the way they play that you can use either in your team or against them.

    2. Don’t ask your players to do something that they cannot do.

We are NOT a pressing team at the moment as we simply do not have the personnel to do so. We may be in the future with personnel changes but right now we are not. Tactics must alter to reflect this.

We play with two wide men yet can anyone tell me when was the last time we scored with a header that wasn’t a corner?

Finally, it is often mentioned here that across the city a certain group of fans have ‘entitlement’ in their DNA. Well what is in ours is ‘complacency’. I witnessed it in the 80’s when, with a little investment, we could have won at least another three titles and possibly a Cup Winners Cup. We learn NOTHING from our own history to rectify the errors of the past.

We have a bloated squad and one of the latest rumours I’ve heard is that we are about to bring in a 20 year old from Ireland. What about our own 20 year olds or why was this guy not at our club already. We have a desperately poor record of bringing through players of genuine quality from our youth set up. THAT MUST CHANGE.

The team must step up to the plate in the next two months to bring us through what I expect to be a lot of tough fixtures but I do believe we can if certain deficiencies are rectified. Here’s to us.
